To tear cardstock hold it between your thumb and fore finger and use your other hand to tear the cs down and towards you and use your thumb on the hand holding the cs to sort of guide it. Don't just rip into it You need a "controlled" tear or it will usually look a mess.
To distress I use sandpaper over white core cs or you can also lightly crumple cs and rub an ink pad over it or run the edge of an ink pad along the side of your cs.
Hope this makes sense, it's kind of hard to describe

Sponging is my favourite way to distress. I start the sponge about 2 inches away from the edge of the cardstock, so when the sponge actually gets to the cardstock, the colour has become softer and more diffused. Sometimes when I forget or get impatient and start the sponge closer to the paper, I get harsher streaks of colour.

I like to distress using the distressing tool in the cutter kit. It makes it so easy.

I personally love the Tim Holtz Distressed Inks and once you start working with them you find new ways to use them. But, if you don't have those...tearing the paper (go slow), use water to wear down the paper, sandpaper, crumple the paper and apply ink to the creases use water to fade it out are all ways to distress and you can do more than one method on the same piece.

The best advice is play and see what gets you the results you like.

To curl torn edges use water-only a little-and roll the edge. I have a stiletto for quilting but a big needle works too. Distressed inks look much better when used with water; wrinkling and ironing is one of my favs.

Use a coarser grit of sandpaper rather than a finer grit. I went out and bought a super-fine (~200 grit) sanding sponge and not only do I have to sand my paper forever to get through the top layer of colour, but I can't selectively sand the high points on textured or crumpled cardstock very well.
