Do you CASE cards, or usually come up with your own design?
I tend to CASE cards, 99.99% of the time. While I may change a detail or use a different stamp, the design of the card I case, is the same. I think I have only made one or two cards, that I came up with on my own, in the 4 years I've been stamping.
I'm just one of those people who simply can't seem to come up with their own card design. But that's ok, because that is where "copy and share everything" comes in. Personally, I prefer to case cards. I look at a stamp set I have (Stampin' Up) and google the name of the set. I also go on YouTube and key it in. I really love watching videos, when looking for a card to make. So many wonderful ideas come up. I am grateful to those people who don't mind sharing their lovely cards and let others case them. It's a compliment to the person who made the card, and is probably pretty flattering! :-)
I was wondering if I am in the majority (99.99% of the time, I case) or the minority, when it comes to doing this. Do you usually case cards, or come up with your own design?

I CASE about 80% of the time. I CASE from my favorites folder here on SCS, from blogs, and from Stampin' Up! catalogs. One of my favorite things to do is to "work" through a catalog - I dog ear the pages of all the samples I want to make, writing on the catalog page the set I want to use (I almost always use what I have on hand) and what I want to CASE from that sample. Then I challenge myself to make those cards before the next catalog comes out. It's so fun!
Sometimes in the process of casing, I get inspired enough to do something on my own. When that happens and I let myself go with it, I am usually quite happy with the result, too!
Ok, I think you and I could be twins! I case almost all the time. Don't feel creative enough to come up with my own ideas, though it seems after over 10 years I am finally able to come up with some of my own. I love making a card and then doing more with different stamp sets or paper, but the same sketch.

I've been stamping a long time (18 years). At the beginning, I did copy card samples or was heavily inspired by samples and 'mostly' copied them. But over time my confidence grew and I also began to incorporate mixed media, so I really don't CASE too much anymore. I also do a lot of scenic stamping, and like to create original scenes. I took some art classes at the local community college to learn about composition, color theory, value, line, etc and that also made me more confident to branch out. Here'a a card I did today while I was stuck inside due to an ice storm. I think, whatever makes you happy and motivates you to use your supplies, is good. It's wonderful if someone's work inspires you.
I do both. Like Nicole, sometimes when I'm casing I veer off in a different direction.
Sometimes there just aren't a lot of samples for the sets that I own, so I come up with my own design. I usually make different pieces and then shuffle them around before gluing to see what works.
I also really love stamping patterns and making my own patterned paper and wrapping paper.

Something nearly always kickstarts me, usually it is seeing a card on Pinterest or wherever. From that, many things can be the inspiration-stamp set, colour combo, die cuts. Or sometimes all the above I rarely sit down with nothing rattling around my brain looking to be copied in some way.
So to what degree is the CASING, that is the question ;)
Another CASE'er here, at least 98% of the time. Although by the time I end up finishing the card most of the time it looks nothing like what I was copying. That's not by choice, either. It's because I measure wrong, can't find similar DSP, find out I don't have the stamp(s) I thought I had after all ... The list of reasons goes on and on, but you get the idea.
I'm a shameless CASE'r. As my gallery will attest to. However, I do change up things a bit from time to time-different stamps, color, paper, dies, etc. Sometimes I combine two sample to make one card. Final answer: Yes, I an a CASE'r! I do try to give credit to whoever inspires me.
I think, whatever makes you happy and motivates you to use your supplies, is good. It's wonderful if someone's work inspires you.

Personally, I’m CASE challenged. I’ve tried it a few times for challenges etc and it just makes me freeze! Patterned paper generally has the same effect on me - love to see what others do with it but ask me to use it myself and creative paralysis sets in 99% of the time!
I think I'm incapable of case'ing. I'm one those people at a convention or something whose make-n-takes never looks like the sample, I just have to make it my own.
I like looking what/how others create but I need to do it my way. I may love someone else's but even if mine looks just like theirs, I will hate mine. Every time I look at it I will pick it apart in my head and be thinking "it would have looked better if ..."
I would say that I'm inspired by others' cards, but I rarely copy exactly. I find it harder to copy exactly than to adapt a design and add my own personality and flair. Even when I teach classes, I tell my students to try to "make it their own."
I bless all the wonderful stampers from whom I have CASE'd cards. I'm a bit design-challenged, so for me it's essential. I sometimes a copy the card closely, but more often use it to get my card going and see where it takes me.
I do a bit of both, to be honest. Usually my case-ing isn't a direct copy of something I've seen, but it's given me an idea that I'll do a take on. Different but similar stamps, for instance.

Same for me (perhaps because you were my teacher ☺). I am most inspired by sketches and color combinations so it is much easier to "not" exacgly CASE those inspirations.
Mostly do my own designs. I do occasionally like to take a look at Pinterest, though.
I do like to be inspired by something...such as Inspiration Challenge.

