Need grammar help
I'm going to computer generate a sentiment for inside my card and need some help with grammar (commas, etc.)
An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
But if the doctor is cute...
or is it
An apple a day keeps the doctor away,
but if the doctor is cute...
Thanks in advance

Not sure about which is correct, but the sentiment is really cute!

i think either is grammatically correct - so go with your preference. personally, i like the second better.
for an expert's opinion:

Either is grammatically correct. IMO, however, there seems to be a trend for starting more sentences with a conjunction, which bothers me. If it were me, I would use the second one.

MS word is entirely untrustworthy. Both are correct.

Both are correct, but as an English teacher, I prefer #2.

Grammatically, the second one is the only correct one. Technically, you shouldn't begin a sentence with a conjunction (but). I do, however, think you could use either one. Many greeting cards aren't grammatically perfect, and you can relax the rules with them.
(If you really want to be picky, you should put a semicolon before "but" and a comma after "cute.") ;)

You know, of course, all of us now want to see your finished card. ;)
Keep track of this thread and post a link after you upload it, okay?

actually as an English Lit Major I would go with Option number THREE:
An apple a day keeps the doctor away; ( I *heart* Semi colons )
but if the doctor is cute...
But by the rules of the road.. Number 2 is the proper form.

I was always taught that there should be a comma before and after the word "but". In my opinion it should be: An apple a day will keep the doctor away, but, if the doctor is cute...
My english teacher told me one way to tell where to put a commas is, when you say the sentence out loud, you would put commas where you have pauses when speaking.

It's called an ellipsis, and you're right. The ". . ." works really well for this sentiment.
