Can you ever have too many???
I think not........but I only have 18 and working my way up. They just give the cards just a little something extra. BG on everything is my new motto!
Oh my! This question just made me realize that I not only have an addiction to stamping/stamps, but a huge one to backgrounds alone. .......

And on top of all these stamps, I love creating my own backgrounds (shaving cream, bubbles, etc.)
Whoa!!!... and I thought I had a lot!!! Have you seen an addiction counselor for this?

You are totally wrong.......................I have ticking, Victorian lace, Petite Prints, Chicken wire, Speckles. Then there are the old little ones: Seasonal images, petite patterns, background basics & the border shaped one Fun fillers. All are old. I'm ordering my first new one. Should have it next tuesday.
I have SU stamps that I couldn't get rid of. In fact, most are SU. they are the ones I use all the time. I just wish they'd come up with better Christmas images. JMO

About any stamp can be a "background stamp", not to mention rollagraphs -which are good for odd sized or large sheets of paper, versamarking/watermarking, and the sea of texture and pattern stamps that are small but can be repeated.
I'm sure this survey is referring to SU! stamps that are in the catalog under the category of background stamps. And I've got a bunch. But I'm just say'n that most of the stamps you own make dandy background stamps.
I am really starting to love background stamps and seem to want more and more of them. I'm also finding myself ordering more SU jumbo wheels as they make great backgrounds also!
I just started using backgrounds late last spring so I only have 3 big SU, 1 little SU set, and 1 big non-SU. I have used some packing material and other weird things for abn aged or rough look. I am planning to order 2 bgs this month and 2 next month though. I really love them!
Do you count the small background sets, like Itty Bitty Backgrounds?
I'm at work right now but I can make an educated guess of about 9 SU and 1 non-SU big backgrounds. But I still use my small sets...all 5 of the sets, which will make for 20 more different kinds of BG designs.
I, too, am going to be adding several big ones this year!
I have: 10 almost 11
Antique, Bamboo II, By Definition, Canvas, Dots & Daisies, French Script, On Safari, Print Pattern, Soft Swirls, Weathered and the new paisley is "out for delivery" as we speak- woohoo!
I just realised that most of my backgrounds are retired- :( better get crackin' on the newer ones eh?!
I have 5 but only use 2 on a regular basis. I find it hard to ink them and stamp them properly. I tend to get inkpad lines however smoothly I ink up the stamp. I have tried them upside down and the right way up. I also find it hard to remove the stamp when I am stamping on a cardfront, the cardfront gets stuck to the stamp.
I am going to use smaller stamps instead (like the fillers) to create backgrounds as I find it easier to random stamp those to create a background instead.
I have 13 SU backgrounds and 4 non-SU backgrounds. What I like about the SU bg stamps is that you can cover an entire 4.25 x 5.5 piece of cs with them. The others are slightly smaller.
