So, I bought these with my HL coupon last week. And I can't make anything that looks worth a flip! Anybody else got these? HOW DO YOU DO IT????
Seems like a good idea, but it's not happening for me.
ok, I have these. I have played with them a little. You really need to press into the cs, while using a circular & back and forth motion over the plate. (all without making holes, lol) Of course, the pattern will
pop out onto the good side of the cs, so the lines and yucky look you make wont show. ;)
A hint someone shared, which didnt seem to help me, but rub wax paper over the cs first, then use the stylus...suppose to make it glide better?? I didnt think it helped. But, see if it works for you! lol
I have gotten some nice results with these. The effect is a bit more subtle than with regular dry embossing. Here are a few tips:
1. Make sure you rub your cardstock with wax paper before embossing.
2. I have good luck with the Empressor Tool, rather than the traditional stylus or the 3 prong stylus that they sell with the Texture Plates.
3. The back side (the one you are rubbing the tool over) will always look horrible but the embossed side looks nice. It is better to use as a layer than as a piece that you would see the back side of.
Here is my most recent card that I made using the plates. I show them when I teach dry embossing at my Adult Ed. Creative Card Making Class. My students love to use it.
I have these and really like them. when I bought mine I also purchased a little tool that goes with them. the tool is like a little knob that has three stylus' on it. I haven't tried it with a regular stylus. it gets pretty ugly looking on the back but the front always looks great.
I don't think it will work very well if the paper is too thick.
try rubbing the paper with wax paper also.
I have these as well and have difficulty keeping the cs in place. I haven't had a chance to play with them. Maybe if I tape the cs in place. Hmmmm.........
Okay, I'm gonna try again--armed with wax paper, and an empressor, which I hope is what I think it is, cause I already have it. Anybody got a picture of it, so I can be sure?
I find SU cardstock is too high quality (too thick) to use with my embossing templates. This is when your bargains from Michaels, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby come in handy!!!
I won a couple of these with a tool as a doorprize at a scrapbooking convention. I tried it out and wasn't very impressed, but I'll try it again with all the tips shared here. TFS!
I also just read somewhere here how people are using these templates for background stamps! Just brayer over the template with your ink and then CAREFULLY hold the cardstock piece while rubbing with the other hand. Make sure to rub all over the piece. I also tried the hint to put versamark all over the template, then rub the cardstock, then emboss with clear EP.....made kinda neat bubbles...that's the one I tried. I just cleaned with a baby wipe, then water. For the inked one, I just held it under the faucet and the ink washed right off.
HTH for another use.

I have these, I hated them at first, it takes a lot of practice. I found that if you use a small piece of cardstock and use the wax paper first, it makes it easier.
question - I have the plates (12 I think and a nice variety) but they have two holes at the top. Are they supposed to be on some kind of clipboard or something?

I just got mine and tried it today. I had no problems. I have the fat tool that goes with them. I just worked in circles. I used su cardstock. Maybe you need to press down A little harder.

I was wondering about that too Is there supposed to be some type of "holder" that keeps these plates in place like on top of a light box? But that wouldn't work in this case as they are dark plastic.
I hope I am talking about the same texture plates you all are! Anyway, mine have 3 holes at the top of each one.....the holes fit exactly on the pegs of the Fiskars Shapeboss. I have never used them that way, but I suppose that helps keep them in place while you work on the cardstock. Has anyone else fitted the plates to the Shapeboss??

I have used mine with my ShapeBoss...that way you can have textured design on your card - it works better with the larger shapes...you can put a Fiskars template on the shapeboss and do a textured circle or square or star etc. Usually more trouble thank it's worth, IMO. I do use the textured plates on the cheaper M's cardstock though (without using the ShapeBoss). I use my stylus with the plates. Time consuming for sure.
I too have used my ShapeBoss to hold the texture plates in place. I use the plates mainly for layers as they work better on the cheaper cs as mentioned before. I have also used them on heavy weight paper & origami paper with good results. I use both the ShapeBoss stylus & the 3 prong stylus. I think they're fun to play with & enjoy using them. HTH
The Fiskars tool, however, is a piece of crap, IMHO! I use the empressor and it works much better. So does using the wax paper, as described.
Extremely time consuming for large pieces. But SO worth it, in my opinion!
As well, I do prefer to use it on the shapeboss ~ just to hold it steady. I also tape the cardstock down using either temporary adhesive, or masking tape I've "used" on my clothing (to make it not so sticky it will rip the paper when I remove it, but sticky enough to hold it in place).

JoAnn's carries 2 Empressor styles. One has dual tips with a rolling ball movement. The other has 4 tips with spring action or stationary use. Other than the cost & extra tips, I wonder what the difference is & if one would be better than the other for the texture plates. Does anyone know? I have a 50% coupon I'd like to use for this. Thanks for any help. Here's the link to see them. http://www.joann.com/catalog.jhtml?C...6&PRODID=97408
Alright, I am heading to Walmart after work. I happen to see this in a clearance bin for $ 4..... did not get them, since I was not sure how to use them. Let's just hope they are still there a week later. After reading the comments, I think I can invest the $4, esp since they were orginally over $12.
Okay I rushed to get ready and hit Walmart before work. I was standing in the dang checkout at 7:05. They had to get a price check on one set and it was 7:25 !!!! before they got back. I have to be signed in at work at 7:30. Boy did I rush out of there. I ended up getting set 1 for $ 4 and set 2 for $9.97. Geez should of not even questioned them for set 2.
I've seen several people suggest rubbing waxed paper on your CS before using the stylus, but I just put the waxed paper on top my CS while I'm emossing and it works so much better. The waxed paper is easy to see through and I find that I don't tend to tear the paper from pressing too hard. It can't hurt to try and see what you think.
