Hi Girls. Please help me.
I am coming from Australia to San Francisco (Union Square), and I am also going to Las Vegas.
Where can I shop? I've heard all about Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Costco Etc. Are there any of those stores where I will be? What other stamps stores are close by?
I am also looking for a grocery store to stock up on my favorite foods that I can't get here in Australia
Love to hear from you soon. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi Michelle! Have a lovely trip! I do not live in the US but have been to SFO and have not seen any craft stores in the city itself and my brother had to drive me outside the city for craft stores, Michael's, Joann and Walmart.
Look for Pebbles in My Pocket, and Majestic Memories Scrapbooking stores. They're both great and have amazing customer service. What kind of food are you looking for? What kind of scrapbooking supplies?
try www.scrapbooking.com
they list stores by state. of course call to see if they are still in business. and for their hours.
check the phone book wheh you are in the hotel.
as for the hotel-they maybe of help. ask at the front desk
to the best of my knowledge there are no scrapbooking stores in SF :o(
however, if you are willing to take a short drive over to Berkeley ( about 20 min East of SF) you will find Scrapbook Territory. THe store is HUGE has 100's of different patterned papers, 100's of unique stamps you will not find elsewhere (seriously) and of course the entire line of Technique Tuesday Stamps as well as others, the entire Tim Holtz line and all sorts of doodads that are so much fun to play with. I love the store, beware they are closed on Mondays. The shops all along the quaint street are eclectic with unique shops and wonderful eateries.
hth and have fun fun fun!
There is Dick Blick & Flax Art & Design in the City. I, too, Love Scrapbook Territory in Berkeley so if you have a chance to head there I would.
As far as grocery stores...For the higher end stores there is Whole Foods, Mollie Stones and Andronicos & Trader Joes. For regular grocery stores there is Safeway and Luckys.
Historically there really hasn't been any scrapbook stores right in SF. Not sure why, but probably because rent is so high. However, there is a small one that opened recently in the Northwest corner of the City called Cherish. If you have a car, going to the East Bay to Scrapbook Territory is a good one. There is also another one south of the City in San Bruno called The Scrapbook Nook.
As far as shopping, there is a Costco right in the city, but no Michaels (plenty in the bay area though). Also no Hobby Lobby out here but there is a Joann in Colma.
I must agree with the poster above that said Scrapbook Territory in Berkeley is about the best we've got here in the bay area. Heck, I'm going there on Friday. However, if you go to Japantown in the city, you can buy Copic markers at the Mai-Do store...but not at the one where the Nordstroms is...weird that they don't carry the same thing...but whatever. hehe
Have fun shopping! And for Michael's and JoAnn's stores, just google their website and there is a store locator where you can find the closest one.
If you're not driving, you can also take BART (kind of like a clean subway) into Berkeley and see all the cute shops there. If you like chocolate don't miss See's Candy on Powell St. in Union Square, the best chocolate in the WORLD! Be sure and ask for a sample

