For those of you who mail cards with lots of embellishments (actually even a few layers and a grosgrain knot will do it) or a clear envy....this is important!
Not only are postage stamps going up to 39 cents, but the 12 cent handling fee for hand cancelling items is going up to 13 cents! I called the other day and asked and was told no. Then while at the Post Office today, the guy mentioned that it would be. Just wanted to share!! So add a 10 cent stamp anda 3 cent stamp to those thick cards!
i'm a moron - i thought postage went up 1/1/2006 so have been sending all my cards with extra postage this past week. oops...I guess that's my donation to the USPS for 2006

You're not alone. I too have been making donations to the postal system this week. I feel so philanthropic!

You guys are going to think I am crazy, but I NEVER put extra postage on any cards that have knotted grosgrain ribbon or that are sent in clear envelopes. Guess What? They ALWAYS get to their destination! I hope I am not the reason for the postage rate increase! OOPS!

Boy, the USPS just loves you and Jennifer ;)
and just an fyi thingy...you can thank your lawmakers for the postage increase...the USPS must put some insane amount of money into escrow, despite finishing 2005 in the black. Had the vote not passed it would have been 2009 before there was another increase. Bums!
When I lived in California I never had to pay the extra postage, but once I moved to Louisville, Ky. I did. Maybe it was the small town in which I lived in California.

Me too! I normally have to pay extra when i go to the post office and they SEE them, but otherwise I have been lucky enuff to get away with regular postage... I think they should decide one way or another if they are going to enforce it everywhere or not, because in all honesty it is not fair that some have to pay extra, and some do not.

Thanks for the heads up, Emily. Now I wish the USPS would issue a couple of cute stamp designs with a value of 52 cents. I always hate to have my cute decorated envelopes plastered with several stamps that don't even coordinate with each other. Sheesh!

Huh- I never knew about the hand canceling thing either!!
I just send several Rak's our with regular postage & eyelets, ribbons, all kinds of stuff! Also my Christmas cards(130+) all had ribbons& such... Only one came back(someone forgot to put the apt # on there!!)
I've never paid an additional fee when asking the postal clerks to hand cancel my cards. They just take their big ol' postmark stamp and ka-chunka it on there! But I did pay a little extra to mail some square cards I made a while ago. My understanding on them is that because they are square, the automated machines can't determine which is the top and which is the bottom of the envelope, so they have to receive additional handling.
How do you know whether they need to hand cancel it??? I have always sent my cards with regular postage and have never had one returned to me. I only thought it was if you used a clear envelope? Is there a certain weight? I thought it was one ounce.
Thanks for your help!
Blessings,
Jennifer
I have mailed many cards in the clear envelopes and Just thrown them in the mailbox, But I have alway added more postage to the envelope. ( was doing- .37 + .23 stamp)
Now doing .39 + .23 stamp, Just in case.
I have had some cards left in my mailbox with a note from the carrier stating that I should place the money in the box the next day for the extra postage.
I told them I didn't send it and I'm not paying for it.
So far I haven't had anyone come after me for not paying for others.
Now what really stinks is all the .37 stamps that "WE" can not buy after Saturday. Jan 7th, 2006------Did you know that they will be trashing all of these?
I know, sometimes I have ahd stuff go fine and sometimes I have it not. Also, why the heck don't they have a stamp for that amount?? Or at the very least one for 13 cents for the hand cancelling fee? I hate having 3-4 stamps on an envelope, looks stupid!
