I was cleaning up my studio over the weekend in preparation for the DTGD challenges that will start on Saturday, and I rediscovered my Distress Crackle Paints. Cool! I opened one - rock hard solid dried rock. The brush wouldn't even come out - the handle broke upon opening! OH NOOOOOOO!
I opened the rest of my 20 or so bottles. All but maybe 6 were completely dried out. The rest were about the consistency of silly putty. So I stuck my finger into one and smeared it all over a piece of cardstock. Why waste it, right? Well, I went ahead and smeared all the rest of the colors onto some more cardstock and let them all dry. I've got some crackle paint backgrounds ready to go - IFFFFFFFFFFFF they don't all flake off before I use them.
Moral of the story? USE your paints before they dry up on you!
Have you had to throw away any crafting supplies because you forgot about them?
I threw out some mini pots of acrylic. Acrylic based paints seem to be the worst for drying out. I am more careful about investing in things like that, that dry out now even though they were only small things.
When I buy acrylic paints, I buy basic cheap acrylic and look for other ways to get effects I want.
yep, I've tossed those jars of embossing paste and they are a tiny more spendy then the crackle paints so, now I don't buy every color I have like clear and crackle haha...
but, I've also suffered paint losses during winter having the dang things freeze too.
I dont know if they have refills ive never seen any. They were really old, the newer ones have a different tip than the tiny one they used to have. That tiny tip seems to dry out quickly, I have a bunch of markers where the chisel tip is the only part working.
Gel pens, souffle pens - any/all specialty "pens" that sit too long. There's a thread somewhere on reviving them, but I've never been successful at it...
Oh, how disappointing about your Crackle Paints! I think I would cry after spending the $$ on them :( I have had that happen to Gesso and some of my acrylic paints.
I was at a Craft Store on the weekend and I had bought a 2 in 1 Sailor Glue pen from them about 6 months ago and put it in my desk drawer and promptly forgot about it (you now how it is ;)). I went to use it a few weeks ago and it didn't work. I had assumed that it was dried out but the store owner said that there was a bad batch of them and that they had had to return about 500 of them from customers because they NEVER worked - there was a manufacturing fault! So, I was credited the amount off my purchases which was very kind after all that time.
I wonder if it would be worthwhile getting in touch with Ranger and asking how long they paints should last after opening? It can't hurt and from what I have heard, Ranger have very good customer service. I have a couple of Distress Paints so I am going to check them right away
For what it's worth, I had a bottle of crackle paint that went very thick but still a bit gooey. Before throwing out, if you can really mix/reincorporate some water into the paint, the paint will still crackle. If will be too far gone if you can't get all the hard clumps out.
I had a nice set of Making Memories acrylic paints. Always meant to use them. Finally took them off the shelf to paint some little wood birdhouses to put out in the back yard. Rock hard. They weren't really that expensive, but it is annoying that I didn't take the time to use them. I also had a bottle of Elmer rubber cement. I used it a couple times and then when I finally got around to making the project I wanted to make with it, the bottle was empty. I guess the lid wasn't on tight enough or didn't close properly and the glue was all evaporated. Again, not very expensive, but all this money dribbling away adds up to quite a bit.
I've had that problem with a few Crackle Paints as well. I really like them, but now I see why they aren't around anymore (or if they are still around they are under the radar). I had a few that were dried out when they still had the plastic on them! I'm glad I got the use out of them that I did when I did. Now it's mainly Crackle Accents when I want a crackle effect.
All mine dried out too. I have also thrown out an awful lot of Viva Decor products and that was really disappointing too! So much good stuff, so little time!
