I almost know how you feel. I had made 9 of 14 little 4th of July packages for my boss and Sam the Boy Dog ate every one of them. We immediately took a table spoon of hydrogen peroxide and squirted it down his throat. Up came the alum. foil, chocolate, paper etc.....I know what remained wasn't that much. Sam weights 12.5 pounds, so 1 tbl. really does the trick.....Again I am so sorry about your convention swap.
I had a toy poodle when I was growing up and after eating chocolate he would have a seizure. Not fun when you're home alone and he ended up falling down a flight of stairs!
A friend of mine raises Jack Russells- one of her's got into a chocolate pie at a family gathering and threw up EVERYWHERE and almost died from dehydration.
We had a very large black lab that we babysat for and she got into a package of oreos once when she was here. We're not sure how many she ate, but thank goodness she is as big as she is- it didn't seem to affect her that much. We gave her hydrogen peroxide so she threw up most of it then had diarrhea for a few days.
We raise puppies for Hearing & Service Dogs of MN and have had lots of puppies and young dogs in our house in the last 6 years that we've been helping them. PLEASE, for your dog's sake as well as your own sanity, CRATE TRAIN YOUR DOG! If you can't be with them, watching every move they make, put them in their crate! It's no different than putting a baby in a play pen. Once they get used to it, they appreciate having their own space. And then there is no way they can destroy or eat anything they aren't supposed to.

At any rate, it would have taken a good bit to hurt her).
That's basically what our vet told us, too. He said the whole chocolate thing is greatly exaggerated. They're more concerned about repeat exposure than a one time nosh...
Now, there ARE some dogs who cannot tolerate even a little chocolate, but it's more like an allergic reaction than an out and out "chocolate poisoning".
If it was a small amount, it probably won't do much.
OH, You poor thing! Do you have anything left to swap? Maybe we can send you some swaps to make up for the fact that you are swapless?
This year hasn't been a good one for me either. I have my convention ticket, plane ticket, and hotel room, but I needed an emergency hysterectomy last week and I am home recovering. Doctor says no convention for me! boo hooo.
OOoo, I just thought of something else! If you buy a new bag of nuggets and bring along some mailing labels you can make a quicker easier version of nugget swaps... and with a quick reliving of how your dog ate your swaps I bet there will be TONS of people who would lOVE to swap your 3D for anything they have!

Yeah...I'm not going to convention, but if I were....I'm pretty sure I would swap just about anything for chocolate. Wouldn't matter to me what form it came in! LOL
Dog update:
Nearly five hours later, I'm still mad at them and they know it! But no signs of illness. I used to work at a vet hospital so I knew it would take a much larger amount of chocolate to do anything to two 90 lb labs. Bad dogs, very bad dogs.
I hadn't taken any pictures yet of the finished work. I was going to do that tonight. And I don't have a sense of humor about the situation yet to take after pictures.
I'm thinking of holding a sign at Convention that reads My Dogs Ate My Swaps. So if I do, come say hi! ;)
Ohhhhh......LABS.....! That's all you had to say, lol! I'm so sorry that happened. I am so familiar with this kind of happening. One of our dogs ate a huge speaker once. No lie.....it was awful!
Totally off the original topic - has anyone actually ever heard of a dog getting sick from chocolate? I have always been told it's toxic, but I've never heard of a dog getting sick from it. Every dog we've ever had, at one time or another, has gotten into some chocolate. Little dogs, big dogs, whatever. One even had a good portion of a 1 lb. chocolate bunny (and then hid the remains under a couch cushion!). None of them have shown any ill effects from it. Not that I would feed my dog chocolate or anything (what a waste!)...
beecreative, I am so sorry for you. I don't know if I'd cry or be so stompin' mad, but I sure wouldn't be very happy. Maybe some nice ladies will hear of your plight and give you one of their swaps at convention?
I actually looked it up once when my dogs got ahold of chocolate, and they need quite a bit to get seriously bad effects off it.
I know all about naughty dogs this week, hubby ate later than the rest of us last night, got up from the table, and Zoie, the beagle, got his pork chop. Boy oh boy was she in trouble, she didn't even get to go for her nightly walk.
Lets see, our lab has gotten into a box of Sees candies, ate of platter of brownies and so on. He is just fine.
I don't know if its the particular dog but he has never had a problem and LOVES chocolate. We have to hide it from him! LOL
Loree
Sounds like my dog. He's eaten a lot of chocolate over the years and he's just fine. He knows what the word chocolate means. He also tried to eat the makings of a bunch of cards I had in a baggie. He thinks if it's on the table and in a baggie it must be something to eat. For some reason he didn't eat them. He loves paper.

