Where will I find glycerin? I looked at Wal-Mart and Walgreen's and neither knew what I was talking about and frankly, I have no idea what it looks like. I didn't find anything like it in the health/beauty sections of either store. One lady tried to sell me laxatives! Haha!

These places probably carry it, but I would recommend asking at the pharmacy and not anyone on the floor. While I'm sure there are some highly competent sales associates, I always seem to get this one: Perhaps this is the one you spoke to as well?
There are glycerin suppositories...I warmed many in my hands for my infant before I listened to my Mom and switched him to from formula to Carnation and Karo...lol
I got the liquid at the drug store, what is now Rite Aid.
It's also used to make homemade soap bubbles.

The lady wasn't far off. In my walmart it's kept in the pharmacy area with all of the laxatives. It comes in a clear bottle with a white label. The bottle is almost round and short. I really had to look at a lot of bottle labels to find it on the shelf.
Okay am I the only person that uses it for icings? Never heard of it as a laxative, but have heard of it's use for cosmetics and soaps.
Try the baking section of your supermarket, or a cake making store.
Okay, I have a dumb question, Other than soapmaking what do you use it for?
There's no such thing as a dumb question...
Glycerin is a key ingredient in homemade stamp cleaners. It is a conditioner to keep the rubber soft and supple. I followed the recipe in this post: Forums at Splitcoaststampers
At my local Target, they keep glycerin behind the counter in the pharmacy. I had to ask for it.
Just ask the pharmacist...they'll know if the store carries it and where it is, if not behind the counter. I got mine earlier in the year at Rite Aid. My Target didn't carry it.
I got mine in the cake decorating section of JoAnn or WalMart (I don't recall), not the pharmacy. So that might be easier to look in rather than asking at the pharmacy. It was only like $2...

I'm going to use it to clean some seriously stained stamps. They were really cheap and I know they'll still stamp stained but I thought I'd try cleaning them. I found a blog online somewhere that said she soaked stained stamps in a mixture of glycerin and Dawn overnight and the stains practically lifted off. So, I thought I'd give it a try. Thanks for the info., I'll try again tomorrow!
My Walmart didn't carry it, so I got mine from the drugstore.
That's interesting that it is used in icing, I never heard of that one, especially since it is used as a laxative. Do you suppose it will carry out all of the calories out with it?
If you have any left after you clean your stamps, it makes fabulous giant soap bubbles--a fun thing to do with kids. Mix it with Dawn and water (or some commercial soap bubble stuff). I put mine in a garbage can lid and make a big bubble wand by rounding out a wire coat hanger and wrapping it with yarn --the yarn helps the stuff adhere better. Just dip the wand, hold it in the air and run. Even adults enjoy this! You can get bubbles up to 4 or 5 feet around.
Glycerin is made from sugar (glucose). Its kind of an oily syrup. You'll find a lot of candy makers and confectioners use glycerin. The chemical composition of glycerin causes it to bind to water molecules, that's why it is used in soaps and cosmetics. Its used as a moisturizing agent (however, it will pull moisture out of your skin, so I find it actually dries out my skin). The fact that it binds to water molecules is why you can get really big bubbles with it because it strenghtens the links and can support larger surface areas. It also had medicinal purposes, like laxitives (the oily nature of it helps things along).
I know - too much info... I'm a science geek - an engineer by trade. Just thought you might be interested...

If it were that easy...I would be putting glycerine on everything I ate. LOL. ;)

Isn't it also used in the recipe to refill your blender pens?
Why yes it is! (don't mind me I am answering my own question Hee hee) And here is the recipe incase anyone else is interested...
Here is Vonda Thomas recipe for refilling blender pens...
You can refill your blender pens too:
2 tsp. glycerin
4 tsp. distilled water
1/4 tsp. rubbing alchohol
Just add it by using a dropper and drip it onto the tip
The first bottle of glycerin I bought at Walgreens and a very pleasant young man had to search all over the store for it. The next Walgreens I tried didn't have it at all. I finally went to a third Walgreens in an older section of town and found it. I bought two bottles of it. Check in the liquid soap section, the hand lotion section and the pharmacy. It comes in a nondescript brown bottle and will probably be on a bottom shelf.
