Default Helping out during corona with cards

I am starting to see more requests for cards for seniors and nursing homes during this time...

Ellen Hutson put out a call:

Encouraging Cards for Seniors – Ellen Hutson

awwww,,,the 100 yo in her hat on her birthday....(it also speaks to the germ on cards issue)

Coronavirus social distancing isolates seniors, but cards can help

Kids are in on it...

Siblings send handmade cards to nursing home residents during coronavirus quarantines | GMA

Writing cards to nursing homes, others in isolation can help

This is right up our alley folks....give it a thought.

My mom is “locked” in a residential living center. Yes, please, I echo your request. Please send cards to your local care facility. My mom is lonely and so are all her friends. I wish I could go and hug all of them. The staff is protecting them with like crazy.

My 100 year old MIL is in a retirement residence that is in lockdown. They have also suspended mail delivery to the building making it impossible to get cards to the residents. :-(

I'm so sorry to hear that they aren't even getting mail!! I guess I understand the thinking on this, but is it absolutely necessary to cut the residents off from everything? It seems there could be a better way.

All they need to do is let it sit for 24 hrs.

Ridiculous....they've already said that it is almost impossible to get infected by the mail. The only way is if the mail carrier is infected and coughs all over the mail! That's pretty unlikely. What's more likely is that the care home residents will have a steep decline in mental and emotional health.

In the U.S. they have mostly said it is unlikely, not almost impossible. A delivery person could cough or sneeze or even exhale - because asymptomatic people can be sick and more easily transmit the virus than was once thought. So the virus could be on packages or mail. Then we pick it up, touch our face...

But since the virus lasts just 24 hours on cardboard, setting mail aside for that long would make it completely safe. How terrible and unnecessary that the mail wouldn’t be given to the residents. Someone needs to get a health professional to call them, or to email the director and/or owner articles explaining.

I think that is over the top. Now, more than ever, being able to have contact with the outside world is so important. I understand why they are in lockdown, as I work in nursing homes as a medical assistant to a doctor, but no mail is too much. The resident's mental health can decline and then their physical health as well. We need to protect the most vulnerable from the virus, but we have to protect the mental well-being of the residents as well. Getting cards from the outside can do so much to lift people's spirits. I hope they reconsider their position.
