*gasp* Your cardstock?? No no no no no no...
( did you do the vapor treatment yet? were they successful??)
Ok you can get by with those limits on your ink pads... truthfully I use out of hundreds of pads 3 of them most the time, but having alot of cardstock choices to back up how i felt like coloring something is what saves me...
I think it depends on you though, I am not overwhelmed by color choices of paper i like to fan through all the reds and go this one is the one that works...
I only buy what I use, but the only way I know what I'll use is to buy it. Great reasoning, eh? Actually, I love having a wide variety (sometimes Pirouette Pink works FAR better than Pretty in Pink) but don't buy packages of paper unless I've used up the ones I got in the original variety package. Interesting idea, though.
For the record, I'm pro-purple, too.

Joan and BarbaraJay - I am inspired! Not to get rid of anything (that would be too much!) but to pare down to the colors that I actually do USE - in my stamping space. I can always store the other colors. If I want them that bad - I'll have to work to get them. But after awhile - it just might work! I like to combinations.. and truly do find that I stick with my favorites all the time anyway.
ok, this thread has convinced me to do it. we are nuts and if i am going to be nuts, I might as well save space and cash. i'm just going to keep using up what i have until I'm down to a reasonable number of colors.
'course by then I will have forgotten this idea and have 7 shades of purple!!

urk...I just bought my first batch of PTI cardstock to round out my SU and Bazzil stocks...so I've added 7 colours (2 are greens!) to my already large selection...and don't even get me started on patterned paper...I buy just about every 6X6 pad plus the 12X12 collections that catch my eye...I am trying to use up all my old "In Color" cardstock so that will eliminate about 12 colours once I'm done. Sigh!
I did sell all my Papertrey card stock, ribbons, ink, etc. ( I just had all SU and all PT color )
It just got too overwhelming and I found it's easier to stay with one company. I'm not real crazy about clear stamps, so I figure I'll be good with SU ink/card stock no matter which rubber I use.
It is a liberating feelings to only have colors that I truly love and use . They all fit in hanging folders in a portable 9" deep plastic file box . I never have the need to " use up" anything. My patterned paper, ribbon and ink matches my solid color cardstock.
If I want to use a color I don't have I just buy a couple of sheets of that color CS at HL. I did this with Flame orange for a Harley Davidson card I made for my Son-in-law.
Another way I save money is I don't go to the paper or ribbon sales. I save money by just buying what I need even if it is at regular price. It is no saving to go to the 3 for $1 paper sales and buy $5-$10 in paper just to have it "in case you want it". I would rather pay 59 or $1.18 for one or two sheets and use it .
I don't waste gas because I only go to Michael's or Hobby Lobby when I am doing other shopping which is once a week. I start cards in plenty of time so if I have to wait a few days to get something I need it is no problem.
Good thought. Kind of a pipe dream for me too. I am in the process of using up the cardstock I have (may take a while). Haven't purchased anything but white in over 1 1/2 years and still have a lot. Speaks to overbuying in the past. Making cards ad scrapbooking as fasr as I can. When I get down to a manageable amount I'll probably stay at about 20-24 colors. But 15 is intriguing, but probably a little too challenging for me
Good Luck.
You're a stronger woman than myself. I have all but about 3 colors of SU, most of the CTMH ink and some of their paper. I like to have a lot of color choices. Since SU gave up the purples I am going to put in an order with PTI soon. I actually want some other inks and papers besides purples of theirs. Some of their colors are yummy! So good luck and if you are in a pinch and you need paper of another color you let me know! LOL.
Here is my thought process in choosing colors if it helps
I used the ROY G BIV system
Red= 3 Real Red-Razzelberry-Cranberry Cobbler
Pink (subset of red) =1
Orange=0 will buy individually as needed
Yellow=0 will buy individually as needed
Green=3 Old Olive- Pear Pizzazz-Hunter green
Blue=2 Bashful blue- Bermuda Bay ( well I fit it into blue lol)
Indigo=1 actually Navy
Violet=2 Lovely Lilac- Orchid Opulence
Plus Black-Chocolate Chip-White and I still need a grey
That is 15 colors without the grey
When I first started this insane hobby with Stampin' Up, I had to have ALL the colors. So I got them. Then I found Gina K and Papertrey. Then, I had to have ALL their colors. So, I got them. Oh, I was obsessed!
Fast forward to today...
I realized that I pretty much use white, cream, rustic white, rustic cream, kraft and other light colors for my card bases. I actually saw dust (gasp) on the dark greens, blues, browns, reds, yellows...well, you get the idea. So, I kept 6 sheets of most of the colours, kept all of my favorite colors and sold the rest. I don't regret it for a minute.
Now, my huge stash of DP is starting to get nervous...
ok, this thread has convinced me to do it. we are nuts and if i am going to be nuts, I might as well save space and cash. i'm just going to keep using up what i have until I'm down to a reasonable number of colors.
You go girl!! I was quite surprised by the responses. I think it could EASILY be done especially if you don't use much patterned paper. And using it and not replacing them is a better transition than 'getting rid' of them. I commend you for attempting to simplify. Just wanted to give you my support and my two cents.

