I don't what to do, what would you do?? (if anything)
My husbands cousin is going on a 3 yr 'vacation' trip all over the world. Him and his girlfriend are leaving in November, and we are going out next Saturday to say our "goodbye's". I want to give them a gift, but not sure if that is weird, or not. They are coming back eventually. We aren't really close to this particular cousin, although we have visited him the most out of the realitives on his side. He's in his early 30's and his girlfriend is not too much younger than me, I'm 29. I was thinking of buying them a journal, and or making them a few cards so that they can 'write' home and not have to buy any note cards. Also was thinking of buying them some film for their camera, if they have a 35mm camera and not a digital (have to phone the aunt for that one)
What should I do? My daughter woke up at 5 this morning, and i took her back to bed, and I couldn't get to sleep thinking about this, and what I should do  Maybe Nothing? Just a journal? I dunno...Help

I think a journal would be a very nice gift. That way they could document all the cool places they are going to go. Wow! A 3 year trip around the world! What an adventure!

A journal may be a nice idea if they don't already have something. Otherwise, you might just bring over something yummy to snack on while you're visiting. Chances are if they are moving around quite a bit they won't really want things to take with them. If it's really a vacation, then wouldn't they want to send home postcards? kwim?
I too think a journal would be a great idea. One more idea that I had is a prepaid phone card so they can call home occasionally. My mother recently went to China for vacation and couldn't read the instructions on the phone cards she bought there! She did eventually find someone to help her, but it might be nice to have a few in English.
WOW what an opportunity and millions of us would want to take.
I think a journal is a great idea along with the cards. I'm sure they will get used. Film is a great idea also or even a card for a digital is great also.
Now I LOL'd when I read.........
" Now, see, my brother took a six year vacation, but he just went and lived at my mom's house."
My brother did the same thing, only he didn't have a journal nor photos....LOL
Cool!! Ya, i wasn't sure on the cards, cause when he does go away (this isn't his first time) he does send post cards. I love the idea of a prepaid phone card!! I think I might phone his mom and see if there was anything she knew that they needed...
Thanks Ladies!!!
I'm sooo excited for him, and already excited to receive post cards!!! LOL

I like the idea of a journal... And maybe put an internation calling card in there so they can call home a few times during their three year vacation...
Yikes!!! My job only gives me 5 weeks a year... I need a job like your husband's cousin!!!
My DD and SIL just returned in June from a 11-month trip around the world with nothing but their backpacks. Since every little thing your cousin takes is so important, how about a phone card; it doesn't take up much room. My kids established a "journal" web site so whenever they could get to internet cafes (which was quite often), they could post to the journal web site and those of us who had access to it could keep up with them.
That's pretty much what they are doing!!
I don't know if they will be doing the journal website blog thing, but I'm sure I will find out next week!! That would be cool if they did!!
Thanks for the idea!

Boy am I weird! The thought of leaving my stamping stuff for 3 years is not a happy one, I don't like living out of a suitcase for that long. The journal sounds like a great idea.

How about making a page or two of address labels to tuck into their journal so that it will be easy for them to address their postcards? Ten or so labels with mom's address, ten with yours, ten with other sister, etc...

The phone card could be a good idea, but I am not sure if ones sold in the US work overseas. This kind of thing changes a lot.
The journal sounds like a good idea, as are address labels.
If they can afford to take a three year vacation, they probably don't need a phone card - LMAO- just teasing! The journal sounds cool and you could alter it, spiff it up, etc. You sound very thoughtful to do something like this when you aren't particularly close.

I agree. Maybe 2 weeks max but I would hate being away from home that long. God knows I'd never sleep....I can't sleep without my fan going even in the dead of winter. I would never do that.
Oh, then my brother is on a 36 year vacation. He's NEVER moved out!! Man, they must be RICH to be able to do that. Holy cow. I like to travel, but I love home even more. I'd miss my surroundings after about a month probably!
Cool, though...
And yes... I'd do cards and a journal or whatever. If you want to, do it... don't lose any more sleep over it!
What about a couple of goodies for their actual flight? A Sudoku book, crossword puzzles, a couple of chocolate bars (in a nice stamped wrapper), etc. LOVE the idea of a journal and maybe a few "thanks for your hospitality" type cards for people they might meet and/or stay with along the way??
