Can someone please tell me why you would want gigantic background size alphabet stamps (as seen in the new spring mini catalog)? I do not get *it* at all. Are they only for scrapbooking? Because if you used them on a card and put any type of layer on top of it, you wouldn't even be able to see the letter.
I just don't get the appeal...can someone enlighten me???
I'd like to know that too. The inital concept is appealing, but once I started weighing the pro's and con's of owning one large letter the con's took over quickly. Acutally, I didn't come up with any pro's. The only thing I can think of is for scrapbooking to monogram a page. To me they are kind of expensive and then you are stuck with that one letter and very little variety. I would love to hear another point of view...
I also forgot to mention in my first post that I didn't think SU did that great of a job demonstrating why you'd want those big, gigantic stamps either.
mmferg: why would you buy those letters you listed? I'm assuming they are your initials and/or your family's initials - but you didn't say what you'd do with them. I'm just curious/nosy/interested....
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head right now is to make something to hang on my kids' wall (?) But like someone else mentioned, wouldn't a stencil work just as well? I don't know, if they're geared toward scrapbooking, I wouldn't use a letter that size, I have enough trouble getting everything I want on a page. I think a letter like that would detract from my photos.

Good question! Yes those are the initials of all the people in my family plus our last name, but I needed to justify buying them so I wrote up a list of what other words I could use them with. I am a scrapbooker so I had scrapbook titles in my head The letterpress alphabet is the same font, so the two look great together!
If you look in the mags it is a current scrapbooking trend. I would need C, J & S, but I don't think I would use them enough to justify the $$. We should start local letter libraries where the price of admission is on the the 26 letters.
I totally think they are geared for Scrapbookers. THey are pricy if you buy a lot of them but you could frame each letter separatly and have you childs name on the wall like the name frame but larger scale

I won't be buying any of these stamps, that's the price of a background stamp and there are so many of those that I want. I can't imagine anyone would buy the entire alphabet. Not only are they going to take up a lot of storage space, but how often will they be used? I do agree though, I can't wait to see what the girls on SCS are going to come up with. Maybe someone will come along with a card to make me change my mind.
OH MY GOSH!!! You guys....Baronsmom just sent me a sneek peek of what she has done with these and OH MY WORD!!!! They are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!! You will have you check her gallery later this weekend....

Oh, just terrific! Seeing Jenn's scrapbook pages has been making me want some of those gigantic letters. Now I need them even more after seeing this list! And I need Letterpress alpha too! I need a second job because I don't know if I have much more to sell on ebay!
I was going to get the letter "J" just to make monogram cards for myself and I was going to mask the J with flowers etc. wrapped around it. However, I learned that the J will not fit on a standard A2 card, and I don't scrapbook. I think I'm going to pass on these -- I wouldn't stamp my walls with them, but it would make a cute border in a child's room to use A, B,C or the child's name or some other thing like a favorite sports team. However, If I were going to use them for walls, I think I'd buy foam ones, which are cheaper and I think would be better with acrylic paints. JMO.
For scrapbookers, they are adorable, but pricey.

I think these stamps are pretty cool. With what everyone is saying about the price, I won't be getting too many of these. Probably our initial, which I wish was a little more exciting. To me, "C" just isn't that exciting. Not like a "S" or "K" or "M". LOL
I think there are a number of distinct trends that come and go in stamping. This is just one of 'em. What have we had in recent years? Type keys, vintage and ephemera, 1960's color combinations, sputnik modern patterns, stamps that simulate fabric (canvas, cheesecloth...). We change our taste in stamps at about the same speed as clothing trends (they are very close) and perhaps even faster than home decoration, but they reflect our lifestyles and tastes.
Letter stamping, big letters is very popular, and it crosses over into the scrapbooking market well. And it will last until the next big thing comes along.
I don't plan on buying any...too expensive and even if you do scrapbook, as soon as you put something on the page, it will be covered up.
Not practical at all and I can't see why anyone would want them...As for stamping on walls, I would much rather use foam. Much cheaper and it works better with paints, in my experience.
As a scrapbooker, I'm excited about getting them. I have a child whose name starts with X, and I love that can get him one. I also love the idea of using it as decor (the actual stamp) when I' not using it!
I really want numbers, though. Picture the cute cards and scrapbook pages for birthdays and sports! Assuming the letters make it into the catty, would y'all want numbers too? (Keeping in mind that 10 numbers is $165.)

