I don't have a scrap room with an abundance of stuff. I store extra small things in photo boxes.
I decided to make Post-It Note holders with matching pens as a stocking stuffer for my kids. Some time ago I bought the acrylic holders at Walmart and put them away. Today I went "specifically" to the Dollar store to buy the RSVP pens. Got home with them and when I was putting them in the photo box with the acrylic holders I saw that I already had them .
I was really bad with this problem when it came to ordering SU stamps so I started keeping a list of what I have and my demo keeps a list as well so I don't get two of the same set.
I'm sad to say, the mind does tend to falter and I end up with duplicates occasionally. I just RAK them to stampers I know that can't afford to buy as much stuff as I can.
Not very often, but I did manage to do it on my last SU! order - I didn't duplicate something I already had, but I did manage to get two of the same darn thing on the same order. THAT was not my intention.

This is what I do, I'll just take it to someone I know can use it!

And my demo used to pick on me because I had a spreadsheetwith all of my SU stuff listed.

My demo gave us a spread sheet to use for card stock. I have never used it though. Usually can remember what I have, but have messed up once or twice (see previous post).

I did this with embrace life. I put it on the top of my list and then again on the bottom and the funny thing is my demo did not notice either. So now she has embrace life also. LOL
Well, I have a couple of duplicates that were deliberate - EK Success punches with the removable corner guides. Since I am incapable of removing those guides without snapping 'em in half, I have a couple of duplicate punches where I knew I wanted to use them both with and without the guides.
Otherwise, it's happened only a time or two. I passed the doubles on to my mother, but one time she already had what I was trying to give her!
Glad to see i'm not the only one......duplicate punches and embossing folders are my bane, but my other stamping friends are the benefactors, so it's all good.....
For me, I think it's like the washing machine 'eating' the other sock! I know I had a stamp because I had samples of the image to use on a card front but when I needed it again it was nowhere to be found.
Went to a Christmas party at a LSS, bought a sentiment stamp that I thought I had been looking for. Got home and found I had this particular sentiment. Maybe I thought it looked different at the store - at leaset it is a different font---
Went to a SU workshop today. Asked the Demo which stamp set a particular sentiment was in. Guess what - I already have this set!
Oh well, I least I must like..... Now I have a spare! Sometimes, I buy a duplicate on purpose because I keep a 'workshop kit' that I only open when I go to a workshop but even then...
I'm always telling my cats, "You poor things. You have me to look after you and I have trouble looking after myself!!!"
I have done the opposite -- looked and looked and looked for a stamp set to use for a card and then finally realized that I planned to order it but never had.

I just did the same thing last week. I saw a Christmas card I wanted to case using the SU ornament punch and Delightful Decorations stamp set. I found the punch then searched
and searched for the stamp set, only to remember an hour later I had just ordered it at this monthes club meeting and it hasn't come in yet.
I've done it. I have doubles of some Copics, a border punch, Stickles. And then there are things I've just bought in double on purpose. I like to have extra rulers, scissors, adhesive, work surfaces in case I lose one.
I like the wording of this question - not "Have you ever" but "How often have you"! I'm pretty good with remembering which stamps I have, but have an inventory of inks, refills, markers and cutting dies on my ipad to prod the memory when I'm lucky enough to get to a stamping store.
My mom and I were at a stamp convention in Las Vegas and bought the same stamp from the same store over two different visits one weekend. They gladly allowed us to exchange it.
I even have THREE of the same Tigger stamp.
Since it's two of us sharing one stamping room - duplicates are common. (Great minds think alike.) We usually give dups as gifts to other stamping friends (especially newbies - maybe even with a sample card).
I'm guilty. Just goes to show that I REALLY REALLY like whatever it is that I've bought in multiples. Of course, my sister always benefits as I pass them on to her (like the Animals cartridge I just got from Cricut :-) ) I've done it with lots of things - punches, stamps (individual and sets), and now cartridges - that's bad. I do keep an inventory of my stamps and bigger items but it's gotten far to large to carry around. For SU - I highlight what I have in my catalogs as well as have an inventory on the computer. For non-SU - I stamp the image in a book, separated by category; with each numbered in the inventory in case I'm looking for something specific. Alas, it doesn't always prevent me from buying it again, but I'm much better at not doing so these days.
Most recently I just purchased the Happy Trails design card for my Slice..twice...I am going to gift it to my sweet stamping friend who is getting my original Slice as a Christmas gift.
blessings.
I had to laugh when a friend called to say she uncovered duplicate Cuttlebug embossing folders - both still in the 'store bought' condition. I am buying one of them from her. I told her about this thread and we both admitted to re-buying items.
Surprisingly, I've only done this a couple of times. I have notes on my phone as to ink colors I have, and refills I have. I also mark up my SU catalog with a highlighter to identify the things I already have. When I have done it, the duplicate usually makes for a nice gift to a friend or my daughter gets it for her stash. She's quite a cute little crafter herself.
Now I have done this a lot with groceries. I forget the shopping list at home all the time and end up with a "backup". LOL
I keep a binder with samples of EVERYTHING: markers, pens, ink pads, stamps, punches, decorative scissors, nesties, stencils, embossing powders, cricut cartridges, dies, embossing folders...well, ok, everything except paper, but I do have a sample ring of all my CTMH cardstock. I never get two of anything by accident.
Besides the sample binder (which I always take shopping with me), I have a inventory spreadsheet for my CTMH purchases. That has a listing of every paper pack, stamp, etc. I also go through every catalogue (I keep all my past ones, too) and highlight any new purchase. For me, updating these methods of inventory control is part of the fun of a new purchase and the phrase obsessive compulsive rarely comes up. ;)
That having been said, I do have duplicate stamps. I'm a CTMH fan and sometimes I've qualified for more than one free Stamp of the Month or bought multiples of a kit that has a stamp in it. I've also bought grab bags at greatly discounted prices and they usually have at least one stamp set that I already have. I figure someday I'll sell, swap or giveaway the spares.
Last year, I bought 2 Holly Ribbons embossing folders within 2 weeks of each other - did I feel dumb or what?!! I guess because it was so close to Christmas, and I hadn't used the first one yet - so didn't remember buying it . I remembered "thinking" that I would love to get that folder, but not actually doing the purchasing! I also bought 2 Arch Lattice edge punches, and 2 of a particular Christmas stamp. I feel so relieved that I am not alone....... This year I am asking Santa for a new memory stick for my poor old brain.....
I'm glad to know other people are doing the same with buying doubles. I need to keep track of what I have a little bit better. I just give the doubles to my great niece. She's turning into a good little stamper.

I have done a lot of doubles, sizzix dies, a few stamps, punches, audio books, a few movies, etc. I now have list for audio books, movies, sizzix, stamps (by alpha, subject, company & holiday), dies, tools, punches, etc. I take a 3 ring binder with me when I go to craft fairs to help prevent doubles and to the bookstore! That is the list goes with me when I remember to take the list.
Oh yes- I often did this. Now I have the same system as dogzruleca- I bought a binder that I stamped all my stamp images into, listed all my stamp pads, inks, made glitter colour swatches, ribbon swatches, punches & embossing folder /brass stencil swatches etc. Took some time, but mainly I just made two whenever I used something.Anything I duped in the past, I passed on to my DIL.
