HObby stuff comes to mind. If he golfs - some balls, tees, small golfing towel; if he fishes - some hooks, lures (whatever - I don't fish so I don't know). How about gift card to his favorite coffee place. If he likes music, Itunes gift card. Gift card for Borders or Barnes & Noble. I'm just thinking about the kinds of things I got when I retired in January (and no, I didn't get fishing stuff).

-Make some nice golfing score card kits if he is a golfer.
-I made a birdwatching log for my FIL when he retired as he likes to identify birds and then he writes them down when he saw them and the type of bird it was..
- At our family cabin on DH's side, whoever catches fish from the dock has to record it in the fish log. this was started back in 1959 and every year has been recorded. I did creat a really nice fishing log. We also have one for the fish caught in the boats. It is really neat to look back in these logs.
-Travel log book if he is planning on traveling anywhere.
-I gave Dh's uncle grilling recipe cards kit as he loves to grill and that was the retirement gift from our family to him!
I would figure out what his hobby's are and go from there. I found that the possibilities are endless then! have fun!