Very good point! Maybe I should start being more sensible about this again After all, 24 hours ago, I was NOT going to buy any!

Oooh! Now that would be cool! You could use a jersey number on the page! I'm being sucked in again... by an idea that hasn't been made into a stamp yet! Help!!!!
I really do think SU will have these gigantic letters in the new catty.
I ordered B, C, W
I cannot wait-I will be using them in my make and takes for March and April (and probably May)
Using the main letter embossed and then adding in bg details and a tag to the letter
For example:
B-polka dots in the background for Baby or done with a pretty floral bg stamp for "Best Wishes" (which could be for anything) or Birthday Wishes
C-Congratulations, or for scrapbooking "Cool Cam" (at the beach)
for a new bride doing a set of notecards monogrammed with just the last ltter of their names would be a great gift (luckily for me one of my bestest customers is getting married and her last name will start with a W! LOL)
W-Wow, Winter Wishes, Wedding, etc.
I think they are so elegant and will make FAST cards witha lot of oomph, not to mention scrapbooking possibilities. I cannot wait to get mine (next week!)

I think that a C is the most exciting letter of all!! You can tie ribbons to it, emboss it, pat it lovingly and put it EVERYWHERE...and it spells such great words...and names. ;)
I am really excited about them! I do not plan on getting them all, though. That's not how I would use them. Using them as the beginning of a name or object is how I envision using them. I ordered K for my son Kyle and am going to get S (spring, summer, smile, etc.) and a C for our last name (cute, color) and who knows what other ones! I love the idea of stamping on top of the letters---adding flowers or small background stamps.
First of all - it's not fair to list stuff that Jenn Balcer made with the gigantic alphabet stamps because she could stamp a card/page made with a straight line and we'd all love it! So that's not playing fair!
Thanks for all the interesting use ideas - I'm not buying any, but at least I don't think they're as silly of a purchase as I previously did. And we can't all like everything, I guess.
I went to the online catalog. Can't seem to find the Gigantic Letters you are all discussing. What are the actual dimensions? What catalog are they in.
These letters are in the new Spring mini catalog (available March thru May) - you can go to the gallery to see examples. I think the letters are the size of a background stamp.
(my demo showed me a catalog early)
My friend had the idea to use the background stamp that has the definition of love--can't remember the exact name--in a light color, and the ginormous L in a darker color--it'd be a cute valentine. I don't know. Probably gonna pass on those.

Hear Hear!!! I'm in the "I don't get it crowd." I don't scrapbook either and I just can't see using it on a card. Headline Alpha is big enough for me, and it works with Label Classics. Cute pages Jenn, even if I don't get it. ;)

Hmmmm, I am not sure why you think they would be covered up. Yes they are "background" stamps, but I don't think they are intended to be in the background. Most people are using them for Titles, monograms, etc... There are several examples in the gallery that show ways to use them. Emily listed a few above and here are a few more that show ways to use them on 6x6 and 8x8 pages.
I know some feel they are too trendy, but to me alphabets are one of the least trendy things in scrapbooking...you will always need a title on your page.
Now that I think about it...it would be cute to stamp the letters A, B, & C in the background for either a kindergarten page or a toddlers page. Especially if you did it in primary colors or stamped white ink on black paper...then you would have a cute chalkboard background paper! Thanks for giving me another idea ;)

You know they are cute but I just can not swing that much for a letter that I will only use so many times....
NOW if I had an unlimited income I would probably get a few of them
