love reading all the motivations stories, keeps us pumped up, so far havent bought anything this year haha.
went to joanns on monday and came out with nothing, that felt good ;)
I wonder if the "buying aspect" of stamping is like the Beanie Baby Craze. For most people it was the "thrill of the hunt" to find elusive Beanies LOL
As soon as they got one they had been searching for they were back hunting to finding another one.
These Beanie collectors had elaborate storage & inventory systems too Heaven forbid a tag should have a smudge or develop a miniscule crease !
Yeah I agree with the comments about shopping more than the craft. I vowed that I didn't need anything but when my husband and I went into Joanne's this last weekend. I had $8 sitting in my pocket and I bought more paper for cardmaking. Shades that I thought I didn't have and I liked. I've been buying more browns, tans etc lately and wanted something brighter. I knew I didn't have much blue so I got a couple of packs of the multi color on sale 2.49.
Well I should have known better not only did I break my vow, one of the packs I got the colors came no where near matching what was on the front.
My husband and I have been saving since we've been married (20+ yrs) to retire early and so we set $10 as our weekly allowance or mad money. Something that we can spend and not account for it.
My husband counts down to the penny. When I have a stampin up order or a cricut cart that I want. I give up my mad money to make up for the cost of the item.
So when I found I had $8 I couldn't resist.
When I started 11 yrs ago I was scrapbooking and still have stuff from then that I haven't used. For the last couple of years I've made cards and ATC's more than scrapbooking.
Sorry, I got on a roll. But I hope that with the words of wisdom on this thread I'll break the shopping habit and get back into the craft habit.
Thanks for listening.
I thought I didn't do a whole lot with my stuff but as I have been watching what I've been doing I found that I do actually. I still need to cut way back, and I am going to! But like this Christmas I made 2 scrapbooks and one of them was almost exclusively from "stash" so I guess I'm not quite as bad as I though
Well I missed up already. A whole 5 days into the new year and I spent some money. I went to Michaels (after my orthopedic appt) in need of two things (paper trimmer blades & twine). I they had a ton of clear stamps on clearance. So I snatched up two sets and the blades. They didn't have the twine. $15 later and I was wondering why I did that... hmmm...
Yep, I thought about taking this "oath" last week. I have soooo much stuff. I am trying to design and use what I have THEN go buy what I need to finish the project versus just shopping what I like at the craft stores thining "I'll need this some day". lol We will see how long this last.

I think that is an excellent idea!! I am doing my swaps and of course they are suppose to be identical but I have just decided that if I have different ribbon or a different colour rhinestone or button on them tough patootie! I'm not going to go out and buy a whole new set of something (or 2 or 3 or 6 of them) so every card is identical.
It's funny - I was just looking at Papertreys set - Love Lives here - thinking it was so cute with the house that has the heart punched in the middle.
Then I got to looking at it. Those cute houses are basically a square for the house and a triangle for the roof. And I have a small heart punch that I picked up at Michaels several years ago for $1. I figured I can make those cute houses with either designer paper (of which I have a ton) or make patterned paper with all the stamps I have.
So this thread made me think about the supplies I have on hand before I and spend and it just saved me $24 by not buying that set.
I am a happy stamper!!

GOOD FOR YOU!! Will the people in your swap get together to compare who got blue rhinestones and who got green ones?. Sheesh
Love this thread. I am doing well on not spending and am feeling really good. I have MDS and was on their blog. There was the cutest layouts using SU's Holly Jolly paper. I decided I MUST copy those layouts. I added up how much it would cost and decided to think about it. I realized that I have several different Christmas papers that I have bought and they are really cute. I have some by Echo Park and Cosmo Cricket and Zoe Pearn. I used the SU layouts as inspiration and chose the Echo Park Dashes and EP Sleigh Ride to make my 2010 digital Christmas pages.
I have also been reading about Becky Higgins Project Life 365. I thought it was cool and am using her concept and doing my own project life with MDS. Mine is set up how I want it and I am using what ever papers move me at the moment.
Bonnie, thank you, thank you for starting this thread. Thank you to everyone who has contributed...it has helped keep me motivated to stay on my spending diet.

