When you submit a card for possible publication, do you send any info about its construction or pointing out any particular features?
Depends a bit where you are sending it Fiona. Some places want instructions when you submit, others will only ask for them if they pick up your project for publication - best to check the guidelines for the place you plan to submit. I think pretty much everywhere wants a supplies list when you submit though (and make sure you're using current supplies, too).
I have had my work published in "The craft stamper" and this months issue of " Making gifts" magazine. Good luck with getting your work published xx jo xx
I've been lucky enough to be published several times (Somerset Studio, Somerset Studio Gallery, Vamp Stamp News, Stampers Sampler and Altered Arts Magazine (twice)
and the best advice has already been given and it's try to match the style of what you are submitting to the right publication, you could have a wonderful card but if it's cutesy and they only seem to publish artsy stuff you probably won't get picked. My other advice is, GO FOR IT! What do you have to lose?
Go for it! You never know- my first card I ever submitted got published by CARDS in AUgust of 08, but nothing since. Of course, I haven't submitted a whole lot. It takes patience, but is rewarding! Good luck!
I got Published!!!!!! I got a issue of Scrap & Stamp Arts today in the mail. Its the March issue.
They published a card in the Section for simple and quick cards from Readers.
I am so happy!!!!
So for the people out there KEEP TRYING!
Big Congrats to you !!!!!! Are you a subscriber to Scrap and Stamp? They published a couple of my cards but I had to buy the issue off the stand. I never would have known they published me if a friend hadn't told me. However Just Cards has always sent me a free issue.
The biggest excitement I had was being published by Paper Crafts this past year, especially since I've been a long time subscriber. For those hoping to be published just keep submitting! There's been alot of good advice on this thread.
Some really great advice in this thread, one thing I would like to add is that if you are trying to promote yourself, your blog or company etc by getting published, include with your pictures and instructions a text file with a short bio about yourself along with your website or blog address and ask for this to be included in the article.
I also agree that your photographs are very important, I have just had a 3 page publication in a UK Magazine called Popular crafts and one of my photos along with my name hit the front cover, it is an amazing feeling and I could not stop smiling for a good hour after seeing it! I'm sure though if the photo would have been of poor quality that would never of happened.
Every year I say I'm going to submit, but I don't. This is the year. My cards have lots of layers and technique, which I've noticed, is not what magazines generally go for. They seem to want cards that can be easily reproduced (CASED) by their readers - helps promote the products from their advertisers I think. (That's my theory anyway.) So, do I need to tone it down to get published?
I also use a lot of Copics, which, about six months ago was not in the magazines. Now I see it more, so that's encouraging for me.
Here's a great article I bookmarked for when I'm ready to take the plunge.
