We close on our new house in two days, and as a present to myself I am going to indulge in the equipment for one new technique that I haven't done before. which, sad to say..is most of them.
I look through all these wonderous galleries and I get all sorts of inspiration..until I realize I need a heat embossing gun, or a coluzzle or some such.
Now I have emailed my SU! Rep to send me the new Catalog and sale-a-bration flyer, but in the meantime, if you had one favorite style that you just cannot live without, which would it be?
My latest was simple dry embossing with the brass templates( not brave or enough or rich enough to spring for a machine that does it all quite yet)
Simply fell in love with the brayered sky tutuorial, went ga ga over split negative and am blown away by pasty razzle dazzle.
I vote heat embossing gun, a Versamark pad, and a couple of jars of embossing powder.
It's simple, fun, and it'll really blow your mind the first time you try it. At least it did me, when I was starting out a few years ago. :-)
Plus, it'll add a classiness and elegant touch to your cards that you'll soon be addicted to! And it will open up doors to plenty of new techniques (and new goodies).
I agree with Ann. Embossing is extremely cool. Get clear, gold, and black embossing powders to start, and you can add special effects, glittery, etc. as you go.
Another vote for the embossing gun, it's a stamping staple that every respectable stamper must have in their collection. Thats what I tell my DH whenever I need a new toy, but seriously the gun is a must!

heheh well, I already have versamark and use it a lot..although not with glitter or anything. I just tend to pick a very small stamp that coordinates with the overall design and stamp in versamark on the inside corner of the card where the signature goes.
I can use the 'it's my birthday' excuse too.. my birthday is at the end of the month.
actually you can heat emboss in any color (limited to the ink colors you have) that you want...
stamp in versamark
then in what ever color ink you want
and use CLEAR embossing powder
heat and BAM!!!
of course i learned this after i had been buying different colors of EP
good luck and happy stamping!
Also if you're quick to apply the Clear EP you don't even have to dip in the versa, just plain classic SU ink will stay wet enough to accept the EP. I didn't belive it until I tried it.

i have not had good luck doing this with the classic inks... they dry too fast for me.
i have done it with the craft inks and not had to use the versamark.

I use this method too - my classic pads are not juicy enough for me to emboss with alone.
To the OP - heat embossing is not terribly expensive and you can get a lot of bang for your buck. I would get a Versamark pad, clear EP, Black EP, Gold EP, and Silver EP. There are tons of techniques that use embossing!

Remember that you can get an embossing gun at Hobby Lobby, Michael's or similar store and use a store coupon to purchase it. The SU one is great, but if money is an issue you can get one much cheaper at Michael's with a coupon. Then you might be able to buy more with the money you saved. Also, embossing can be used on A LOT of different styles of cards, where as the other techniques you mentioned when you great for a few "wow" cards, but they aren't as versatile.
Very new to this myself but I LOVE embossing! Got a heat gun with a 40% off coupon and bought some EP in the store also. MISTAKE! Have had much better, clearer, brighter looking embossing with SU! EP.
I also vote for heat embossing. It adds an elegance to every card, and it's so much FUN! I just love watching the powder melt. Every time, I think, "Oh, dear, this time it's not going to melt." And then it does. Big fun!
Great question! I've recently decided to buy the heat gun & EP during sale-a-bration next month. I've never done it so the tips in this thread, along with help from my demo, are most appreciated.
Great question! I have been thinking of getting the gun and the cuttlebug. I love how both look.
Those who have the gun, do most of you get one from SU or Michael's/Hobby Lobby? Just wondering if the quality is an issue...............
I think quality can be an issue. I bought a Marvy heat gun before I became a demo and it works fine, but if it ever breaks I will buy the SU one. I've used a friend's that is not a Marvy or SU gun and it took a long time to heat up. I almost blew my EP off the card instead of melting it.
Well, just in case you need another idea - I do think heat embossing is probably just the best - how about trying the watercolor wonder crayons? There are many ways to play with them to increase your coloring skills like learning how to shade and blend colors, mixing colors, using the versamarker over what you have colored and then embossing.
The first "toy" I ever got was a Marvy heat embossing gun & mine is still going strong after many years of use. I agree with everyone else - another vote for the embossing gun!

I agree. I have both SU & the Marvy heat gun, and while SU!'s is better, it's not THAT much better. The EP, on the other hand, is MUCH better. Only buy SU! or another big, reliable name, like Ranger for EP. And for the black, make sure you get the detail. It's more expensive but SOOOOO worth it. I couldn't last five minutes with my SU Black Detail EP!
Okay---- I LOVE heat embossing and like the other replies I find you can do alot with the powders and Versamark. I find myself using the metallic powders the most. I will also go out on a limb and tell you if you love using die cuts on your projects the Cricut Cutting System has been the best investment I have ever made. I LOVE it!
