Default I'm brand new, and I want $4000 worth of stuff, not including stamps

So I made a wish list and since I am pretty new I need it all. So my list which is 95% SU since I plan to be a demo next month, and 5% tools and such that I want totals almost 4K and it doesn't include any stamp sets cause I didn't want to list them all seperately.

Good lord, what do I do lol. My husband cracked up when I told him last night. Please tell me it's ok to go slow. Convince me I don't NEED IT ALL on Day 1. I would love a budget of 400 a month, but I don't think that will happen. I can probably do between 100-200 a month.

I can't wait for Christmas! I have my list all ready!

You don't NEED it all. Especially while you're still figuring out what exactly you like. Plus as a new demo (not that I am one) you should be getting a cool mix of stuff. I vote you play with that, then re examine what you want for your first order with a bigger discount!

You don't NEED it all at once!
To start off with you need: 1 nice image set, 1 good sentiment set, 1 pkg. neutral cardstock like white, 1 pkg of coloured cardstock and 1 good black ink pad. A colouring medium (markers, coloured pencils etc.) is also a good idea. As for tools, you NEED a good paper trimmer and good adhesive. A 1/16th hole punch for with brads (since they are one of the cheapest embellishments to start with) is pretty useful too. You do need something to clean your stamps, but baby wipes will work (make sure they have no alcohol in them).

LOL!

Yes, it's perfectly ok to go slow. Your budget (and sanity) will thank you for it.

My recommendation is to start off with paper, ink, a great paper cutter, some basic embellishments, a few all-purpose stamps sets, and a couple of sets you absolutely adore. I think you'll find that a few basics will allow you more creativity than you'd expect.

Pace yourself and have fun with all of your soon-to-be new goodies!

Welcome to my world LOL~

Thank goodness for holidays, bonuses and ebay.

It honestly is BETTER to go slowly in the buying department. I just started stamping about 4 months ago and I already have plenty of things that I regret purchasing.

Start with the basics.

A GOOD trimmer. You can buy 3 or 4 crappy ones before laying out the cash for a good one, or you can save yourself the hassle and money and just buy a good one from the start.

Good adhesive. Whether you are making scrapbooks or cards, you don't want them to fall apart, right? I invested in an ATG 714 gun and it ROCKS! It's also very economical when the cost is amortized over time. Cheaper than the little tape runners. But I don't know if you can use it being a SU demo.

Good white cardstock for stamping. I currently have Neenah, but am going to try PTI soon.

Quality inks and stamp cleaners.

Fancy tools like BIA, cricut, Klik N Kut, Cuttlebug, etc can all come later as you have a better idea what your "style" is.

I'm trying to develop a budget too, so I completely feel your pain. Good luck!

You don't need it all at once. I agree with the PP. Start off slowly...buy the basics.

Once you find your nitch and your style you can then start buying things to further your creativity.

I look back at all the stuff I bought in the begining and it never gets used anymore.

in fact you are better off NOT getting it all at once. all that stuff at once will be overwhelming to say the least.

go slow, buy basics and then add more toys slowly.

Good Lord, you're worse than me ~ My first wishlist was only $1200 and my husband did NOT laugh!

I did have to pace myself, and after I established my priorities I used the free/discounted merchandise option to get certain things (like background stamps).

After three years with SU, I do have almost everything in the ACCESSORIES catagory (and so glad there is always something new!) so I use my benefits to replace cardstock and wornout markers.

I love the free sets we get, and some of those become hostess gifts. A year after they retire, I can sell extras and use that money to get more new merchandise.

It takes a while, but you WILL get your wishlist items!

So, do you want to sign up under me, LOL (just kidding everyone)
But seriously, you don't need it all at once, I would invest in some good tools, the cutter, the scissors, get some assortment packs of paper, get the spots or stick with one color family at first. There are always specials for signing up, so know when you sign up, you will be getting some stamp sets. Go with what you love for stamp sets, cuz you will use them alot! Find someone else who loves it as well and then you can share! When you do sign up, ask your upline and sidelines before you buy something, Sometimes we share sets, that we can demo, so that we don't have to purchase everything! Definitely sign up for the demo side of SCS, great ideas on how to start out your business! Go slow and let everyone you know, that you have a wish list and that you would be so happy if they got you something off of that! Good luck to you!

Wow! My wish list that includes all the stamp pads and the spinner thingie to keep them in, stamp sets, In Colors, cardstock etc was only about $500. Granted, I already had tons of supplies from scrapping, but still.....

