Hello Everyone
I would love to make some of the fruit cup cans for friends at Christmas. I don't know what kind of glue to use to reattach the bottom. Will hot glue hold it? Also what kind of cans do you recommend? I got some of the Campbell soup cans with the pull-tab but I couldn't get the can opener to work on the bottom. I could use any advice you are willing to give.
Thanks
Pam
I've got the kind of can opener that lift off with out the sharp edges. I haven't thought of useing the Crystal Effects.
please keep the hints coming.
Thanks
The little mini cups of fruit, like peaches, in a can are great little surprises. I also like using the big cans from pineapple. Basically you take the bottoms of the cans off using a can opener that doesn't leave sharp edges (pampered chef) then stuff the can with a little gift (from the bottom) then reseal the can secretly. It's so fun to see someone opening the can and wondering how in the world you did that! I too use crystal effects to run along the bottom and reseal the can. Here are some thumbnails:

Please help...
Looks like a cute idea, but how do you "secretly seal" the bottom of the can? Like with cs or cardboard? And use CE around the metal to adhere the cardstock to? Would really like to know...

Thank you sooo much for explaining that. I've been wondering why people were decorating fruit cans! LOL!
Also, the can bottoms have to have a sort of lip or a rim. They can not have the rounded edges. If the can does not have the lip or rim the can opener will not work. Hope this makes sense.
You also have to put some sort of weight on top of the can once you have reattached the bottom until the adhesive (CE) dries. The wight on top really ensures the bottom is securely fastened.

Pam, sounds like you have the right kind of can opener, but the wrong kind of can! I suppose you could try opening the pull-tab soup cans from the top, but the whole lid might come off when the recipient goes to pull the tab!
Also, I would recommend turning the can upside down after you weigh it down so any excess adhesive that gets squeezed out won't glue your can to the table! Fortunately this hasn't happened to me, but I can totally see it!

I use "Plaid-Royal Coat Dimensional Magic" to seal the bottom of the can. It is like crystal effects and works wonderfully. My husband also has a big vise (SP?) in the garage (the one that you can tighten with a big crank handle) that I put the can in after I glue it to hold it tight together while it is drying. I have sometimes used the larger cans too, depending on what I want to put inside. These are so fun and people think you're just the greatest for coming up with such a cleaver idea!!! Beware, they are addictive!!
I didn't have any CE, so I just used a thin line of good ole' Elmer's glue then stacked some books on top for a day...worked great. Even with my little critters repeatedly shaking it to "hear the mm's" before I gave them to their swim coaches. Good luck..they are very fun. Be prepared to hear lots of compliments
I haven't tried it, but I heard that some dog food cans come with the "regular" can bottom and a pull tab top, if you want a larger size can. Just don't tell the recipient where you got the cans, especially if they're filled with candy! LOL
I made a bunch of fruit cans one this summer, though, and I was surprised by just how much candy they held, so maybe the smaller ones will work for you.
