I know that this has probably been discussed in another thread, but it would take me all weekend just to find it, so I apoligetically ask the method that works best for you.
I am moving my sets to wire racks and don't know if I should arrange them alphabetically or by category. Any suggestions?
I personally have all my SU stamps in tubs stored alphabetically - each tub has a list of all the sets inside. That doesn't include individual stamps, Papertrey, MFT or Bellas - they're wherever I can put them.
I used to have mine sorted by category, but recenly decided to sort them alphabetically. I like that method so much better. It is easier to find the set that I am looking for and when cleaning up I know where to put it. I do keep the christmas sets separate right now as I am using them a lot this time of the year.
Mine are by company first, then alphabetically. By company at least for the ones that the company name immediately jumps to mind when I'm looking for the set - SU, Papertrey, Kitchen Sink, Technique Tuesday, etc. I do have a bit of a jumble of the sets that are only one or two sets per company. I also have a small box on my stamping table that holds about 20 sets (in CD cases) for whatever I'm working with most at the moment - right now it's full of holiday sets from many companies.

Mine are all alphabetical. Then I don't have to worry which company or category they are from, just remember the start of the name of the set, go to that letter and you will find it.
Works for me. Good luck
Kathy
I do have backup in a file box by category of the sets I own, as well as have them on google documents, in case of fire (God forbid)-insurance purposes.
But here is my dilemma. I like the idea of by category and then alphabetically, but all the darn boxes aren't the same size so they don't stack evenly, thus making the stack unstable (I know, a little *nal). How do you get around this problem.

You can have them lying on their sides like books on a shelf.
I store by manufacturer - then alphabetically. Most of mine are unmounted, so this is not an issue.
I do have a little wire rack that hangs on the wall that I have my A Muse stamps on display. Those make me happy just to look at them. http://sarcasmisanartform.blogspot.c...1_archive.html If your scroll about 1/2 way down, you will see the racks. Don't worry -- I have added quite a few more stamps since then
I have all of mine sorted alphabetically and by size of box too. I have them on a 5 shelf bookshelf. I then put together a binder that has the stamp sets listed one per page. On that page, I have on the top of it, what year it came out, the title and how many stamps are in it. Underneath that, I stamped one of each stamp in the set. That way, if I am ever looking for a certain set or saying, I can flip through it and find what I am looking for.
Mine are just ..... bundled together on top of each other ... and I have to root for the ones I want - its like Christmas every day !!!
LOL This is me too! I think I need a better system though. I spend too much time looking for the set I need. I used to be organized, but then I moved and well, things just aren't back to normal just yet!
My single stamps are by category. My SU and CTMH sets are stored in seperate boxes. Alphabetically would probably make since. I seem to spend a lot of time rummaging around to find what I am looking!
Mine are alphabetically stacked on wire shelf dividers. Also I scanned each set and have a file on my computer. That way if I remember a saying that is on a stamp and can't remember which set it is on I can just scroll through on the computer instead of tackling all those boxes. Works for me...
I put my stamps on the copier and made a copy on paper of the set, then scanned them into an album on computer, and then, keeping SU in their boxes, all labeled except the first one I got 7 years ago or more, they are scattered in drawers, boxes, bags, rolling carts, bags on wheels, you name it - where ever they are I always know what stamps go in which sets and what words I might have...
I keep mine by category - with the ones I use most at eye level. I purchased additional SU boxes and combined smaller sets, so most of them are in the largest size box. I use the leftover smaller boxes for embellishments and such.
You guys would be laughing so hard at me today. I have changed the way I organize my stamps 3 times. I still don't know which I like best, and I guess I'll just have to see how hard it is to find something, in order to know if thie present system will work for me. It's interesting to see how many different ways that you organize, and how different systems work best for you.
I sort my in general alphabetical order a-d on one shelf, h-m, and so on.
One of my stamp friends took a picture of each of her stamps sets and placed the pictures in baseball card holders then numbered each set and put that on the back of the picture so she could just pull it whenever she wanted. No need to remember names or anything!

I have mine by category.
but, here's the kicker, I don't keep them together as "sets"
and i don't keep the su boxes they come in either.
they are all in either 11X14 upside down clear acrylic box frames or Iris project cases.
(because these stack better for me)
I'm lucky if my stamps actually make it back to where they are suposed to be after moving...
I have all my SU boxes stacked however they can be stacked into 2 sections of my shelves, and then the rest of mine either stacked like books (big WM stamps) and then 2 shelves just for my sugarloaf stamps (I have that many and since they are angel, I kept them seperate), one shelf for my CD case stored stamps, and the rest in wire cubes with acrylic boxes for storage to slide in and out.. if I get a chance to tomorrow I'll snap a pic - gotta clean first
I have them by category: seasonal, sentiments, floral, misc. They are in drawers. But I need to clean out a bunch--I guess it's a good thing there's a retiring list coming to force me to do that! I also need to tuck a little printed list in the front of each drawer, saying what's in there. Someday!
My SU! stamps are alphabetical on shelves like books. I tried storing them by category, but several sets include more than one category. Now it's a matter of remembering the name of the set I'm looking for... Background stamps and greetings sets are grouped separately.
I store my SU stamps by category. Retired are stored by case size...it just works better in my cabinet that way. I have my other wood mounted stamps stored by manufacturer in Sterilite drawers. My clear 'acrylic' stamps are stored by manufacturer as well. It's always a work in progress.