What all do you want for $2300? I'm so curious now. :-D

LOL! That's some list!

I think since you are just starting out, you can certainly wait to get the reinkers later, right? And I might wait on a lot of the carts for the wheel thingies until you try them and decide if you really like the concept. I've heard of quite a few people who don't.

Also many of the things on your non-SU list can be bought cheaper than you have listed. Overstock.com has the nesties for $19.99 every day and there is a 10% off coupon floating around too. You can also use the 40% VIP at cutathome.com on nesties.

I bought my Cuttlebug with a 50% off coupon at ACMoore, but you can do the same at Michaels. They usually have those for holidays like Labor Day. M's also has VersaMark and Versa fine in black and brown.

I got my 120 set of Prismas on ebay for $63 shipped.

Good luck!

ROFL! I would start out order combo packs of cardstock. That way you atleast get to sample all the colors. And the markers or stampin spots might be a good start for you to.Taht way you are getting all the colors with out breaking the bank all at once. WI will never forget when I first saw the SU catalog---I wanted it all imediatly. LOL! Needless to say, I had to start out slow. I still want half of every new catty though. LOL! Good luck with your conquest.

Try craigslist to get all or at least some of your stamp pads cheaper. I got most of mine for $2 to $3 a pad.

One thing you could think about doing is buying assorted packages of the paper and just get your absolute favorite colors individually to start with.

Another way I can think of to whittle this price down some more is that if you get all the classic stamp pads, you could get some blender pens or aqua painter and use those to color with instead of buying the markers and crayons at this time. This is what I did until I bought the crayons. And I still don't have the markers, I find that using my pads and crayons is enough for me.

Something else that I did that saved me some money is I bought the craft spots rather than full sized pads.

Welcome to this hobby! It is addicting to buy this stuff, believe me!

Default WOW!

I agree with the others saying to start slow & build your supplies in stages. You will get overwhelmed with so much stuff & won't know where to begin. I also suggest taking some classes or seeing if your demo offers any workshops/classes - this will give you some idea on what you like/don't like.

Agreed about the combo pack of cardstock - this will give you an opportunity to get a feel for what your color preferences are, etc. Seriously, you'll be mad at yourself if you spend $$ on cs colors that you really don't care for/won't use.

Now if you're really determined to spend $100-$200 a month, you might want to consider becoming a hobby demo for SU - this will give you the bennies. :-)

Relax, have fun, go slow & let your creativity evolve naturally.

:-) Anne

Hey, I like your attitude! Just keep it a "wish" list for now because you WILL find that your tastes will change. And, when the new SU catty comes out in August, you will have an entirely NEW wish list....

Enjoy!

I love your post, You remind me of myself when I started. I agree with the above, go with the assorted CS first. See what COLOR GROUPS you like best & then start slowly buying those ink pad- 5 years later, I now have all the ink pads but some are much more well used than others! For example, I am an Earth Elements Righ Regal stamper- my bold brights are barely touched. My friend makes beautiful bright cheery cards & she uses bold brights all the time! Her yoyo yellow pad has been through the wringer, while mine still looks brand new. So go slow, as a demo you will have the opportunity to buy from yourself. I was a demo for a couple of years, it is a great way to build up your personal supply of stuff. Good luck, have fun!

I think you still have room to get your list down. I agree that you don't need the re-inkers yet, and to pick favorite colors of paper. Also with the nesties, you don't really need them all, as far as the different sizes go. IMO you don't need squares and rectangles b/c those can be easily cut with trimmer. But the scallops, circles and ovals are nice to have.

I think starting slow is best...I know a lot of times on here there are discussions about what items people bought when they first started that they don't use or regret buying.

Also check out the Buy/Sell/Trade forum b/c there is constant SU supplies on there. Also, are you brand new to stamping or just SU? Have you thought about non-SU? Just something to think about...have fun shopping!

i started very slowly.. realize that when you have workshops you only do a couple of cards! my first demo only had a few stamp pads and a whole color family and a couple sets! you don't need to wow your customers with product, you just need to show them the basics (cause a lot of time workshop-goers don't even know that).. i've been stamping 2 years now, and i'm finally where i want to be supply-wise!

OMG, honey, you are hooked! I was the same way, so don't think I'm criticizing you. I love your enthuasism!