I don't think I could do this, or even want to try.... I use both SU! and PTI CS, and I have a storage rack for each. Some of the colors are so close, but even the subtle difference can be a big difference when matching DP. I have all my embellishments stored with the CS, so after I make my paper choice all the other coordinating goodies are close by. This system works well for me.

Joan - let us know what colors/manufacturers you are thinking about.
Boy - getting that Scrapbox for Christmas has really turned you into a new woman :-)
I deliberately limit my cs colors. Too many choices just confuses me....that's the main reason I stick with SU. I only buy DP from SU too, so the matching thing that would normally make me insane is greatly simplified.
I don't count neutrals--black/white/vanilla/river rock/kraft/chocolate chip/gray...but I limit myself to...
bashful blue
not quite navy
real red
pretty in pink
elegant eggplant (Must. Have. Purple.)
certainly celery
old olive
wild wasabi
so saffron
Fabric,on the other hand, is QUITE a different story....

With all this said I am jumping in on the Pear Pizzazz bandwagon....love, love, love that color! I've always used lots of c. celery. PP just seems like a happier version of CC!
May do Daffodil Delight too.
One thing I wish SU would offer is single color packs of textured paper. I don't want a variety pack of textured colors as I won't use them. I adore textured paper.

I have a lot of SU and PTI cardstock to use up. However, as I do so I'm thinking of switching to the Hero Arts cardstock. It is thinner and has white on the other side.
An informal poll of my non stamping friends and relatives indicate that they preferred it by a 100% to 0% margin! They didn't care about the "thickness" -- they loved the inside of the card being white.
Hero Arts also has coordinating inks, markers, etc.
However, before jumping on a bandwagon, I'm just getting the sampler of Hero Art cardstock (not full sheets, just a sample) to see it and see the colors and figure out what inks I already have that match. Then I may substitute some of that cardstock for some of my current as I use it up.
I think sticking to a limited number of colors **may** work for me. then again, maybe not. I won't make my previous mistake of buying a bunch of it. I think I'll try one color first and see if I like it. I'm pretty sure it is made by Memory Box and I've used their papers before.
Just experimenting...

