As much as I'd like to see them offer some clear stamps, I can only imagine they might some day offer the choice of wood or no wood so we can decide how we want to mount them ourselves. But I bet they stay rubber, at least for the most part.
Everyone seem to be doing clear stamps, i think the alphas would work well as they are soo much easier and better to store!
Penny Black are releasing clear stamps (not alphas) of some of the retired designs cutesy ones etc.... so it certainly looks like clear stamps are becoming everywhere.
I must admit altho i do have hundred of clear stamps, there is something about the wooden ones, they just look so much nicer !!
Good question on this thread I was suspecting they would offer an acrylic line maybe sometime. I do have some acrylic but admit I like the wood mounted better. With the stampin ma jig you can get the acrylic like placement.
i don't really know anything about the un mounted 'system'
SU! stamps come un mounted... is there something that would need to be different for a typical un mounted 'system'?
i don't understand why you said you would like them to go un mounted.
Rubber stamps that are "unmounted" usually come as rubber with cling vinyl cushion that will adhere to acrylic blocks and then peel off easily and store for later use. The cling vinyl side is not stickey at all but rather has the feel of those window clings that you put up on holidays and peel off with no residue left behind.
SU "unmounted" really means do-it-yourself wood mounted.
Both unmounted rubber and clear stamps work with acrylic blocks providing the rubber is mounted on the cling cushion or you used some other type of temporary adhesive.
As far as SU going clear? The way Shelly talks about her feelings on that subject, I think it would really take a lot for her to make that change.
Clear stamps are nice but they have no track record yet for life span. I found a rubber stamp that my grandfather used for his checks that was probably more 50 years old. Worked as good as new. Now that's a life span. LOL!
I've tried both types many times. I like both but I just prefer the feel of rubber. But I can't say that I won't purchase clear because I like stamps in general and if something trips my trigger, I get it.
HTH!

I think when people say they'd like them to offer "unmounteds" they mean that they would like to be able to purchase just the rubber, at a reduced cost, rather than have to figure out how to get rid of the wood blocks that they didn't want.
I've heard it said that SU has and is investigating polymer stamps, but until they are satisfied that the image quality and longevity of the material are excellent, they won't be making changes anytime soon.
Honestly, I wouldn't care if they are clear or not.
I would like SU to offer the option of just purchasing the rubber or purchasing the rubber, with cushion, and the wood blocks. They would need two different price points. Then the customer can choose what they want, and those of us that would like to save money (by not buying wood we won't use) can... ta-dah!--- buy MORE stamps! LOL!
That is my only request from SU regarding UM. They can even sell the EZ mount, too, for convenience of the customer.
The Angel Company does unmounted rubber. They come in a sheet like SU, but the back side you can temporarily "adhere" to an acrylic block. Much like the acrylic stamps. So you can use the same acrylic blocks over and over with all your unmounted stamps.
This system saves you money and storage space, and you get the beautiful, inking, impression of rubber.