OK, my suggestion round up (some ideas already said) for what it's worth:
Now:
combo paper packs
classic ink pads
craft ink spots
ww cardstock
vv cardstock
versamark
black stazon
clear embossing powder (detail)
heat gun
bone folder
good cutter (tonic, carl, whatever you decide)
stamp and scrub
cleaner mist
stamp sets you like
aquapainter (to water color)
some $1 ribbon from Michaels
adhesive
envelopes
rubber scissors
paper snips

Later, baby! Later:
ATG gun (not on your list, but you may want this)
Reinkers
Prismacolor pencils and gamsol (what if you discover you're not the 'coloring type'?
WW crayons (same logic as above)
paper punches- especially if nesties are on your list... you don't need both - check to make sure your sizes don't overlap..
chalks/pastels
lightbox/embossing templates/stylus
SU wheels/jumbo wheels - I honestly do not use mine much and I do not buy cartridges, I just ink up off a pad when I do use it
Cricuit/Pazzles/ etc... any of those big ticket items

Honestly, do what you feel is best. I of course, wanted everything too, when I started. Part of the fun was getting things over time. I started in Feb 2004 and by Feb 2005 pretty much had everything I "needed"- in fact, I did a wholesale clean out of things I determined weren't my style since it does take a little time for your style to evolve.

This is a fun process... have a great time discovering who you are as a stamper and WELCOME to our world!!!

First I shouldn't give advice since I am supposed to have $100 a month budget but usually spend $300.......and I blew through 10k in 3 months!

BUT

Try the assorted SU! paper packs FIRST so you can find out what colors you really like working with. I happen to hate the bold brights so you might not want/need every color SU! has.

Check out the buy/sell/trade forums here for items you are wanting for cheap.

Also if you are new then Splitcoast and all the blogs will have their own enabling, you might find a bunch of other stuff that you want and wish you didn't buy what you did.

And bloggers (like me) regularly sell stuff on their blogs that they want to get rid of. Like a 98 set of Prisma pencils for 20 bucks. (This isn't a plug, I sold them months ago and was just using it as an example)

And lastly:
You get 30% off your first SU! demo order, so essentially the more you order the more you save.

First of all - Elizabeth (ebethneu), was your former avatar really old or is this a brand new look for you?! You look FAB!

Definitely, Erin, go slow!! You are going to be a (very enthusiastic!) demo and you will get a bunch of stuff right off the bat!! Then you'll have your extra 10% discount on top of the 20% for your first order. Pace yourself. Spend some time working with the basics and find out what YOU like the most.

I started out slowly and it's been a ton of fun. You don't want to overwhelm yourself. Besides, you will always have that 20% discount while you're a demo.

I found that I added a few things here and there when I discovered a new technique I wanted to try. But you really need to have some hands-on before you know what clicks with you. I knew right away I liked nature sets and Earth Elements colors ~ of course, I've added and grown in what I'm comfortable using.

It's only been 1-1/2 years for me since I went to my first SU workshop and a lot of things on your list I have either only recently purchased or still don't have. I probably have more ink pads than I need and still don't have them all. Same with punches - if you have too much, sometimes you neglect it anyway. There are only so many hours in the day!!

Your enthusiasm is absolutely wonderful and refreshing and I'm reminded of the hours I sat and looked at my first couple of catalogs.... oh boy. Maybe I shouldn't have brought *that* up ... but yes - you will have even more to choose from.

These marvelous ladies who wrote before me have given you GREAT advice on the specifics - what you NEED and what you might like down the road, and they are far more experienced than I am so I won't even get redundant about that. But this I will say -- there will ALWAYS be more, always something new that catches your eye and wins your heart.... enjoy the journey and take it a little at a time. Have fun and learn what YOU love when you use it

And keep up that wonderful spirit ~ it will be great fun to watch your gallery grow and hear how you are doing!!

Best wishes to you!!

Talking

I agree with what alot of the prior posts say. Here is my input:

