I give up, tried twice now to restick my Cricut mat. The first attempt with spray adhesive didn't work at all. Took that off and tried the Zig 2-way glue pen that everyone raves about. Seemed to work great, until I used it in the Cricut. The paper stuck really really bad. Completely ripped up the paper. Wasted everything.
I'm done. Gonna stock up on mats when they are on sale. :(
I read somewhere that you could wash them with soapy water to clear off all the paper fibers and then apply Elmer's REPOSOTIONAL glue. I tried it and it works great for me. I have used and reused my mats for a good while now.
The glue is just a regular looking "gluestick".... but the key word is repositional. I find them at Joann's Fabric or one of the office supply stores. They run about $2.99 here in Texas. Good Luck!
Trish, you may have applied too heavy of a coat of the Zig. I did that the first time I used it and thus, feel your pain! I agree with Pavilla, wash with soap and water and scrape the old glue off. Let it dry and then apply a thin coat with your Zig. That should do the trick! Or, just go get a new mat and try those tricks next time!
Here's an instant solution Trish. Joann has the mats on sale right now for $7.79, I think, for two mats. If you need more stuff and have $40 to spend (I don't) you can qualify for free shipping. Code is EADX42. Hope this helps. I hate being frustrated and I feel your pain.
I feel it's not worth the effort of try this and try that. Just break down and purchase new mats. You invested a decent amount of money in the machine and all your cartridges, so why skimp on the consumables that are needed?
Also after each time you remove your cuts from the mat, scrap off ALL the small bits of paper at that time and don't wait till it gets really bad.
These things are craft tools and not toys so you want to take care of them.
Thanks for all the support ladies, I'm not as crabby about it now. :o)
I try to scrape off the paper bits after each use, they don't come off. I use the Cricut spatula, nothing comes off. I use a Pampered Chef plastic scraper, nothing. Would a baby wipe work? But does that take the adhesive off also? I'm talking about the mats with the normal "Cricut" adhesive on it.
You can gently go over your mat with a lint roller. The kind with the sticky paper on it. Just dab at the areas where the paper bits are sticking.
You really shouldn't have that much trouble removing the tiny bits of paper from the sticky mat. Perhaps you might want to change the kind of paper you are using if you find it's leaving that much fiber on your mat.

This is a video that I found, from Pink E and since I always watch her Cricut Card Making video's I am going to try her method. YouTube - Cricut Mat Care
I have used the same mat for 2 years and I use it alot! I use basting spray or repositionable spray from joanns in the quilting dept. Hold about 6" away from mat, spray lightish coat over the whole thing...wait like 25 secs. til dry and use away.
Hope that helps. I also get the 12x24 mats and cut them in half
I use my mats for a while with cardstock until they start to lose their stickiness then clean them with baby wipes which restores them to their former sticky self. As they start to lose some of their adhesion. I then use them on lighter weight designer paper and do the same thing with the baby wipes. Then finally when they have lost a lot of their adhesion I use them for vellum.

I third the baby wipes- love them. I have also used the zig glue pen (very light coat and set out over night). Tried the spray adhesive and just made a mess..
