Just wondering what your favorite most versitle back ground stamp may be. I just bought my first one last night and tried to find the one I would get the most use out of. It looks like an old screen but unfortunately it's not SU.

Right now I love SU Floral background stamp. Check the gallery. You can do some pretty neat things with it. I also think canvas is pretty verstaile to add texture to paper.

I like just jeans and canvas. Both go with just about everything. That's not to say that I don't love Floral, French Script (have this one and love it with anything floral), and the new print pattern.
My favorite is Print Pattern. I love it because it goes with so many stamps & it doesn't have to be perfectly stamped. Background stamps can be difficult at times (unless you step on them or brayer them).
I think Canvas would work well for that *old screen* look you were admiring. Just sponge on the ink from a reinker unevenly, or use Versamark and only sprinkle embossing powder in areas you want background.
Canvas looks good embossed with metallic embossing powder, is very subtle with just a watermark pad, or a coordinating pastel. And it can be used with other background stamps. French script and canvas used right on top of each other is very nice. French script is SU! classic for an elegant touch.
The new "Cheesecloth" background stamp might be the sleeper success this year. Look at the samples on this website - it's not much to look at until you use it on a card. Very soft, tactile look.
Canvas
By Definition
Word by Word
Simple Stripes
Soft Swirls
Just Jeans
Paisley (there will always be a spot on my stamp shelf for this one!)
Floral Print
French Script
Oh, I listed all of mine! LOL!! It's so hard to say, because each has such a different and unique look and can be made to look so much different by using different techniques with each!
I say......get 'em all!

I purchased 2 background stamps early on (By Definition and Just Jeans) but rarely used them. Somehow, I've been re-introduced to them and now I absolutely love background stamps. And...I love them all. I have Just Jeans, Canvas, Highways and Byways (retired), Filigree (retired), Word by Word (love it). I want French Script too....They just seem to complete the cards. Once you get the hang of them, I'm sure you'll love them too. I find the easiest way for me to use them is to lay my stamp rubber side up, ink it well, lay my cut cardstock on top, lay a piece of computer paper on top of that, press down so it doesn't move and rub all over, then carefully remove your cardstock without smudging....
Not one person said Victorian Lace. No wonder I got so many replys to my asking on the swap board if I could buy it, apparently no one likes it. I have seen some nice samples of it in the older catalogs before it retired and I haven't received it in the mail yet but I am looking forward to working with it. I have 7 background stamps and I just love them all.
My 2 favorites as of now are Floral and Print Pattern. Both of them I did not like when I saw them in the catty. Seeing cards in the gallery changed my mind.
My vote is for Canvas. But, Houndstooth is on its way. When Brown arrives, it may be my fave for awhile. But it the end, Canvas will win out because I'm sure it's more versatile.
