Do you make cards when you need them or just because?
Just curious thats all. I tend to find that if I make cards they never get used because they don't look good a couple of months later (cause your cards just keep getting better and last months cards are just "Ugly") or when I need a card for someone I take the opportunity to make a personalized card.
I make cards beacause I enjoy making them, and to justify buying so many supplies. I like to have a supply of cards on hand just in case, and also for when my family come to visit because they are always going through my stash and buying cards from me to give to others. For birthdays/anneversiry I do make cards to suite the persons personallity.
I mostly make cards for fun and to try new techniques. I have a large selection on hand just in case I am running late or out of ideas. When I do make one to give away, I make a duplicate for my card library.
I usually have a "stash". I made a fabric card holder shortly after I started stamping. It has pockets for birthday, get well, sympathy, encouragement, baby, etc. When I need a card for an occasion I can usually find one that's appropriate. It's amazing to me how many times I've made a card for no apparent reason and it's turned out to be perfect for something in the future. That reminds me - my stash is getting low. I better get to work, lol!

I make them just for fun, but I give most of them away. I work for a huge company so I usually will write encouraging words or encouraging poems inside, and leave them on their desk. And I am always amazed how people are so touched that some one thought of them.

ME TOO! I can't count the number of times someone's said a card came just at the right time, or said just the right thing. It's humbling! Recently I made cards for nursing home residents that some women in our church visit weekly. One of the women told me they're using them all around the nursing home for decorations! Wow! Card making truly can be ministry.

I just like making cards. I love that there are a bunch to choose from when I need one. I didn't make a single Christmas card specifically for Christmas. I had plenty to choose from as a result of just stamping over the last few months.
I stamp "just because" and tend to make multiples of the same design to have on hand, just in case.
I still spend time searching for the right one for a specific person and often add the sentiment when I am ready to use it. So in a way, it's not that much different to me than buying a card out of a rack.
I rarely create a card for a specific person or specific occasion since I have such a nice variety stashed and ready.
Sometimes I do make a specific card for someone, but usually I am just making them for fun...and when I find a need for it I send one from my stash. Every once in a while I pack 3 or 4 older ones together and give them as a little just-for-nothing gift.

I do both so I didn't answer the poll. Sometimes I get in the mood or want to challenge myself to use a certain stamp or technique so I will make a card just because. But typically most of the cards that I give were made with that person in mind. One of my colleagues was rediagnosed with breast cancer when she found out she was also finally pregnant. There's just not a card for that kind of thing. I will never forget how touched she was by the card I created. It was therapeutic for me too as I was devastated by the return of her cancer, but thrilled that she was finally going to be a mother.
I stamp for the simple joy of creating something that will bring a smile to someone else. I frequently mail cards to my grams, and a close close family friend who lost her husband almost 2 yrs ago. Then there's the odd 'odd' card i mail to my sister. lol
I love making cards...thank goodness....I am constantly making them. Last night I made another 3 dozen Christmas cards....for next season. I try to make Christmas cards all year long in amongst the others so I have a good supply for the troops, swim teams and church when the season rolls around.
Blessings.
I make cards because I love to stamp, and that's what you do when you stamp! <g> Actually, I was never a card *sender* much at all before I started stamping!! <g> My mom always said that if you gave a gift, you didn't need a card too, and I rarely sent cards through the mail... DH thinks that some of these holidays (not talking about Christmas here!) are mostly money-makers for Hallmark! <g>
I've been an SU demo for 4.5 years and I have binders full of cards and my customers LOVE to look at them. Even the ones that have OLD cards in them, with images from long-retired stamp sets. And actually, I just raided some of my older binders for a few more Christmas cards! I didn't want to use all my current Christmas set samples, so I used some older ones! We sent out about 75 cards and many were one-of-a-kind, but there were 2-4 of a kind too. I HATE mass-producing cards!
So I usually stamp every day, and it takes me about an hour to make a card (I'm very slow, but I enjoy it a lot!).

I like to make cards for fun...but also try to make ones that I know I will use at a moment's notice...sympathy, get well, thinking of you. Some I even keep blank so I can attach a sentiment later on as the need arises.

I make cards simply to make them, but I have a running list of what I need and when, and sometimes I make cards specifically for that person. I use nearly all of them, except now and then I will make a card and totally hate it, or it just isn't right or something. That's when it meets the garbage bin!
Hi!
In the past few years I've been making cards as needed. The goal for 2009 is to just make cards and rebuild my stash. With a large stash I tend to give away blank cards and they're always well received.
Stamp more - spend less, that's my 2009 motto. Then when I get to buy I can buy fun new stuff instead of being overwhelmed with the unused stuff. LOL!!!
I couldn't do the poll because I make cards because I enjoy it AND when I need one. I enjoy doing some of the challenges here on SCS, so I always have some cards on hand. But for family and close friends, I rarely so to my stash; I usually make a special one for the occasion.

I do both, but mainly because I try to do a few of the weekly challenges and try out new techniques and such. Doing the challenges has helped me grow a nice stock pile of cards!!!!
I do both. I create just for fun and for specific events. I tend to send out more birthday cards then others, so I try to stock those.
It's nice to have a little stash for those last minute moments when you get invited to something or find out of an event the night before and don't have time to make a card.
I answered because I like making them. Really though I could have said both if were an option. Sometimes something comes up that needs a card to be made specially for it. Does that make sense?
I make cards because I really enjoy it! . Most of the cards I make "just because I want to" I keep in a box. When I need one, most of the times I make one just for that person in mind. I should really make two of the same designs so I can use them to mail away, because usually the cards I tend to make "just for fun" are much prettier (I think) than the ones I make when I "need" one.
I make them for both reasons , but mostly because I need the stress reducer!!!! I love to make them and sell them also to friends and family.
I also make those special occassion cards as needed. I have never made the same card twice, except for one time when I did 10 the same for a swap. I just find each time I finish one, I have a new idea lingering somewhere.
Both, but I will admit that NEEDING to make one really does seem to get me in the swing more. I have a hard time sitting down to do it (with all my other obligations), just for fun... but when I need one, I will often make more, too.