#1 - Pick one or two color families and buy variety packs of cardstock and ink spots . I only have full sized ink pads in brown, black and sahara sand. Once you see what colors you like and use the most, then buy the pack of individual colors for cardstock.
#2 - You don't need every color of neutral cardstock. I use white all the time. I buy mine from Wal-Mart, Georgia Pacific 110 lb cardstock for $5.48 for 150 sheets. I have recently purchased some Kraft and Cream from Papertrey Ink but have not used it much yet.
#3 - Hold off on craft ink. It takes so long to dry and unless you have a project in mind, pass on them. I would only buy a white one though. You do need a good white ink.
#4 - Pass on the re-inkers. You don't need them right away. I have some but I rarely use them except to dye ribbon.
#5 - Pass on all the 12x12 cardstock. I would think that as a demo, it will be easier to teach cards than scrapbook pages.
#6 - Prioritize your punches. I love punches but you don't need them in every size. For circles, I would get 1 1/4", 1 3/8" and scalloped because you will use them more and they coordinate with several SU stamps. I would get the corner rounder and ticket punch for a change in the shape of your paper. All the others are cool but are for more specific uses. Keep it basic!
#7 - Choose a medium to color. You do not need markers, pastels, watercolor crayons and watercolor pencils. If you want to try watercoloring, I would suggest watercolor crayons with a blender pen but get them to match the color families from #1. Otherwise, go to Wal-Mart and get a big 50 pack of Crayola colored pencils. Those are just as fun to color in outlined images and will cost you only $8.
#8 - Pass on the Primacolor pencils. Same reason as above in #7.
#9 - Pass on the wheels and ink cartridges. They are great for making background paper for scrapbooking but I don't use them in my cards as much as I could. I am actually thinking of downsizing some of mine because they don't get used and take up so much room. Check eBay for some good deals. That's how I got most of mine.
#10 - Pass on the Cuttlebug. Although it is cool, it not necessary. Ask for it for Christmas and definitely use a 40% or 50% off coupon from Michael's, AC Moore or Joanns. Watch the ads! I am still undecided on one for myself so I bought some Fiskars Texture Templates ($11.99 at Target for 12 designs) and a stylus. It takes alot longer but if you decide that you like the look of a textured background, they can be used in the Cuttlebug.
#11 - Pass on the Nestibilities. While they are awesone, they are not a must and you need the Cuttlebug.

I hope my suggestions helped. In the beginning you want everything but having buyer's regret is worse. Plus you need to save money to buy some stamps. When I started stamping, I had more stamps than supplies and I have acquired supplies as I went on and as my finances allowed me. What good are supplies if you have no stamps!!!

When you are ready to make a wish list of stamps, get some universal or multi-use sets, sentiments and a few background stamps.

Good luck and have fun!

P.S. I love your enthusiam! Plus if you do get all those things, can we be friends? We are actually neighbors, I live in Wales, MA (Western MA). Where are you?

Wow - if I had given item by item advice, it would be pretty much identical to djuseless's!!

I thought I'd add that for a coloring medium, customers are really WOW'd when you do this: Squeeze the stamp pad so that you get some ink in the lid and then use it as a palette with an aquapainter or blender pen. Even beginners feel like this is something they can master and love it.

But I would save up for the SU markers - they are very versatile and I love them dearly. You can use them to color different parts of a stamp in different colors and learn to blend them too. My demo offered them on a club plan so you could spread out the payment.

And everything Diane said, I think was right on!!

If you want prismas, get them on ebay--you can get them for less than 1/2 price of retail.

Don't buy full packs of every color paper. Get the multipack with a few of each color.

Don't buy the nesties all at once. Buy one shape first to see if you even like them.

I made the mistake of buying close to $750 of stuff all at once and have yet to use some of the stamp sets because my taste changed before I had a chance to use them. You'll find that your taste will quickly evolve in the beginning.

Just to add my $.02 - on nestabilities the best deal I have seen is Ucutathome and they pretty much make you pace out your desires if you want the monthly discount.

Wink Queen of OCD

Thanks Nancy for backing me up! I must admit though, when I get into a new hobby I need everything and I want it now. It is so hard for me to refrain from buying things since I am convinced that I am OCD. I am also a quilter, do I need to explain how much fabric I have stored in the closet of my craft room? Plus I also do machine embroidery. Do you really want to know how many different colors of thread I have?

So when I typed out my list of advice, I am speaking from experience. I have bought and sold so many stamps sets because I thought I needed it. Plus, wait until we introduce you to other stamp companies outside of SU, like Papertrey Ink. I love them! I just discovered them in February and I already have 25 stamp sets. See what I mean!!!