I use mostly SU products and I need to downsize. I'm always buying DSP and now have old paper I'm trying to use up. Luckily for me there's a fundraiser around the corner that needs a basket of cards.
Joan, I'm going to write down the colors I use most often and see if I can come up with a plan like you did. I'm also going to write down the colors of the accessories I have and see if that will help me decide what colors to stick with. Your gallery is awesome and I think you'll be able to pull this off with no problems!! Keep us posted
I love PTI cardstock because of its weight (and colors); and although I have a stash of 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 Stampin' Up cardstock, I rarely use it.
That said, the Hero Arts cardstock you mention intrigues me, Joan. I need the heavier weight for a lot of my cards, but I would find lighter weight with a white interior quite inspiring for clean & simple cards.
Papertrey has 29 colors now and some I don't use often, so once depleted will not replace. . . or they will come out with a new one I like more :^) .
I find with all of my supplies, I'm saved from myself by storage capacity. I recently purchased three file boxes from Wal-Mart that look nice (cannot find a photo online!), fit perfectly where I need them to, and store all of my cardstock. One for cool colors, one warm, and one neutrals. Unless there is space in them, no more cardstock!
When I read some SCS threads, I get the distinct impression that a lot of people sometimes wish they didn't have as much stuff as they do. And I bet not many consider limiting cardstock as one of their strategies for dealing with this. Food for thought, Joan!
Patterned paper is a tricky one. . . I just got BG's Curio and LOVE it so much. But I also purged recently and sent some paper I haven't used in awhile to a couple of friends. Again, saved by my storage capacity or lack thereof!! No more patterned paper for awhile for me.
Now I'm checking out the Hero Arts cardstock (because I have one empty drawer, LOL!!)
OK...this is totally going to freak everyone out. At one point years ago, I had every SU cardstock color. Lats year at this time I had purged and was only using white, kraft, black and cream. I have more cardstock now but those are still my go to staples that I use 95% of the time.
Julia! thanks. I hadn't even noticed this on your blog! Your work is so LUSH that the absence of colored cardstock escaped me. Awesome.
I ordered the Hero Arts sample from Ellen Hutson and should have it soon! But before I buy any more paper I must work my way through quite a bit of my current stash.

I'm no help, I'm sorry. I couldn't do it!! I LOVE all of my colors, and perish the thought of reducing them. I have cut down on other supplies, but I just couldn't imagine doing with fewer colors.
I think you have lost your ever loving mind. As much as I would like to downsize - that would be the last place I'd ever go. Someone referenced 64 to 24 box of crayons - I'm stepping it up from 96 box to 12 box of crayons, LOL. Don't think it'll ever happen here but good luck.
who knew the lack of purple would spark such outrage?
lol
Ha Ha : ) I wouldn't want to attempt what you're mulling over because I get so much of my inspiration from color and love lots of choices, but I DO think I could live without any purples - although SU's Concord Crush does speak to me, especially paired with greens like Pear. Of course, Concord Crush is really a bluish-purple, so yeah, I could live without the purples!

I think that the huge amount of choices there are is exactly what overwhelms me and stunts my creativity sometimes. I think if you stuck with a brand (such as SU or PTI, etc.) it could really work in your favor because you would invest in only 12-15 solids (paper and inks) and a few dsp's that coordinate with your solids (if you don't use a lot in the first place this might be easy). Good luck! You've really given me some "food for thought"!
As I mentioned before in this thread, I am already doing this. And just last night I was looking at my new (very small) stash of cardstock and thinking the 2 pinks I have, looked really lonely. The 3 blues were especially blue, wishing there was more of them. My plan was to get only 2 or 3 of each color (including purple), but it broke my heart to think of all the colors being so lonely without the rest of their family. I mean I HAVE to have dark sage green, lite sage green, grass green, Christmas green, kiwi/limey green, forest green, etc. Right, it would be a crime to only have 2 greens. lol
I could never do this without a written court order ;)
After last year's SU Color Renovation, I debated what to do..I am a demo, but do very little business. I decided to keep my retired stash for myself. So glad I did. I used a lot for Christmas cards, and I make things for the ministry where I work. Having LOTS of retired stuff is good for bulk thank you cards!
I love matching my dp colors.,...but that isn't a huge issue for me. Contrasting colors are fun, plus I make my own dp many times, so I can match it to anything
But I have always been obsessed with color...card stock, ink ribbon...LOVE colors! I always look at the Color Challenge, and I am starting to get hooked on color challenges from blogs
I s'pose I could have neutral card stock, and add color with ink and embellishments as someone else has mentioned...sounds nice, sounds interesting, sounds stunning actually
But nope...not for me. Keepin' ALL of my colored card stock!!!

Now you've done it, I didn't have any concord crush and simply would love to hold a piece of it in my hands now after that description, as well as the pear . . . this must be the same theory that operates as with weight loss . . . someone somewhere on the planet loses weight and it simply flies to another woman's hips . . . Joan is reducing her cardstock stash and mine wants to increase.
I'm with the "couldn't do it" group. I still long for the lavendars and greens back for SU! There are a few colors I could do without that I rarely use. IMHO more is better, LOL!
