figured out how much this hobby has cost them. I did the math oh my. I added up all money from the time I got hooked to present... I have spent so much money . My cards I sent have cost me an average of 30.00 each over the last 5 years... Whew. That is some expensive cards I have mailed out. Wonder if I will ever get the cost down to about 5.00 a card? I could make hundreds of cards for all the supplies I own. What a insane sickness. I really need to quit spending and start stamping.Yikes
How funny! Look at it this way. It is great therapy and so much cheaper than actually going to a therapist. OR, has anyone added up what our husbands might be spending on their hobbies such as fishing or golfing? It is all relative.
Well..I have been stamping for 7.5 years...the first year I spent $12,000. I had to have all nice matching furniture in my stamp room and then fill it up...lol. I am afraid to keep tract since then..I know I could probably buy car easily with what has been spent..YIKES!

I know how much kindness and joy you spread around, Amber. And that, my dear, is priceless!

From September of 2009 to September 2010 I did the math and spent $1000 just on SU. Then another $1500 between Michaels and ACMoore and all the other craft spots I frequented. I am now a much smarter spender and only get what I need. I have given way too much away already and don't plan to keep that up!
I've been keeping track for several years now. I've been trying to cut back and this year I've spent far less than last year. However, I have never added up all the year totals -- I just don't want to go there -- way TOO scary.
I don't want to know! Besides I agree the enjoyment and relaxation I get from it are priceless. This is my 'thing' and you need something that you do for yourself. The fact that this hobby occassionally benefits others is just a bonus!
Just checked the accounting software and I don't feel so bad now. Only $1700 since July 2009.
I must be Scrooge Mc Duck - although I mostly scrapbook (and haven't had a chance to do that in 7 months) so less stamps which I suspect are the biggest expense.

This is a scary thought to consider. I love making cards so much that I'm not going to even venture a guess. But, I will aim to make/send more so my cost per card goes down. LOL!

I've always laughed about the people who take up card making to save money! Even saying that makes me want to laugh! I always tell everyone who gets a card from me that they're special because every card cost me $300!! They better save that card!! But like someone said, it's cheaper than therapy! It helps you become the creative person you want to be. There are lots of good things about it! You just have to quit keeping track of what it costs!!!
When I started this I was never under any illusion that I would save money making cards.
Rather is the amount of money I spend on this a reasonable percentage of my income for recreation? It is recreation for me and if the people to whom I give the card like them that is a bonus. I enjoy the process of making them
I never travel, eat out or rent videos. I don't even have Cable TV.

Not even gonna think about it - but would never catch up to my dear husband, a model railroader who bought for 20 years and never had a layout until I insisted he either have it professionally built or sell it all. He had it built and I could live to be 500 years old before I could spend what he did!!!

Ditto here to, we don't go on trips, we don't buy alot shoes, clothes, etc. We don't rent videos or go to the movies, don't go out drinking, so this is my way to relax, unwind and is a very nice form of recreation for me too!
Don't tell my husband, but we could easily have a third Harley sitting in the garage. It really would hurt his feelings to only have one and I'd have two. I'll keep on stamping and scrapping for his sake then.
Before I started stamping, I fell into scrapbooking. My boss was leaving for another job and we came up with the idea of making him a scrapbook. I went into a Hobby Lobby without a clue as to what I was doing. The girl there was so helpful and talked on an on about all the stuff she had. I asked her what she thought she'd spent and she said "about $3000". After I picked my jaw up off the floor , I asked her how many scrapbooks she had finished. (I figured it must be a lot) Not even one - they were all in various stages.
That should have been my first clue. But I got hooked and then one day I found a stamp store, and the scrapbooks have gone by the wayside and now I make cards. I don't want to think what I've spent on all the paper, stamps, inks and supplies. But it's sure been fun.
For the last three or four years I've saved all my receipts for crafts during the year and totaled it up at the end. It's just for my own information--I'm curious. I've never thought about coming up with a grand total for all I've ever spent. I joke with my husband about how much money I save by making cards. He laughs--he knows what I spend. But he does tell me, and sometimes others, that some people probably think I'm doing it to save money, and that they don't realize that homemade cards cost as much, or more than, a purchased card. Oh, well, it's a hobby that I enjoy. By the way, I'll never catch up to what my husband has spent on tools and toys!
I enjoy the process of creating greeting cards and giving them to friends and family. I'm not a business so I give to those that ask for a set. That's the enjoyment I get from it all. I don't worry about the monetary issue. I purchase what I want and can afford. I don't go into debt over it though. As others I do do the "extras" some people do, I just stay home.
The pleasure I get from creating and giving the cards is all I'm concerned with.
Yes, I do have to put some kind of monetary value to all my craft tools and supplies, but that's just for insurance purposes.
My mantra. "I don't drink, don't smoke and don't gamble much so why not spend my $$$ on something I enjoy!" I, also, don't borrow to 'feed' my crafting addiction. I make cards and donate them to causes, church, people who request a 'pick-me-up' for someone, etc.
I sew, knit and crochet and donate many of these items. They have gone to 'Quilts for Kids', an Alzeihemer(sp?) study and church bazaar.
I also give items to family and friends.
Doing my hobbies helps me physically and mentally so why not spend my money where I want? I was told once by a quilter - Don't do the math, just enjoy!

I'll take stamping stuff over a car any day!!!
I have spent a LOT. I started stamping around 1995. I have no kids, no pets, and am extremely fortunate to have good health, and a good job. So I have spent massive amounts on stamping stuff!!! I just bought a house, so my spending is on hold for a while.
Once I told my husband, "Well, I don't drink or carouse." and he answered with, "Maybe you should consider it.... it'd be cheaper." Then we had a good laugh, as really he really supports me in my hobby... and he has a few of his own.
