Oh yes- I often did this. Now I have the same system as dogzruleca- I bought a binder that I stamped all my stamp images into, listed all my stamp pads, inks, made glitter colour swatches, ribbon swatches, punches & embossing folder /brass stencil swatches etc. Took some time, but mainly I just made two whenever I used something.Anything I duped in the past, I passed on to my DIL.
I love my sample binder for more than just avoiding duplicates. It's a great resource to look through when I want to make something. I flip through and see what stamps I want to use, which inks go together (I have samples of those too, not just listings), if something will fit, etc. It also helps me to find what I need since the CTHM catagories are colour coded, I look to see what colour it is and the title, so I know where in my stamp room to look for it. I couldn't do anything without that binder!

I keep a binder with samples of EVERYTHING: markers, pens, ink pads, stamps, punches, decorative scissors, nesties, stencils, embossing powders, cricut cartridges, dies, embossing folders...well, ok, everything except paper, but I do have a sample ring of all my CTMH cardstock. I never get two of anything by accident.
Besides the sample binder (which I always take shopping with me), I have a inventory spreadsheet for my CTMH purchases. That has a listing of every paper pack, stamp, etc. I also go through every catalogue (I keep all my past ones, too) and highlight any new purchase. For me, updating these methods of inventory control is part of the fun of a new purchase and the phrase obsessive compulsive rarely comes up. ;)
That having been said, I do have duplicate stamps. I'm a CTMH fan and sometimes I've qualified for more than one free Stamp of the Month or bought multiples of a kit that has a stamp in it. I've also bought grab bags at greatly discounted prices and they usually have at least one stamp set that I already have. I figure someday I'll sell, swap or giveaway the spares.
Have I in the past yes...annoyed me enough to get organized ...I carry a small leather notebook containing an inventory of everything except paper and embellishments...can always use dups of these ...no more dups of those things you can't use ...and its fun adding new purchases to my stash!
Wow there art a lot of stampers that do the same thing I do!! Have duplicates that I have returned to the store for credit and still have some that I didn't realize I had until I was reorganizing my stamp room. (am still reorganizing my stamp room but I do see clear spaces ahead) LOL We are in the middle of the snow storm and I wanted to stamp and DH wants to remove wallpaper from grown D room. OK I will give him a couple of hours and then that's it. We are both retired and since the weather is bad he needs something to keep him busy. Have a great day. Jean GBY
I am ashamed to say that I bought a Cricut cartridge last night, Actually, I bought 2 last night on ebay and bought exactly the same thing! Ugh! I thought I had been outbid on one. It is one of the stupidest things I have ever done! It is Paper Lace. I really, really wanted that one, but not two! How dumb can you get.
BTW, today was a better day. Much better! LOL

Oh yeah - know how you feel - I did the same with some embossing folders - all on the same day too! So don't feel bad - I'm sure that if you really, really wanted it, someone else will definitely buy it if you decide to re-sell it. At least we can sell our "duplicate" things and it's not like food that goes off - well, that's what I tell myself so I feel better!
I've only done that a couple of times with inexpensive dollar stamps and a cat punch. But I have had to go out and intentionally buy something, because I could'nt find what I was looking for. Right now, some of my adhesives are AWOL, and I have two cat stamps that I haven't found. GGRRR! Can you tell I'm still in the process of organizing my room? I think this is going to be a slow process; hard to find time during the holidays. Although, if I had an extensive collection of stamps and supplies (I have a good, yet, modest amount of supplies) ; I could see where it would happen from time to time.

Thanks for consoling me! Yes, I do want to resell it. I paid $28 with no shipping in case anyone is interested.
I've bought several duplicate stamps in mixed bags or sets at yard sales and the thrift shop. Sometimes the same bag has duplicates in it! I tried to give some to my aunt, but she has very different aesthetic tastes in stamps than I do. I'm planning to do a cardmaking day at church "sometime" and may give some of the duplicates away like doorprizes.
I noticed some company (Inkadinkadoo?) duplicates stamps in the foam backed sets. So I got some duplicates where the sets overlap.
Buying stuff online is definitely a risk for this. I ordered Season 1 of Monk on DVD. I couldn't hear the commentary, so ordered another copy. They cancelled my order, so I ordered again. They sent the original order. So the library got the extra copies.
It's a good thing I like to categorize, inventory, label, and organize. I also have a binder with all of my images, ink, paper, pencils, etc. Smartest thing I ever did (besides finding this site).
I'm consistently drawn to the same things, over and over. I once realized that I owned three 3/4 sleeve green cardigans. When I started stamping I ended up buying a ton of butterfly stamps and no get well or sympathy sayings. Oops.

I'm probably the most disorganised person I know (apart from my eldest son, whom my DIL says has obviously got my untidy gene), but I too had to resort to cataloguing all my stamps, inks etc etc- I either completely forgot I had something & bought it again, or, especially with stamps, just forgot I had it, so it lay unused.
Interesting about the lack of sentiment stamps, I found this- I had hundreds of images, but apart from a couple of Happy Birthday/ Christmas, no word stamps at all. I have gradually tried to get myself a respectable assortment to cover most occasions over the last couple of years.
Shortly after I posted, I was cataloging my new prismacolor pencils and realized I had purchased one I already had, even though I consulted my list when placing the order and had that color marked as one I owned.
It was happening with my stamping group. So when we met last Monday, we altered a MS chipboard book (that I had bought several of thinking we would do a recipe book ;-), and made dividers for SU stamps, punches, dies or embossing folders, copic marker colors, and whatever else they want to add. I made index pages of all their SU stamps.
I got home from M's the other night all excited because I found the car charger for my Gypsy for just $4.99. I opened my Gypsy bag to put it in and guess what I found? The car charger that came with my Gypsy when I bought it. DUH! So I guess that one is going back! So, do I buy duplicates? Evidently, yes, yes I do.
