Default I want to color better - are there any books out there?

I love using my prismacolor pencils and gamsol and I have a nice supply of Copics, even took the Certification class but I have absolutely no training on shading, highlighting, etc. and I have yet to find a resource really other than You Tube, observing how others do it, etc. Does anyone know of a workbook or other instructional material that teaches those concepts other than huge art books?

I'm not really sure about books and since you are copic certified you probably already have this site. She has a lot of shading and highlighting information.

Dave Brethauer from Memory Box has a few books out on coloring with colored pencils and watercolors.

You might want to try Arlene Steinberg's books. One is Colored Pencil Techniques. She also has a website, a fabulous website. Her technique book is excellent and even shows step by step layering of colors and shading. Also try: Colored Pencil Artists Association website.

Arlene Steinberg's book is Masterful Color: Colored Pencil Techniques Layer by Layer.

I'll chime in and agree with Minneapple about Arlene Steinberg's book, Masterful Color. While this is geared for people who draw/color their own images, the techniques can be applied to stampers.
In fact, in the back of the book she provides outlined images for people to copy so that they can practice coloring. The book is a wonderful source!

OP--You're looking for instruction on where to place highlights and shadows, right? Arlene Steinberg's book is excellent, but it would be most helpful for color theory. There are some wonderful drawing and shading tutorials at these sites: Wet Canvas (free) and Drawspace (for a small fee).

Sounds like you would benefit from a color theory class. I think My Creative Classroom offers an online color theory class. The Coloring Craze Part 1- taught by Colleen Schaan who is awesome!!! I took her copic class and it was very well done.

It looks like you get shading, highlighting, and colorblocking instruction for several different mediums like pencils, copics, watercolor...etc...

There are a lot of really good videos on youtube. I'm a visual learner and watching some of the different videos really helped me when I was learning to use my copic markers. Good luck!

Thank you everyone so much! Can't wait to check out the books and websites recommended! The Copic certification was great but they tell you up front the course is not about color theory, etc but how copics work and blending. So it was great but I have so much more to learn!!
