Thanks for the replies! I recently purchased the watercolor pencils and was trying to decide if I wanted to get the pastels. I love the pencils but just wasn't sure about the pastels.
Okay, sorry to play devil's advocate, but I vastly prefer my pastels. I can do way more things with them. I can easily achieve a brilliant water color look with a blender pen and pastels. I have also used a wet paint brush with my pastels for a lighter look. They give a really great soft, matte look if you use a big cotton ball and just rub them gently all over. I also use them swirled onto a background paper and then wet down. I have scraped flecks of them onto paper then brushed across with a wet brush for a slightly grainy wash of color. Basically, you can do with them almost everything you can do with pearl X.
Now, don't get me wrong. I do love the pencils. But I just think the pastels are more versatile. If I had to choose only one, I'd choose pastels.
I'm voting pastels on this one.
One simple reason: Everytime I try to use my watercolor pencils, I get frustrated because they are hard to match to SU colors unless they are already wet. I love having all 48 matching colors.
That bieng said, I really don't use either of them that much. I prefer to watercolor from the inkpads.

I was an SU workshop tonight and the demo used the "Watercolor Pencils". I must say that I fell in love with them. They seem to be more versatile than the "Pastels". I think I'm getting those next for my own future demonstrations. They do also seem to have a prettier color effect on your projects.
I LOVE my watercolor pencils! I love my pastels, too, though. The biggest difference is that the pastels come in *all* 48 colors. I sure wish the pencils did!!!

I definitely prefer watercolor pencils. For some reason, I just don't *get* the pastels... Don't ask me why - I think I'm just artistically challenged.
