Do you keep your sets together in the box when you store them, or split them up and store them some how differently? Like the alphabets sets for example...
I used to take the phrase stamp out if a set had one, like "thanks", etc. and keep all the phrases together. Now that I have more sets, I don't do this anymore.
I keep my current sets in their original box . My retired sets I take out the sentiments and store like sentiments together. I do stamp the original set on a page of cheap cardstock so I have record of what the original set contained.
I always keep my stamp sets together. I don't think I'd ever be able to get them back to the way they were (as a complete set) if I were to split them.
So far I've kept mine in the original boxes. However, I do like the idea of separating out the sentiments-would make it much easier to locate "the right words" when you need them. TFS.

I take mine apart.
First I stamp the entire set onto white cs so that I have a record of how they came together. I then break them up into categories - sentiments, birthday, flowers, trees, animals, one word, shapes etc.
I find that I get much more versatility with the sets this way. I don't feel confined to use just what came in the case on one project.

I store all my stamps out of their boxes in trays---separated by category---i.e. flowers, bday images, animals, bugs and flying thingies, sentiments and so on and so on. Here is a picture of a tray stamp storage by wendykins at Splitcoaststampers I have them all stacked right on my table,so that i can look at all my hearts(or whatever) at once, with out having to flip through my index book.
I also take out all the sentiment stamps from the sets and store them together. Unfortunately, I didn't index my sets first, so I'm going to have a heck of a time returning them to their rightful homes.
I keep mine together with one exception. I have the 3 retired tag stamp sets and I've combined them into 2 boxes. I took the 6 that came in the punch box and split them 3 and 3 into the other two sets. I wanted to use the box to hold my markers.

I keep them in the original boxes. I do however have several sets out at one time and I stamp different stamps from sets onto 1 card. I do have the stamp set name on the side of each block so I never get confused on where it is suppose to go.
I sort by "like"
so thank-you sentiments are all together in one tray, Happy Birthday etc same deal... frogs are with frogs, birds are together. people are together.
( for a while it seemed like every su set i bought had a ty in it) so I've got a rule about su sets now... I have to want more then one stamp in the set to buy it... and if i only want half the set i sell the other half. there's no law against it...
I'm not a demo so, its easy for me to think this way i guess.
I don't separate my sets primarily so I can show customers what stamps come in a set. Yes, they can look in the catalog, but if I've got it in my hands it's much more convenient.
I have over 150 SU sets and they are all in their original boxes. Collecting since 1996. I have one of those white double shelf wire thingies that goes over your washer and dryer. But mine is over my desk. It's in the garage/craft room. It holds all of mine. Of course there are 2 shelves and each stack is pretty high.
I always copy the label to keep in a binder and often pull it out just to browse through. Even so, it seems like I am always in a hurry to finish up with a sentiment and end up grabbing the first thank you or happy birthday I think of. So I am starting a slow process of creating a sub-binder of sentiments/word only.
I have a page of all the thank you stamps, another for birthday, etc. Beside each stamped (or copied in some cases) image, I write the name of the set so I can find it easily. This includes PTI and individual stamps. Hopefully, this will help me use the sentiments that came in a set and I promptly forgot were there.
If there is a lot of extra space in the box after the stamps are mounted, sometimes I move the set to a smaller box. If I have non-SU stamps that coordinate well with an SU set, I'll add them to the box (i.e., I put a few Hero Arts birthday greetings in the box with "It's Your Birthday"), moving the set to a larger box if necessary.

I like your stamp trays; what a great idea. Where did you get your trays?
OCD. They must be in the boxes the came in. With the exception of a few loose ones I got from going to parties. I throw them in a box where they fit. The horror of mixing and mingling. I'm just kidding. To each their own, but I will keep mine separated into their propr boxes.
I used to take the phrase stamp out if a set had one, like "thanks", etc. and keep all the phrases together. Now that I have more sets, I don't do this anymore.
I did that also. I now have 4 of the large boxes full of just sayings and I use them now more than ever. I keep them with the sets of sayings.
I did a total upheaval off all my SU sets. I had some all occasion sets that just weren't getting used, and found some commonalities in some of the images, i.e. the artist or lines were the same and wanted to put them together. So everything is by theme and or artist/style. I have a section of all hearts, animals are together, etc.
I kept all the flower sets together as they came originally as I liked how they were (tulips, watercolor, etc. )
I love it and since I realized I have no intention of getting rid of any of them I find it really liberating, and have used pieces together that wouldn't necessarily be used together if I had to pull out 6 different sets. And using them more often.
Most of my sets are in their boxes. A couple of years ago, I did separate my retired sets and put like with like (animals, "thank you", "happy birthday", etc.)
I hope to someday have a cabinet with trays that I can continue to do this with my retired sets, but until I get that, they'll remain in their boxes.
I have a card catalog of my stamp sets so I can keep them together but still know what I have. For example, Favorite Teddy Bear set...the whole set is stamped on a card and classified under animals, the hat and ballon are stamped and classified under birthday, the bouquet is stamped and classified under flowers. I also keep my like sets in containers, i.e. the valentine's/love container, the Christmas container, etc.
That way they stay together but if I need a flower stamp I just go to the flowers section of my catalog and the Favorite Teddy Bear bouquet will be there as an option.

"So happy together!!!!!" (picture that this message comes with background music) I have every set I ever bought since 1997 in the original box!
I know it's sick but I literally know every dot or flower and each set that it goes with. {Don't ask me for my anniversary though! Ha!}. Seriously, I actually think it's easier to keep track of all my stamps and sets if they're together, they retain their value better and they store nicely.
I keep all of my sets together with the exception of "Say it with Stamps". I keep these all in the larger of the SU boxes sorted by holidays, thank-you's and birthdays. I have my sets sorted on shelves my husband built for me kind of like the way the SU catalog lay out. Is that OCDish???

I keep mine all in the original set and stamp an index then keep all sets in alphabetical order. Then when I need something specific, I can just look through my book and find what I need quickly.

I know I don't have nearly as many sets as you do (only been stamping since '04), but I know all of my individual stamps, too! Just know you're not alone in your sickness!