Yes, I'd definitely say you don't need all the reinkers. Your ink pads should last a good while without them! I went a couple of years, and I use my inks a lot! Do you like to color? If so, definitely choose a good coloring medium. I love the Watercolor Wonder Crayons, but I also like using the ink pads themselves to watercolor. Remember, you can squeeze the top and bottom of the closed ink pad cartridge together so that some ink pools on the underside of the lid, then dip an AquaPainter in that to watercolor as well. Really, just think about the styles that YOU enjoy using, and play with the products that match up with that for a while. You'll learn as you go what you'll like and USE! ;)

You've gotten a lot of fabulous advice already, and just let me add that you seriously should hold back just a bit  I was a demo for six years, and honestly bought way more than I should have and have now been selling it off for pennies on a dollar (and yes, I did have a *few* stamp sets that increased in value, but frankly those are definitely not the norm). Buy some assorted packs of cardstock and see which colors you use up first. The spots are a great way to try colors, too, with blender pens as a good coloring medium. And hold off with the stamp sets, too. Try to limit yourself to 10 or so initially, and play around with them to see what style is really "you." I know when I was demo'ing I ordered a ton of things simply because I thought my customers would want to see them... But quite frankly I didn't sell enough of any one thing to justify the initial cost. So buy what you know you'll use long-term, and have fun with it!

Wowza! That is some wish list!

When I first started stamping only one year ago I wanted it all too. I'm glad I took the advice of these smart ladies here on SCS and didn't go crazy buying. If you start off slowly you will get a chance to use everything and see what you prefer. There are so many choices and decisions and options. It could be overwhelming. If I could do it all over again, I would get the ink spots instead of the full size pads. That way you could decide what are your "go to" colors. I would get the assorted packs of cardstock. Buy some of the important tools like adhesive, scissors, paper trimmer. Get yourself some stamp sets that give you versatility. Sentiment stamps are always needed. Look at the gallery and see which sets really wow you.

I ended up having so much stuff that I traded a bunch of stuff. And right now I still have so much stuff that I have joined a 30 day no spending challenge. It's tough, but I'm finding that I have things that I have never even touched!!

Good luck with everything. Being an SU demo is LOTS of fun!!!

Did I read that right...56$ worth of Stickles?? If so, girl, you do not need 56 bucks worth of glitter glue. Buy 1 or 2 bottles to start with...you will not need every color...maybe get a clear one and one that is your fave color...you can add on as you go.

Sounds like you are getting lots of good advice, from the above postings...unless you have tons of moola, I'd heed the advice. Buyers remorse is not fun. Believe me, I know. Anyone need an ATG gun??

WOW! That's some list! I don't think I could even read it all let alone buy it all! LOL!

It seems like you are off to a good start if you invest in cardstock and inks. Accessories are great too. If you have those things you can make many different cards with just a few stamp sets.

HOWEVER I agree with everyone when they say buy the combo/multi packs and pick your favorites as you go. I have been stamping for a year and a half and have not needed any refills yet with the exception of my Black Stazon. So you can get those as you need them.

Good luck and have fun!

Everyone on here has had great suggestions for you.

Holy cow!! :O I was wondering how on earth to put my thoughts down when I read Diane's response and it was just what I was thinking. Good advice.

You don't need it all at once. We live in such an instant society that we can't wait for anything. Well, we can, and should. We can start very nicely with one or two color families, (multipacks), a good stamp set and a trimmer. Pace yourself. Next order get some more.

(I was also thinking that if we followed that advice in all parts of our lives we wouldn't be in debt up to our eyeballs... but that is another topic for another soapbox )

Good luck on your decisions, and enjoy every step, and everytime you get something new, you'll appreciate it more.

Most definitely you DO NOT need it all!

Give yourself some time to determine
(1) that you really like this hobby/obsession and will stick with it;
(2) what your "style" (or likes and dislikes) is/are.

I have some things that I bought when I was first starting out that I hardly ever use because as I started playing around and gained more experience, I figured out that my style wasn't compatible with those colors or papers or techniques or embellishments.

Besides, your style will change and evolve, and trends come and go, so I find it best not to buy everything as soon as it hits the market, and you certainly don't need "one of everything." You'll end up wasting money as your style or tastes change or evolve, and as trends come and go.

Wow! I agree with all of the advice here. Start slow and see what you like. I started stamping last July and went crazy. (I tend to get a little obsessed about new things, thus the screen name!) Your "style" will be different in 6 months than it is right now. I would start out with the basics and play until you determine what *you* really like.
I, too, suggest getting the craft spots rather than the full-sized pads, and I wouldn't even get those to start with. I also love the idea of getting the color-family packs of paper with 3 of each color in them until you determine which colors you gravitate toward. Also, depending on whether you will be a "workshop" demo or a hobby demo...maybe look into getting your punches and other accessories through other, less expensive sources (many other SU demos are not going to agree on this one) where you can use coupons, etc. I am a hobby demo and a serious bargain shopper. I love to have all the new toys, but I do my homework first and find the best deals out there. Regardless, have fun and enjoy getting started!