When I started stamping I CASE'd most of the time. I was buying more stamps back then and would come to splitcoast for ideas for specific sets. I think I lurked for a few years before ever uploading anything.
Now it's pretty rare for me to CASE anything, but I think it is a great leaping off point and especially great when you're first starting out. I actually have a hard time with scale and so substituting other stamps can be a struggle even when I work with a sketch I find it hard to replicate the design elements in the right proportions (I loved it back when the sketch challenge included the dimensions!)
I do both, but mostly CASE. I love you tube for ideas, and I attend a Stampin' Up workshop monthly... use all their ideas. I have been a card maker nearly 40 yars now, but only into rubber stamping and newer methods since about 1994. (Before that, cross stitch, embroidery and embroidery punch cards). I am very grateful for all the creative people who gladly share their ideas...
I do both as well. Most of my cards are inspired by what I see around me and then I try to recreate that idea with what I have. When I began uploading here at SCS, I found the most inspiration from the daily challenges.....I love to solve problems, so each challenge gives certain "rules" or parameters to follow. Then I fell in love with the Featured Stamper challenge on Sunday.....I love to edify others, so helping each stamper celebrate their special week by case-ing one of their cards is important to me.
I loosely CASE. I may use a layout from one card, a color combination from something else, and stamp sets that I own. Thank GOODNESS for people who are very creative or I couldn't play with this hobby!!!
When I first started stamping, I almost always cased a card, but tried to change it up just a bit. Thane after I retired, I started doing the SCS challenges, which really helped me to make a card on my own. Now I very rarely ever case anymore. So thank you to all the great card makers out there that helped me in the beginning, and if anyone as ever cased one of my cards, THANK YOU for the best compliment you could bestow upon my humble talents😁

When I began stamping [far too many years ago to remember] I cased most every card I made. Now, while I look at Pinterest a lot, and save cards to my boards, I rarely case a card. I get so many ideas by looking at my boards that my "head goes crazy with ideas" and I can't create fast enough.
I case 95% of the time. I do make my own designs sometimes but they take me forever to create! For some reason I just can't figure out a card for myself. Either too busy or not happy with the out come.
I've done both...mostly now I design my own. I've been known to tell my husband that I've been working on a card that just wouldn't make up its mind how it wanted to be, or kept changing its mind on being finished.

If I'm doing something like a specific creative/fun fold, especially when I've never done it before, I pretty much always CASE, at the very least for the design. But I've found myself (for "plain" cards) taking inspiration from other cards but then making it my own. I will often look at a card on Pinterest or wherever, and study it some to see what I like about it & want to incorporate into my design. Sometimes my objective is to make one much like it. But then I don't look at that image when I'm creating. When I finish working, if I go back & look at the inspiration card, mine often doesn't look much like it, which I find pretty cool myself!
Of course, for cards I sell, that's a different ball of wax. I do still take inspiration from other things (colors, design ideas, etc.), but make sure to come up with my own design. My art history professor in college used to say, "Nothing exists in a vacuum." Meaning, everything/everyone is influenced by--and in turn influences--others. So I think, especially with all the inspiration out there and how easy it is to come by if you look/listen, it's impossible to come up with a truly 100%-original anything. What I do always builds on what someone else has done. So do I CASE? I'd say I fully do sometimes, and always do to some lesser extent the rest of the time. Interesting question!
I CASEd a lot more when I started out, but I'm feeling more confident now and mostly do my own designs. Though I still pin things to Pinterest - then when I'm in a creative slump, I search my pins for something that will spark an idea.
I am always so flattered when someone CASEs one of my card.

I have a large file of card pics that I want to do someday. When I start a card, I CASE it as much as I can. I use papers I have that are close to the original. I usually have the stamp or die sets used for the original. From there the card usually takes on a life of it's own. If I make more than one, no two are exactly the same.
I CASE a lot! People say I'm creative, but I really don't come up with ideas of my own. If I change anything it would be the stamp---because I don't have it or want to use a different image entirely. I may change a color or add a special embellishment of my own, but nearly always CASE.

When my mojo is non existent. But a lot of the time I design my own. I think about card making all the time And often will dream about a card I want to make .

What a huge relief to read that I am not the only one who fails as an original designer! My Gallery is skimpy because I assumed posting a copy of another person's card would be way-wrong. I've copied dozens of cards, maybe hundreds even, and always enjoyed the outcome because they look sophisticated where my originals have a kindergarten-look I've never been able to shake.
Fortunately, not being a really great cardmaker has not stopped me from enjoying the craft immensely. For people like Bergit, it's an art, but for me it is a craft........and oh how I have tried (and failed) to imitate her cards!!!!!
bahb, I'm so glad to read what you wrote. I have made cards for thinking of you, just because, sympathy, birthday and blank cards. And every single card in my stash, 100% of them, are all cased. I send those out. I love them and they turned out fabulous! Gorgeous, even. LOL But, had I not cased them and made my own, there wouldn't be any cards for me to send out. I am one of those people who simply can't seem to come up with my "own" design. Never have.
And like you, it hasn't stopped me either! I've seen some stamps on the back of cards, that say, "Designed by...…" And I laugh, because their cards are works of art, are really beautiful and are designed. My cards are just "made" and my custom made stamp that I put on the back of all my cards says: "Made with love by Beth." LOL

I get what you're saying, I love to look at sketches and card designs from other crafters and unless I'm actually looking at another card while I'm making my own I don't know if I'm CASEing someone or just riffing from other things I've seen. However, that does not take away my enjoyment at playing with stamps, ink and paper (and other doodads, of course) and I appreciate the wonderful cards that are posted here and elsewhere on the 'net. (oh, and by the way, your gallery is filled with gorgeous cards)
