Doris, over the years when working, I dug into a lot of flies - vertical and horizontal. Horizontal were more difficult - for me - no matter how well made. For one job when moving into an office with horizontal files, I whined enough that the file powers that be finally changed them to vertical.
Here's why I found them difficult and would rather go up than sideways. But YMMV*
Facing a vertical drawer, I can see and reach every file and the files are directly in front of me.
With horizontal files, I usually had to face the long side of the drawer - which meant I was at a right angle to the files, so awkwardly reaching over to pull them, or if the space allowed, I could face the drawer but could only reach so far. The drawers themselves were also heavier.
I think it's extremely common not to imagine how we will access items when organizing. IOW making pretend the job is done and we're reaching for the ________ or pulling out the ______ from the _____.
I get use to things and I like to try to keep them the same way. LOL I was able to find a paper tower from Overstock.com, just a few weeks ago. My husband set it up for me and I love it! Here is a picture of it.
Bjeans thanks so much for your input, I had never considered of the way of accessing a lateral (horizontal) cabinet as opposed to vertical. With SU! Cardstock or any good quality CS, weight will be a factor.
Lamborghini Gal, actually that nickname is something Splitcoaststampers automatically attaches to you, when your posts reach a certain count, I cringe when I think of using glitter, lol!
Doris B, that is so funny! I had no idea about the name thing. Hahaha! I see I'm a "Matboard Maniac" whatever that is! LOL I love glitter. But, I find that no matter how cautious I am, it still gets on the floor, on my clothes........I've even found it at the opposite end of the house. :-)

Yes it is a consideration. That's why mine is right next to where I stamp. When I pull out my file, I'm already standing to the side of it. I arrange the folders horizontally from the front, so when I'm at the side everything is front to back, just like it should be. In my new craft room (which is actually a bit larger than my old one) My "color" cabinet (which is where all ink pads, markers, reinkers, paints, embossing powders, etc. are), buts up against the wall on the right side. The left end of my stamp cabinet backs up to that same wall and is barely 20" away, allowing me to just be able to open the last row of drawers of my color cabinet (where all the markers, pens, chalks, pencils, etc. are), making the access to those drawers to the side. I'm often frustrated with that. it is what it is but something to think about, when deciding on new storage.
Hi Doris, you are so welcome! I have a small card room. In looking at the pictures, it seems bigger, but it's pretty small. I have everything right where I know it is, even though it seems a little cluttered. I hope others will share their pictures. I'd love to see some too. :-)
I need to read through this thread. I have outgrown my file cabinets, I have a 2 drawer and a rolling cart. Actually debating on a 3 drawer lateral cabinet, definitely want fully extending one, have to find a decent priced one that is sturdy, If you know of any good brands let me know! I really do like having my card stock in file folders, one for each colour and just keep the scraps to the front of folder, a tab with name of colour and sample cardstock tab works great. I am so used to it that way after 15 years, makes me hesitate to switch how I house them, I know a shelf with magazine rack holders would be more compact, Anyhow need to read through this thread!
I use hanging file folders in portable handled file totes. Then I use a side loading page protector for scraps and put that in front of the full sheets. That way when you pull the file, the scraps don’t go flying.
I bought the containers from the container store they have been working out great for storing my 12x12 and 8.5x11 paper and they fit perfectly in my Kallax cubes.

I have two filing cabinets from Ikea that I store all my cardstock in. I wanted to keep the c.s. from fading on the edges, which it did when I had them out in the open.

I used to keep my cardstock in open shelves, where I could admire it. Then I realized that the edges were fading...and that will just not do. I solved that by putting my cardstock in the craftroom closet , which has sliding doors. My card stock is stored vertically, in stacked wire cubes. I put a piece of cardboard, cut to size. on the bottom of the cubes so the paper doesn't catch when I pull it out. AFter trying a lot of different methods, I settled on this one as what works for me. I can see all the colors. I can pull out just one sheet without having to lift up any of the others...and it doesn't fade anymore.
Wow, I agree. Samantha, your craft room is so clean and neat...and beautifully organized. My storage is a hodge podge of shelving that was repurposed, along with standing rolling drawers. I share my room with a twin guest bed, so can't spread out as much as I wish...sigh.