Chocolate... This is definitely one place I am going to be stopping. THANKS
If you decide to visit Viva Las Vegas, Please go ONLY DURING the day light hours and DO NOT go alone. It is in one of the worst crime areas in Vegas and very unsafe. I live here and I avoid that area like the plague. Also note: if you have any pet allergies, they have pets that roam freely about the store. Blessings.
Please do NOT go to Majestic Memories in Las Vegas. My Mom and I went in there and had nothing but HORRIBLE customer service.
Depending on where you are staying, there are two fabulous LSS. Julie Jane Paper Co. (http://www.jjpaperco.com/) and Scrappin' Time (http://scrappin-time.com/), the latter of which is the "super store". Depending on what items you're interested in, I can further direct you, or just take a look around their website. =)
Oh I totally forgot about Julie Jane ...it is a very nice little local store. It is a bit pricey but these days...it is to be expected and with so many of these little stores surviving.....it is probably not that out of line. It is just down the street from where I work so I think a visit over lunch is in order....lol Gotta help the local economy after all...Blessings
There aren't any rubber stamp stores in San Francisco, itself. There is an awesome store in Berkeley called Scrapbook Territory. In Danville (you have to drive over there, though), there's the Stamper's Warehouse. In Sunnyvale (drive down 101 South towards San Jose), there's the Cranberry Hill Mercantile (which, in my opinion, is one of THE BEST rubber stamp stores ever).
In Las Vegas, I second, third, and fourth Viva Las Vegas.
Lucky gal! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes! I went there a couple of years ago but I didn't find any stores myself but then you have to stay longer than a weekend to see everything.
Can you get a city pass.... I'm not sure of the exact name..... expedia.ca I think is where we got ours. It was about $50 for a pass book of places to see, discount admissions to sights etc plus Free rides on the cable cars! It was a good deal!
I might suggest you travel down to China town.... You'll be close by.... by cable car..... up hill is hard on the lungs! The crafty things and stuff is at the beginning of the street ( Gate) and the food stuffs were located towards the end of the Chinatown . You might also look in Japan town area for stuff but not rubber stamps..... more like paper stuff.
Oh, there is one store there.... in the area .... what was it called.... It's like a Dollar store... but it's a store where everything costs $2. Starts with a D...... Yes, that's a good place to go for some more stuff.... In Vancouver they have one where I got packs of origami paper for $2, calligraphy pens, $2 and small stuff ,some embellishment stuff too. Some art supplies, stationary, household items and such. HTH! I 'll have to ask for the name of that store for you!
If you're coming to San Francisco via SFO or Oakland Airports, I highly recommend you take BART into the City. Renting a car only to leave it in the hotel garage is too expensive;per diem, it will cost you about $35 and up. It's also a headache to find parking or spend more money parking in another garage. Money spent on a rental car is best saved for supplies! In general, I recommend taking public transportation.
With the exception of Cherish, as mentioned in a previous post, there are no scrapbook stores in the City. If you'd like to go to The Scrapbook Nook, Joann's, or Beverly's (another craft store), they're easily accessible via BART and the SamTrans bus lines.
As far as groceries, there are a couple of places you can go. Since you'll be in Union Square, the only grocery stores I can think of are Safeway and Whole Foods. Whole Foods is walking distance. On Tuedays, at the Ferry Building, from 10AM to 2PM is the Farmer's Market.
There is so much to do and see in San Francisco. There's Chinatown, Pier 39, the Wharf, Ghirardelli Square; there's a ferry to Alcatraz and you can take a tour too. There's also the Museum of Modern Art. Just to name a few....
Viva Las Vegas (stampo.com) is a wall to wall packed rubber stamp store. I agree, it's in a run down area in the outskirts of Vegas but I think it's worth checking out. They have some very unique stamps & they also sell naked rubber stamps in a huge bin by weight. They also had gently used stamps at a discount too. Anyway, go during the day, not alone. Have a safe & fun trip!!! Hope you hit a mega jackpot.. or two!!
oh, there's a famous grocery/snacks food chain named Trader Joe's (Traderjoes.com) that I love! They're here in California & Nevada too. Yummy & affordable snacks & other food items..most is in their private label.
All you girls have been absolutely fabulous with the comments and great information. I have notes a mile long. Thanks for the tips about Viva las Vegas, and going in the daytime, Much appreciate that one. I keep checking back each day.
Thanks again.
For chocolate, See's Candy's as someone already said, or Ghiradelli Square for luscious chocolate! Also, try Boudin's Bakery for yummy breads. They make a great chowder that comes in a bread bowl.
Regarding the Asian dollar store in Japantown, it's called Ichiban Kan. There is a similiar but much larger store in Daly City (Serramonte Shopping Center) called Daiso. Lots of fun stuff there!
Thanks girls!! I go to Vegas at least once a year with my hubby and I can't believe I have never heard of Viva Las Vegas Stamps until now. We are going in March and I will be stopping by here for sure!!!! Looks like the shelves are packed with rubber! Whoo Hoo!!!

We're not really on the outskirts as we're only one mile east of the Strip and I've not seen any crime here... we're only open 10 a - 4 p so there's no point in coming at night anyway... not that there'd be a problem... we're close to Nevada's largest mall... feel safe in leaving your machine gun at home. It's true that cats run loose and think they own the place but the dogs and I are behind a caged in area and we don't bite... we do have the largest number of rubber stamps of any store in the world and we also carry Miracle Tape and a whole slew of other supplies... there used to be six stamp stores in Las Vegas and now there's just us... try it, you'll like it!:-D
Mark Twain said "The coldest winter I've ever spent was a summer in San Francisco!" I went there in July and had to go to Macy's and buy a sweater... mornings are especially foggy and cold.

I'll keep posting as I think of things...
Oh, Thanks Ckstamps! I couldn't remember the name of that store let alone spell it! My friend didn't get back to me... maybe she went some where warmer for awhile! I'm going to have to take notes for my next trip down south!
I didn't know there was a store close by downtown- so next time I'll go to the Ichiban Kan. We went to the Ghiradelli Square for a ice cream sundaes..... Not recommended right after eating a meal!;) Maybe as an afternoon snack! yes, another neat place was the Boudin Bakery..... you can stand outside the window and watch the bread come out of the oven and slowly make it's way down to the front area in baskets on an assembly line! Pretty neat my kids thought. Then you have to go upstairs for the tour and samples....
There's also that old amusement museum of mechanical games and arcades and such by the wharf...... that was very interesting I found as well. They have an aquarium too.
Dear Happy How long are you staying there? HAPPY TRAVELS!
Is it really cold in SF now...I visited last year about this time and froze me buns off...I was not prepared...it was cold!
Yep. Last week we were having a warm spell, but it's gotten back to our usual averages at this time of year (in the 50's daytime) but at night it's been COLD! down to the 40's. I always recommend a jacket and/or to dress in layers no matter what time of year you come to SF. Temperatures can fluctuate up to 50 degrees within the bay area in the summertime, so if it's warm/hot inland it can be pretty cold in SF proper, due to the fog that rolls in in the afternoons. Even within SF, it can be fairly warm during the daytime, then cools down in a major way towards evening/night.
