I received a card from a friend who also makes cards.
The white card base was 4 1/4 by 5 1/2, but then she glued a sheet of black cardstock 1/4 bigger on the back of it! I really like it, just hadn't seen it before.
I do this except the back cardstock piece is regular card size and the white or vanilla card is a 1/2 inch smaller all the way around. I love to do this especially is I am making the card end up too heavy to stand up to the white or vanilla to stand on it's own.

When I do this, the colored back piece is 4 1/4 x 5 1/2. The cardbase is 4 x 10 1/2 folded at 5 1/4. It looks just like a standard card when it's laying flat.
I just read a thread that mentions "remaking" cards that have been signed by the person who actually made it. So I would never make a card like the one you describe because I would worry that the person who receives it might think it was a "remade" card.