Been thinking this the entire time I've read the responses. Thanks for putting this out there. Folks need to know that they, their pets and their households could be so much safer all with a little bit of training! (for everyone's benefit!)
To the OP. {{{HUGS!}}}

printout a picture (or 100) and ask if anyone will let you photograph their swaps...
you may get a lot of "Pity" ideas!
not to mention the sheer value of this as cautionary tale to other stampers who are pet owners
or parents...
my ds ransacked all my binders of swaps...
and a renovated vintage suitcase from my 3-d stuff and tins and minibooks
some samples in the album were 3-D and I had just folded them down flat and left one hershey kiss, or 3 m&ms to "show" that they were treat holders...
all opened 'joyously' let's just say...
also, on the note of convention swaps...
people just want to see you, and see you happy...
what about whippin' out a book and getting autographs and addy's...
an old fashioned idea...penpals...
or just enjoy the people from your sideline, SU!group, hotel, or 'class'.
you'll be far unluckier to let this wreck your convention.
besides, I find the thing I always short myself on is the great idea boards that SU! provides...
at regionals anyway...
I look at my photos later and say oooh... how did that one look...? and wish I had spent more time.
hope your pup is a-o-kay!

Agggghhhh! Less than 24 hours before I leave for Denver and my dogs ate two bags worth of Hershey nuggets that I already had decorated and they destroyed my nugget boxes I made for my swaps.
I cried for a half hour.
Becky
that happened to me last year! my very bad golden retriever ate about 30 nugget boxes last year....she didn't eat the chocolate when it was on my desk, or the boxes before they were finished......nooooooo.
She waited until they were DONE with RIBBON and candy. Then, ate them!!!!!!!!!
I feel for ya! I've been there.....

My dog does throw up after eating chocolate so I keep it far away from her. I did see on the local news about a dog that did die after eating chocolate. So I think it's possible. I think the big factor is how much they eat.
Diane
And the type they eat. I had a dog eat a bag of Hershey's miniatures paper and all and the vet basically said it probably wouldn't be a big deal b/c that's not a very rich type of chocolate.
Baker's chocolate is supposed to be more dangerous - but I doubt you would have been using that for a swap:mrgreen:
ooooohhhh nooooo!!!! BAD dog, bad, bad, bad! No biscuit for you! I am so sorry about your swaps and can only imagine how horrified you were to discover this terrible fate which befell your wonderful swaps! Hope you dog is ok and that you recover from the trauma as well! Maybe if you pin on a sign saying, "M dog ATE my swaps!" you will get a few swaps anyway???
what a beautiful elaborate swap!
I would swap you for a damaged one they are so nice!
again, the bad furry children" are okay right?
so now you can laugh!
I'm trying to attach last week's 'cal'-amity...
child related...(named callum)
let's see....
the white stuff is modpodge...
it doesn't show all the projects he coated as well...
they literally were 'coated' hangers that I was making for an altered item exchange...haha
my punny little guy!

A friend of mine has a mutt-dog...he is the cutest thing. Anyway, he ate a plate of brownies and began to have seizures. She rushed him to the vet and they pumped his stomach...the dog is fine but she says that since that incident, her dog has never been quite the same.

