For those of us who use dp it will be difficult. But if you don't use dp that is a good idea. Dp is the reason why I buy so many different colours and brands of cardstocks. I am trying to reduce my dp but it will take years before I can reduce it substantially. Seriously I overspent on dp.
What is DP? The only DP I have heard of (from military men) is DEFINITELY not appropriate for a craft forum!! LOL
OK, sorry to mention that, but really I don't know what DP is in regards to stamping and paper. What can I say, I am pretty new at this.
Joan:
How is it going now that you joined a|s? Have you changed your colors or are you keeping with the 15?
Myself I think it would be hard but I could get by with 12-15 colors PER FAMILY, LOL! So I could do 12-15 reds, 12-15 teals, 12-15 purples...difficult but doable if I absolutely had to ha ha!

Funny you should ask. After much internal debate and many lists, I finally settled on my A Muse color list and ordered my papers and ink yesterday.
Here's what I chose, based on holidays, my love of using flower images, and my love of the color --
and then of course white, off white, black, and kraft.
so 21 colors.
The starter kit included other colors as well, but I decided not to get the paper that went with all those inks. Would love to own them all, but I think sticking to a smaller color palette works for me.
At least for now!

I also collect the Ranger Distress inks and use those to make my own colored paper. And I have all the memento inks, so I have plenty of color options without buying every shade of paper.

Oh no limit my cardstock...Nevah! I like to have choices but sometimes I wonder why I bought some of it. I have some retired SU cs that has never been opened because it was so stinking ugly! Like Cameo Coral...yuck. Now don't get me wrong I love SU cs. I have almost every color and 6-8 pkgs of some of the retired colors that I loved like Soft Sky and Purely Pomegranate. To me these colors are gorgamous. And what???? No purples. I am a purple lover. You make beautiful creations so whatever you do will be right for you.

I also loved Soft Sky and still have some of that plus the coordinating color (can't remember what it is called). I too was disappointed when they took away all the shades of purple. Purple is one of my two favorite colors. Of course I had to buy Concord this year! LOL It was the only In Color that I bought!
As part of an effort to simplify the craft stuff, I'm thinking of gradually reducing my color cardstock to 12- 15 colors only. Has anyone successfully limited your stock this way?
then I would buy less of everything else that goes with it. I've come up with the following list.
3 blues
2 greens
2 reds
2 pinks
white
cream
black
kraft
1 yellow
1 orange
i have enough cardstock to last me a while, but i have run out of a few colors and that got me thinking....
What, no purple?
I could not live without purple and turquoise
When I quit being a SU demo years ago, I just let things run out. I am more of a CAS stamper anyway, so I haven't missed the colors as they run out one bit. Your plan sounds like a good one to me! I am a green kind of girl, so I have more greens than any other color. I also make sure I have lots of neutrals on hand such as kraft, cream, and white. A lot of the new 6x6 paper pads have solid colors inscluded, so I find that is helpful if I need a particular color, too!
Nope, couldn't do it. Just 2 greens and 2 pinks? No way, those are my favorite colors! I like having choices since I use colored cs as bases. I use SU and PTI the most, since I don't have a local source for smooth Bazzil. I can always find a color to work with various brands of patterened paper.

This is me too. No need to get rid of colors. I just let some run out, and I re-order my favorites that I run out of: white, cream, kraft, red, aqua mist, etc.
I think I responded to this thread before and said that I couldn't do without all the colors including the "In Colors" but since then I have changed my mind due mostly to the reformulating of the SU colors---what's up with that?! Apparently the new stuff is different and can't be mixed. So if I run out of my reindeer in the old formulation, I can't use the new ones in my old pad so that must be replaced! Again, who's up with that. Now I refuse to buy the new In Colors whereas before I would buy paper, ink, marker and pad. Ii will make do with why I have when I can no longer rein my pads---out they go and they will not be replaced. SU has lost lots of sales and whether I like it or not, I will be doing with less. Now that I've ranted, will someone tell me I'm wrong?
Just read all the way through this thread. I wonder how it is going for everyone. TBH I could easily just work with neutrals and school colors.
I don't tend to rely on cardstock for my color choices it just isn't my process. I have loads of inks and copics so I have plenty of color to play with.
Didn't read all the responses, so this might be a repeat, but what if you packed up all but those decided colors and worked with just them for a month or two. If you never got the hives while resisting those other colors, then just sell them in the box as is and never look back.

Oh my gosh, I laughed out loud and woke the dog! Cameo Coral is my favorite Stampin' Up! color, my master bedroom paint was color matched to Cameo Coral. Unfortunately, when it retired I was completely out of touch caring for my dad and I missed the opportunity to stock up. I am down to my last few full sheets and can't bear the thought of not having it anymore. time to start stalking eBay!

Jeanne...You're only part right. There are 5 colors that required reformulation of the inks. Otherwise you can use your reinkers you have. Here's the quote from SU.
Q: Do old Classic Stampin' Ink Refills work with the new firm foam pads?
A: Yes, with the exception of Basic Black, Basic Gray, Marina Mist, Perfect Plum, and Tempting Turquoise, which have been reformulated to work with the new foam pad material. We do not recommend using old ink refills in these colors with the new firm foam pads.

Thanks for the info. Any reason these 5 random colors had to be changed? Seems strange to me---but what do I know?!
I have some Cameo Coral I can send you! Please PM me.
I have decided to do this, sort of - LOL!
I based my colours on SU, and am down to 30 colours, including some retired SU colours which I will find in other brands. This includes my neutrals, and some colours that I am on the fence about. I do have about 6 pinks right now (my daughter is a bit of fanatic!) and will get rid of some of these as I figure out what works.
I went through all of my 8.5x11 and will tackle the 12x12 next ... but it is very liberating! Thanks Joan for suggesting this and I hope it has worked out for you!

All I can figure is that some component in those colors didn't work with the material in the pad. Common to those 5 colors is some tint of blue. Maybe that one particular tint was incompatible with the foam. Don't really know for sure.

Wow, you are a wealth of information! Thanks. Too bad, as those are some of my favorite colors and when my reinkers run out I guess I won't be using them. I really don't want to use a foam pad for dye inks. I like the fabric pad as the color doesn't get into places it shouldn't as it does with foam. Wish they wouldn't "fix" what's not broken as it seem to make the situation worse.
