ALSO, if anyone uses PUNCHES a lot, GRAB your scraps and a hand full of punches then start a movie! Use your scraps to punch out shapes and store them in tackle boxes. This uses up your scraps AND gives you a head start on embellishments ready for cards or scrapbook pages.

I have a basket that sits on my workbench. I just cleaned it out last month. It works very well. One of my girlfriends from work had a Home Interiors party and I ended up buying it years ago. It was like $40.00 but, it was the only thing I thought I would use outta the catalog....

I keep patterned scraps in one drawer (I have the Rubbermaid drawers, set of 3, about 12x12) and plain scraps in another door. When they get filled, I go through and get rid of the less practical scraps.

When I make cards, my scrap drawers are the first places I go.

This is how I store mine and I have saved SO MUCH cardstock by organizing the scraps!
I keep the reds/pinks/purples/oranges in the first drawer, blues/greens in the second drawer, and neutrals in the bottom drawer!

Okay, I'm not as fancy as you guys, it would seem. I simply keep them in a medium size plastic tote next to the desk. When I need something, I look through it and pick a color.

My idea is someday hubby will make me a frame and I will make my own paper from the small little bitty pieces.

I like that idea, I'm now using vanilla files which are over filled, I do have some 12x12 protectors that I don't use, Now i have a reason to use them, good idea. thanks

I use basic 8.5x11 page protectors (the kind for putting in 3 ring binders) separated by color - I use actual color since most of my scraps are SU. That works great from some of my cardstock, but since I have a lot of printed paper, I have some 12x12 protectors but haven't figured out a good organizational scheme. I have my SU pages in a couple folders and all my random other paper in a big pizza box. Though this forum is great for coming up with new ideas.

This is similar to what I do... I have a medium sized plastic box that I just toss them into. It sits right under my work table, by my feet. When I need something, I just reach down, grab it, and take what I need. It's inexpensive and works well for me!

I've tried a drawer...to messy and everything gets crumpled. I've tried a regular expandable folder...too small. Not sure if I want to invest in hanging files...although I may have some lying around. I've tried putting them in a binder with toploading see thru sleeves, but there are too many and the book is too heavy. What do you do to organize your scraps by color/theme, etc...? I'm curious. Maybe someone will come up with something better! Thanks!
chandapie, just wanted to thank you for this thread! You motivated me to organize all mine and I completed it last night. I don't have a huge stash but I have colored CS in page protectors in a notebook and my DP in now by color families in individual 12x12 paper organizers! My work space is so much cleaner now! Thanks!

Red face Organizing Scraps

Hi all, Like some of you I just place my scraps of paper back in with their color file. If they are little scraps I have a ziplock baggie in each folder and place them in there. This way all my colors are stored together and I can choose which size of scrap I need. I tried the one scrap box or file drawer and then one card stock drawer; I also tried the large ziplock bag but found that when I needed a piece I didn't like the digging. I just wanted to share, and wish you the best of luck with the organizing. I am not in a room right now, I have all my stuff in my bedroom, because we are remodeling. It takes forever to find stuff to make a card.

Actually I keep my scraps (all sizes) in one box (flat). It gives me pleasure to go through it looking for the right color and size to grab my brain to go with a design.....I come up with some pretty interesting things and I find my imagination works better just letting the colors and sizes "speak" to me.

This is exactly what I do, and it works great! I love seeing everything organized by color, and I love that I can pull the drawer out and sift through it when I need to. I only dump mine about once a year, though. I need to do it more often! I actually haven't needed to use a full sheet of paper except for Christmas cards since early last year! True, my cards are all using slightly mismatched ancient scraps, but hey - I tell myself I'm going green!

I sort my scraps first of all by size. Anything 12" long goes into my largest drawer in my storage cabinet, the only that will take 12".
Smaller pieces but still over 5 or 6" all around, or long strips, go into a slightly smaller drawer. I try to use these for card fronts often.
My smaller bits I sort by colours and place in baggies (all yellows, oranges, reds, purple, blue, dark neutrals, light neutrals, metallics, whites, and one for designs. The baggies all go into my smaller drawer. When I'm working, I will sometimes be cutting down sheets. I just drop the remains in the drawer. Periodically I go through it and sort things into their proper category. Since I started doing this, I don't wind up cutting into a new sheet near as often- I check my baggie first to see if I already have something in the size/colour needed.

Last night I spent going through my plastic bin of scrap paper. I have used the hanging files and it didn't work for me. The plastic bin works for a while and then I get lazy and don't keep it sorted...so every year I just go through and re-organize and throw away all of those little pieces that I really shouldn't have kept to begin with. I always go to my scrap bin first.

Well, hallelujah! I just completed a swap and almost every card has some sort of scrap from my scrap pile! It really can be done, LOL! I just have to keep in mind to check the file before I grab a new piece of paper!