Someone was asking if anyone knew of an incident with dogs/chocolate.
My neighbors had a ****zu (sp?) who got into the kids' Easter baskets while they were at chuch; they were gone about 3 hours. The dog did die a day later. They got home too late from church and apparently it had already gotten too far into his little system. It was a very sad day in our neighborhood, so yes, it does happen.
We have dogs, and I am extremely attached to my stamping things. I was telling my husband about this sad situation with the chocolates and he made a comment that made me laugh. Thought it might make you laugh to.
"Oh that's terrible! I don't know who I feel more sorry for, the woman who made the swaps....or her husband!"
I am so sorry this has happened. I wish I could help you in some way. Just go and enjoy your time. I am sure you will have wonderful pictures of swaps when you get home. Enjoy and have a safe trip.
Hugs,
Debbie
Ha! I was just thinking the same thing! My boys want a puppy sooooo badly, and even though when I was growing up our dogs always stayed outside, I know we'll keep ours in the house. And I have had all these visions of horrible things happening to stuff in the house -- then I find THIS thread! Eeeek! We're definitely getting a crate!!
And to the OP -- I can only imagine what a horrifying discovery that must have been! Swapping is always my favorite part of convention -- every year that I go I seem to have nightmares a week or so before I leave that I go and forget to take my swaps with me, or I lose them along the way, and then I have nothing to trade for. I'm so glad you had a little time to make some more before you left!!

I just told your story to my 10-year-old, who has watched me work on convention swaps enough over the past three years to understand all the hard work involved, and when I was done telling the story, he asked what kind of dog it was. I told him it was a lab, and so he says.......

I am sorry about your swaps but I would definitely check with your vet or call the emergency vet clinic. I used to work for a vet and most dogs cannot digest chocolate. It speeds up their heart rate and can be deadly.
well sounds like at least you'll have a good story to tell. I have given many swaps away at events to people who didn't have anything to swap back-- there are lots of wonderful people who belong to SU
have a great time

This "dog ate my swaps" thing got me to thinking about one year long before I became a demo when my upline had worked so hard on her swaps and had them all ready to go on the dining room table waiting to be packed. They didn't have a dog so she was totally unprepared for going downstairs in the morning to discover that their hall BR toilet had overflowed during the night and the water ran down the ceiling and THRU the DR chandelier soaking and ruining all of her swap cards! I felt bad for her at the time but didn't totally comprehend the horror of it all until I became a demo...poor thing! Bet that was 10 years ago and I still remember it! Every time I put away swap cards they go into a sealed ziploc bag and are up on the table out of reach of my dogs (since I do have one who adores munching on paper products...tissue, paper towels, old envies she drags out of the recycling, etc.) and I would be absolutely sick if anything happened to mine.
So, for the OP....I know things are wrapping up there in Denver, did you get any swaps with your "dog ate my swaps" sign? Jan

I had a 14# dog eat almost 1# of chocolate in minutes. By the time we found out, she was very listless and lethargic (maybe an hour after she ate it). We rushed her to the vet and he kept her overnight. He's an awesome vet and not melodramatic in the least, but he stayed at the clinic overnight with her, and told us he could not guarantee she would make it through the night....if she did, she would be a-okay. Thankfully, she made it through.
I hope your dog's alright and mucho sympathy on losing your swaps! That really, really, sucks.
Anxious to hear... Did you wear a sign? Or a T-shirt? Did you get any swaps?
SO sorry for your hard work gone to the dawgs...
I can relate! I have a lab, and she's eaten her fair share of scrapbooks, wallets, cash, books, clothes pins, t-shirts, etc...
Nearly always when she was being taken care of by SOMEONE else.
Huge hugs! So sorry!! Hope you had a blast anyway!! Wish I could've gone! I usually LIVE in Denver, but I'm in Spain. I for sure would've signed up to be a demo so I could go! Oh well... I'll sign up when I get back from Spain, I think...

The convention bag that we were given had a clear plastic window on the side for a scrapbook page we completed on the Make & Take night. So instead of the scrapbook page, I put a sign *My dogs ate my swaps.*
Some people laughed because they thought it was a joke - sometimes I'd share my story. Others would get all excited and say *You're the one on Splitcoast!* I actually had one demo seek me out at the Make & Take night and give me a swap. I was floored.
I had a great time. I just hope next year I don't have this kind of drama right before!