And now I have people donating them right and left! I work for a family agency and I oragnize big family events....children's summer festival, fall festival, etc. I have carninval games with prizes and thought last year to ask for happy meal toys, stuffed animals in good condition, etc. I've gotten so many Beanie Babies that I have a special game just for them!

Hi! You are quite welcome! I'm glad we are all in this together to motivate each other to be more careful spenders. I know I for one don't feel as alone in this struggle of mine...so, thanks to all of you who have responded! It is such a great feeling to help and support each other.
Hey, if you are into digistamps I have a free one on my blog here

Art is intended to provoke an emotion from a total stranger. If youve succeeded in this, consider yourself an artist. Paper Shanks Blog. Love me or hate me, you are still talking about me
My spending diet slipped the second day (last Sunday) into it............ but I have been using the embellishment that I purchased!!!
A diet is not a hunger strike LOL It is just being aware of what your buy ( eat) and doing it responsibility. Buying what you will use is what it is all about . Buying just to buy seems to be the problem
After watching Tim Holtz' 12 Tags of Christmas, I'm going to use distressing inks on the patterned paper that I have stashed that is not quite the right color!

Bonnie,
Way to go! I know you can do this because I finished 2010 with only spending a little over $30.00 and that was on envelopes and adhesive. I still have enough supplies to where I am again shoooting for sending only on bare necessities-like adhesive).
I'm with you!
Well I knew I wouldn't last long... Not only did I buy those stamps the other day, I went back today. When I was at M's the other day I saw the cricut Jukebox for 39.99. For the past couple of days I was talking myself in and out of going back. Today I went back and I am so glad I did. I got the Jukebox for 9.99, yes I said 9.99. They were also having some of the cricut carts for 9.99. So I bought myself another one and my mom one...
Now I am done... ya right those famous last words, right.. hahahaha

My diet wasn't so great today, but it was within my plan. I went to Mike's and bought the Cricut Gypsy and some other Gypsy items. I actually had been eyeing the Gypsy for some time but refused to spend the money. A week ago I saw it for $99 and almost bought it, but didn't. I don't feel bad because it is something I thought about and decided I could have it if it went to $50 or below. Now...I just need to figure out how to use my cricut and the gypsy. It is on the agenda for this weekend.

That is fantastic!! Very well done.
You must have had some will power to say no.
I struggle to say no to gorgeous stash.. but after reading this thread, you ladies have given me the encouragement I need to think about things first instead of impulse buying just because something 'looks pretty'!
I'm in! I have joked for many years now that I'm a "collector," instead of a crafter because my workroom is overflowing with great deals & too-cutes I couldn't pass up. Too many times I've ended up with duplicates because I didn't realize I already had something. Why? Because I hadn't used it yet! On the bright side, I guess that just shows it's something I really, really wanted, right? ~sigh~
I think this thread is helping me already. (Hope I'm not bragging too soon! ) Yesterday while coloring images with my Sharpies and Bics, I realized I could use a few more colors. Then I got to looking around, and I remembered that I have my coloring pencils and chalks. I used the chalks and pencils together and loved the look. *and used the baby oil with some. Then on others I used the colored pencils and markers. I realized that between the three of those, I have about every color I'd ever need. Now I just have to find some smaller applicators for chalks; hard to get into tiny spots with the regular size, but that's way cheaper than more markers, and I don't have to get those right away. So glad I saw my chalks sitting there; I had forgotten all about using them lately!
So far in 2011 I am doing good! It is really helping by deleting all those emails I was getting from different companies - I deleted all my subscriptions and am loving it. Thanks for that tip, ladies!
Having a tough day as there is an online stamp store based here and they are having their going out of business sale this weekend. Everything is 50% off. I'm having a BD party this evening for my sister and my stamp room is clean and I don't want to mess it up. I'm ready for the party except last minute items so I have a free day. No house cleaning, no laundry, etc. I have plenty of time to go to the sale... no must not shop.... 50% off is still 50% on... must to the sale...no, I don't need anything...helppppppppppppppp meeeeee

If all you will think about all day is the sale and spoil the BD party then leave your credit card and check book home, put $20 in your wallet and go. You can't spend more than $20 and see if you can return home without spending all of it .
If you have stacks of paper be sure you don't add to the stacks LOL
