Default How long to make a card?

How long does it take you to make a card? I feel like it's taking me way too long to put something together. Last night I made three cards -- a Thank You card and 2 Hanukkah cards -- and it took about an hour apiece! And they're not so difficult! I was sitting at the table past midnight!

OK, when I look at them this morning they're really pretty, but am I just slow, or does it take other people this long to figure out the design and what papers to use etc?

just wonderin' ...

When there is a deadline (like the postman's arrival), it takes me three hours. I'm a slow worker. A lot of it is that I change my mind a lot and have to start over several times before I actually start panicking and stick with one design. More normally, I would take a whole day to make a card... but with time in between - a meal here and there, an email break, a nap, etc.

Even when I am casing a card, it is the same thing (three hours to a day). I "agonize" (it is a happy agony) over what little things to change, etc. etc.

I was thinking the exact same thing last night.

I worked on cards from about 8am until 11pm with one hour break and only have 6 cards to show for it. Plus, they're 2 each of three designs -- not even all 'originals'!

Could it be that I spend so much time referring back to SCS for additional ideas? ;)

It's almost worse when I have a list and know who I'm making a card for. Then I want it to be extra-special and there goes the hours ... For example, the thank you card will be for my brother and SIL for hosting me thanksgiving weekend. So I sit there and gaze off into space thinking what kind of colors she likes, and what sort of design, and all that jazz.

If I couldn't CASE sometimes, I'd be a wreck trying to figure out what to design. Love this site!

It depends on how intricate the card is. But I would say an hour is not that uncommom for me.

For me it really depends on the day and how well those creative juices are flowing. I have spent the better part of 3 hours on a card and it looked awful. Other times I have pumped out several in an hour and they look great! It's hard to tell.

On average 45 mins to an hour I only have an hour max in the morning to spend on a card so it has to fit into that slot.

It probably takes me 2-3 hour for a new design. Then after I have it all figured out, I can recreate the same one at the rate of several per hour.

It's just doing the originals all the time that takes so much time to get it just right.

I am so glad to know i am not the only one who takes an hour or more to make a card. I have a friend who churns cards out like one every ten minutes. I don't know how she does it. I can barely put the Lisa B card kits together that fast.

I'm really glad to know it takes other people a long time too! I don't feel so lonely! It generally takes me 3-4 hours to do an "orginial" card. If I spent time casing some ideas, that's not included in the 3-4 hours!

I feel like people I give cards to would think I was really stupid if they had a clue how much time and effort it took from me....but I do really enjoy making them....so I keep going!

Whew! I thought I was the world's slowest stamper, but now I see that I am in good company. Depending on the day and the creative mojo, it will often take me from 1-3 hours to do an original card from start to finish. I don't CASE often, usually just use cards for inspiration. Those cards take just as long! I think my brain goes off into a time warp somewhere.

If my cats help me make the cards, add another 25% to the time it takes to make one.

OK, so . . . my cards literally take days!! LOL Why does it take that long? Usually because while I'm in the middle of designing, I get stuck about what to do next and so I come here looking for ideas. I start out on the right track then find interesting links along the way and usually end up finding something else completely different that I just HAVE TO MAKE RIGHT NOW!

Next thing I know, it's 2 days later and I finally remember I was supposed to make a card! LOL

It is not uncommon to devote 2+ hours to developing an original design.

If I'm copying another design, mebbe 10 or 15 minutes, depending on the intricacy/techniques used.

I say anywhere from 15 minutes to a hour. Depends on how much cutting, and embellishing I do. I made 4 gift card holders today in around a hour and 15 minutes. But the tags for them were already made(my goodies from a swap). I take my time. I use to hurry, but now it is quality over quanity.

If you are looking for speed, you have to have a card idea that you would like to duplicate the layout. Stamps, colors, etc can be different than your sample. It just seems to get the creative juices flowing fast when you have a semi-plan to begin with. Thought this might help you to pick up speed if all you have is a short time slot.

I'm with Julie here, for a new design, anywhere of upwards of an hour (that's if I already have an idea) I guess you can't could the time I spend looking for inspiration (cause I do that all the time!)

I can bang off cards pretty quick for mass production of a simple card and design, but I have WAY more fun doing the actual DESIGNING!

It depends - sometimes I whip one out in no time - say 15 minutes then there are those times that 3 hours later I am still ripping it apart because I am just not happy with it.
I will leave it for a bit and go back say the next day and suddenly it all comes together.

It honestly depends. My cards generally 30-45 minutes a piece. It depends on what I'm doing and when I start timing myself. Sometimes I start after I choose my colors, others I check the time as I head downstairs and then again when I leave my stamping room (I really need a clock in there.)

There are times when cards take me under 30 minutes, but they aren't my best work.

Until I saw this thread, I didn't realize that I was a relatively fast cardmaker!

OMG, I feel SO much better now. I'm not some kind of designing loser. Whew. Maybe if I had some Clapton or Santana on the CD player the rockin' beat would make me go faster... ;)

Once I come up with a card which sometimes takes me forever, I always try to make at least 6 of the same one right after I complete the first one. That way I feel like I really accomplished something!

Sometimes I can make one quickly (an hour or so is quick for me), but then I look at it and say... "Blah..." SO, I take it apart (don't want to waste!) and try to recreate using the "good parts". This can take me a couple days!!! But then I am HAPPY with the result. If it is for someone else, I then have to duplicate it, so I have a record of what I did. I can usually copy a card pretty quickly, 15 minutes or so...
