I went to use my scor tape yesterday, and it was gone; disintegrated, melted, whatever it does. It was a generic one, not the name brand. Does the name brand do that too? I guess I kept it too long, as I don't use it that often.
Wow, I have never had that happen to my tapes. How old was your roll of tape? I have had washi tape lose its stickiness, but not my adhesive tape. I use Stampin' Up's Tear N Tape.
I've had it probably at least three or four years; maybe more. It was so weird, all that was there was the paper that it clings to. I noticed the roll felt different when I picked it up; like it wasn't trying to hold together. It was a cheap tape that I bought online. I had a roll of the name brand stuff somewhere; just don't ask me what I did with it!
That's never happened with my ScorTape - even the cheaper knock-offs. However, something similar did happen with 2 rolls of foam tape that I bought at the dollar scrapbook supplies booth at Scrapbook Expo a few years ago. The tape just dried up, and there's no stickiness to the foam. It just crumbles and rubs right off the foam, and I have to add my own glue to it. I feel your frustration and disappointment.
I have Scor-Tape from maybe ten years ago (not used then for paper crafting) that's 100% fine. You can sign up for the company's email list. Sometimes they have discounts or bundled specials, and they don't email too often. Nice owners too.
I have had trouble with my stick glue and foam tape I kept in those stacker drawers. It is my my forced air vent and figured that affected it because of the warm air flow. I was just sick since I had about a dozen of the elmer stick glues dried right up to skinny little stick all shrunk and hard. Wasn't in that draw more than a year.
I found a couple of old cards I made a few years ago using Scor-tape in my stash. All the sticky had dried and sunk into the paper leaving a stain and also a paper-like strip with no sticky at all. I have switched to a liquid glue hoping the results will be a little better.

Until this thread I hadn't known some people used the name Scor-Tape generically, not just for the name brand. Are you saying you used the "real" (name-brand) Scor-Tape and it did that or another generic brand?
I'd never heard of the real deal doing that, and an instructor who uses it for portions of books in book binding even uses it - like to adhere paper to bookboard covers.
I have some presentation boards (non crafty) that are maybe ten years old and the tape has held well, so was curious.
I used 'the real thing' Score tape. I wasn't happy at all! Maybe it was old when I got it. (purchased it at a stamp show).
I wonder about storage issues, like prolonged and varying heat and/or cold, even multiple times over an extended period. To double check, I looked at my roughly ten-year-old presentation boards and the parts with Scor-Tape are fine. (A couple other parts are not!) The boards were shipped from the East to the West coast and back again, but other than that were in a rec room and now one is now in my craft room. Some little boxes made from DSP a few years ago are fine too. Being a go-to adhesive for more than one instructor over the years, I wonder if you just got super unlucky, which is the pits. : (
