My mother in law in a very non girly lady. She lives on a farm, milks goats, reads books and that's about it. Not complaining, it is just who she is. She never has worn a dress or skirt in all the years I have known her. She isn't interested in crafts or shopping either....gosh she sounds kind of boring, doesn't she. She's not. I love my MIL!!!
We can't send her flowers, or candy or gifts, she either doesn't like them or doesn't want them.
So, I need to make a really spectacular card. I use primarly SU products but, if someone shows me a card design I can improvise.
Hi Cindy,
Sounds like you M-I-L would appreciate a card along the lines of nature. (Perhaps something similar to your "Green Deer Birthday?" There was a spectacular card on the gallery yesterday that was Kansas inspired - it had a brayered (or sponged) background with a windmill, and the focal item was sunflowers. That would be a wonderful Mother's Day card. Use a lot of texture in the card, and keep the embellishments on the rustic side (twine, jute, gingham, etc.) Your work is wonderful; I'm sure you'll come up with something great
Yup! That's a good idea too.....'tho I have done the farm scene before for her. I have done horses for her.....she loves them! Not a big flower or vegetable gardener.....'tho she does have a swimming pool and likes to float in the summer....thinking.....
I usually try to make a photo card for those tough-to-give-cards-to people in my life. My family just does not get the whole handmade card thing. The only cards they save are the ones with photos on them. I also keep them very simple with the photo and sentiment front and center. The other thing I make sure to do is hand-write a very specific sentiment/note on the inside...stating specifically what I love and appreciate about the person. My family is uncomfortable with "feelings" and I am the mushy one in the bunch. For many years I just picked a humorous card up at the store because that was the most accepted ritual in my family. That no longer works for me...so I find a photo that I know the person will love and write from the photo. They're happy...and I get to share how much I care.
what about a little jar/bottle of good hand cream? if she works with her hands, maybe thats a gift she'd like. Bath and Body works has one called "Look Ma, New hands" (how cute for moms day? LOL they sell it all year though). Its like $7 for a travellish-size bottle, the big one is $20 or so. But it smells very faintly, and absorbs without being greasy, and isn't really girly LOL.
Its in a blue and white bottle, so you could make a card to match, about how mothers do so much with their hands....
Okay you guys.....if I had a cow stamp that would be great as she and my FIL raise steers for beef for the whole family. But, alas sadly, I do not. Tons of other stamps.....mostly flower oriented and cutsie.....which she is not. But the garden ones go over well and anything watercolored. Last year I made her a flowerpot card which she loved.
I always write what she means to me, Wayne and our son.....and I always thank her for her love and support. She appreciates the handmade cards, knows what time, thought and energy I put into them.....not sure if she keeps them all because of that or because she doesn't want to throw them out. I don't think anyone in the family takes that much time to do something for her.
She also loves quilts....maybe a pieced card this year with sentiment.....love all your thoughts!!!

I appreciate that idea, but see, that is just too girly for her. And gave her Denise's lotion for Christmas. But thanks!

oh I think you may have hit the nail on the head - do you sew on your cards - maybe a pieced card sewn together or faux stitched.
Wow, very tough. What about UpseyDaisy? Flowery but not too much. And can be used for any color. And Daisies are always cheery, withough being mushy. The other set that comes to mind is the Branch out ( I think that is what it is called) . I like the tree. Or the tree from Thoughts and Prayers. I think these can also be done in ANY color, so as not be too girly.
Thanks jennik and Michelle.....trees are good and so is upsy daisy....don't have either of those. But thinking about the tree from Thoughts and Prayers. whimsy stamps is just too cutsie for me let alone my MIIL....thanks for the input.
Still thinking.....going to have machine or hand stitching on it 'tho that much I know.
I like this idea! I could even zig-zag stitch at the 'seams' of each piece. Heck, could use some really cool nature paper, tie a bow around the bottom, add a small sentiment and be done!
Not sure yet.....mojo is definately gone for the moment. Think it will be something with nature....simple and clean.
I might use an embossing folder that looks like daisies and color centers with yellow then use a nice sentiment for the front. Maybe add a butterfly for emblishment. Hubby and I will write our own personal notes inside instead of stamping something.

How about the farm set from SU? Do you have it, could you order it? Sounds like it would be perfect for her, I can't remember the name just yet but it looks really pretty colored!
I need to get it because my mom grew up on a farm and will be moving there when she retires and I'd like to have it to make things for her and her new house!!!!
And I didn't read all the posts but the goat idea made me laugh
she would get a big kick....so to speak...from the goat one. but, I have a budget and have already reached it this month. will have to order the stamp with the kids on it eventually and I will have to look for other goat stamps too.
I have some farm images that I might use to make some note cards for her, she seems to like that. I did an assortment of horse ones a few years back and she is savoring them.

What do you think?
I think it is GREAT!! Here is a link to Dawn O. blog, she shows you how to make your own embossing folders (just happens to be a daisy one) : http://dostamping.typepad.com/dostam...-big-shot.html
Daisies are a happy flower to me.

Yup! That's pretty sweet. But, I think I am going to use the embossing folder from the SU Christmas Mini...supposed to look more like a pointsettia but, I think it would be great as a daisy!
