I was just wondering if anyone else on here sells homemade cards and how much they sell them for. I never have really thought about it - I just love making them. But after making invitations for my Dad's surprise birthday party I had a lot of people asking me if I sold cards that I made and asked how much they could buy them for. I'm just curious what other people are selling for and how it works out for them -- might be something I can enjoy and make some extra money on

Depends on what goes into it. I try to think about how many cards I could make with one package of cardstock, one spool of ribbon, adhesives and embellishments. If you sold 10 cards for 2.00 each you have enough for 1 pkg of stock, spool of ribbon, snail refill and maybe a container of brads or eyelets. Now add your time, stamps, ink and packaging. I don't think 2.50 is asking too much, maybe even 3.00--any more than that and you're chasing non-crafters into Carlton Cards.
I sell them between $2-3 depending on the complexity. I also will buy a few store cards to see how much they are charging. I have been able to charge this for people that ask me to make them cards but not selling them at craft fairs. I have never had any luck at fairs.
There have been many, many past threads on pricing our handmade items for sale -- a search will probably bring up at least a few pages of results!
It really depends a lot on where you are located. A card can sell for $4 or more in one town, while someone in another town would be lucky to get $2 for a similarly complex one.

A friend has developed quite a business with her cards. They start at 2.25 and progress up. She has created a notebook containing her selection with order forms in the front. She takes orders and you can request color changes. She has a color chart in the back of the notebook. She also does home shows and offers free cards to the hostess based on sales. Hope this helps.
What great advice! I am planning to make some invites to a baby shower that I am going to help host soon and was wondering what to say if someone asked! *hoping that someone asks*
I'm currently making 20 baby shower cards, and I was thinking of charging $2.00 per card. They have double backgrounds, lots of layers, ribbon, etc, so I'm glad that I seem to be in the ballpark. It's the first time anyone has asked me to make cards for a fee. Thanks for the thread!
Thanks for all the replies - it sounds like everyone has the same idea for prices. I know when I was asked and said $3 off the top of my head I wasn't sure what the reaction would be - but they thought it was perfect..... So yay!!
Marianne - I was thinking about checking out our local farmer's market and possibly selling there - you said that is what you have been doing for several years -- does it usually work out well for you. I would love to hear your ideas and how you have made it work for you! Thanks so much to everyone for sharing.... I LOVE these forums!!

I sell my cards for $3.00. I also made Graduation invitations for someone. I had to make 100. She paid for all the supplies and gave me some extra mney for my time.
I usually charge $2.50 per card. That being said, a lot of them are sold to my SIL's sister who lives in downtown Chicago and she told me I should sell them for that much. Now, I just made First Communion announcements for my daughter and showed another mom and she ordered 8 of the same. So, all I had to change was the typed info on the inside that I added with another piece of CS anyway. And for what she paid me I was able to replenish my stash of double sided paper from SU!

I made my SIL's baby announcements. I had her pay for the cardstock, vellum, ribbon, and eyelets and basically my time was a donation (but that was for family). I'm trying to sell cards at a local pizza place and have a $2.50 price on them (or 5/$10) but haven't sold a single one. I may have to reduce the price and try again. I had made mini milk cartons of "bunny poop" for Easter for my coworkers and had two extras so put them out on the counter to sell. I put $2.00 on them but the woman said if they were $2 then she'd only buy one. So I sold both for $2. This is just a very poor area (I flopped as a consultant because of that). I'm sure in other areas these would sell.
I just saw printed cards in Target with a handstamped look priced at $5 each! I think $2 is usually the going rate, but some areas can ask for more, especially for more involved cards.
what if you made hand made matching envelopes to go with your cards? and you're selling them in Conneticut? then how much do you think you should sell them for?
anyone from Conneticuit that would know the going rate for something like that?
thanks
Michelle
I'm from CT and do a few local fairs. The cards are not super involved as I always want to make the mailing part of it easy and not add anything that would add to postage and such. I charge 2.50 a card or 6 for 12.00 (A2 card size). I've also just started selling the smaller sets (3.5 x 5) 10 cards for 12.00. I've seen those exact sized card sets at Borders for the same price but my cs and envies are better quality.
If I'm doing large orders over 100, I price differently, even as low at 1.10 a card since I'm buying in quantities and working an assembly line.
I'm in Oregon. I sell mine for $2.50 a card. But.....I only make 8 of a design and never revisit that design. I may use the same layout but different colors or use a different layout. People who come to my October sale know that i only make 8 and that makes them more desirable to them since they know that they are limited editions! :-) Last year I sold over 300 cards.

I'm in NY. I generally sell my cards for $5 each (but rarely revisit the same card twice)... unless I have a order for several of the same.. then I will bring my price down. I did 200 thank yous recently for a customer at $3 each, but I also handwrote each envelope for him.
I've been able to get $3.00 apiece for mine, but would not charge that much if someone asked for multiples of the same card. I did have one person years ago that would pay me $5.00 each, but she was a psychologist and had the $$!
