Dawn McVey has the cutest Christmas tags on her blog today. I just finished making some medallians with my scalloped circle nestie and it looks so great. I am going to make a few for this year.
I LOVE Christmas tags but what do YOU use them for?? One year I made these elaborate tags (kinda like Dawns) and attached them to presents and they ended up in the big pile of wrapping paper and ultimately in the garbage after all the gift opening was through.. And really, what else are you supposed to do with them? They're tags that say to/from!! I don't spend tonnes of time on them anymore. Last year I designed a simple design for my Silhouette to cut out and that was it!

wow they really are cute ! Thanx for sharing xx jo xx

I use more elaborate (but not that elaborate!) tags on a snack mix I give out but for Christmas morning madness, I agree, my family would just blaze right over them. I don't usually write on the tags so I hope some people reuse them but I agree, they are easily discarded once they are written on. If you use gift bags though and can figure out how not to actually write on them, people might reuse them.
The tags shown on Dawn's site are gorgeous but that would take me forever! LOL
I had another thought...if this size is really appealing to you as an artist it might be fun to do something on some sort of gift card holder if you are giving any of those (or cash). I do spend a little extra time on those usually and the recipients at least put the card back in them long enough to take it home. I imagine it often goes in the trash but again could be reused if not permanently marked with their name.
Well I think most of our cards end up in the trash, like the ceramic mugs I made years ago that chipped up over time. The cross stitched sweat shirts I made that kids out grow. I thought we made these because we liked doing this craft. I made 6 this afternoon and my daughter asked if she could have them to put on the packages she will be giving out to her friends.

Well said, Lorri. I agree with you. I make all the things I make because I enjoy making them. I make cards and other papercrafts, sew clothes and crochet.
I know that most of the items I make can easily be found in the retail marketplace (and sometimes for a lot less money than it cost me to make them, lol.)
I get my money's worth from my hobbies in the fun I have planning and making stuff and giving it away. If the recipient really likes what I made, well that's icing on the cake!
Every year I make little holiday items, sometimes as simple as a Hershey bar in a cute wrapper. I give them to the people I come in contact with all the time, the ones I think might even feel invisible sometimes - the clerk at 7-11 where I get my gas, the white-haired lady who could be home in her rocking chair, but smiles at me several times a week and says, "Welcome to Walmart."
The gal at the library who checks my books in and out. You get the idea. Not necessarily friends, but just the people in my everyday world.
You are right that most things in this life are temporary. I treasure those fleeting moments when I can tell from the look on a person's face that "the thought really did count."
PS I know your daughter will love using those pretty tags. I might even make some myself.

True.... but that being said most of my cards sit on a mantle or a bookshelf for at least a little while.. haha
And I do make cards because I love it, but I also want my work to be respected and enjoyed.. I feel the same about my music. I am a jazz singer and pianist, and the WORST gigs EVER are ones where I'm "background music." I won't do it anymore, and you can ask any other musician, those gigs SUCK for self esteem!
That's all... Back to talking about how amazing Dawn is!!!

Any idea what punch she used for the medallions? Some of them look like snowflakes to me! Very pretty!! Oh, I see you can trim the strip with pinking shears. What a great idea!
I too make things that I like to give....and yes I'm sure some items end up in the trash...but that's ok. I've enjoyed making them.
buggainok you are so right about seeing that the thought did count! I'm planning to do some little things this year...probably candy of some sort and give out to people in our small town. As they say, kindness never goes out of style and who knows...you might just make someone's day or week!
A few years ago my DH signed up for a Christmas gift exchange at work...he drew the name of an elderly gentleman. Their limit was $20-- DH put a lot of thought into what to get him....ended up getting him some type of tool. I wrapped it all fancy and pretty!!
The gentleman cried when he opened his gift.....he said it had been so long since anyone had bought something specifically for him!! You would have thought he'd been given something really expensive or substantial. He talked about that present for months...maybe even a year.
We were so thankful that we had an opportunity to give him a very special Christmas gift. He has passed on now, but him and his gift are some of our special Christmas memories to recall.
A couple of years ago I decorated our Xmas tree with tags of all sizes. I strung the small ones together to make a garland and used large tags as ornaments. I got a lot of compliments on the tree.
My family got together a a couple of years ago for Christmas, my sisters and I are all in different states. I was the only one who made gift tags and one of my sisters gathered them all up after all the presents were opened and she told me they would be cute as emblishments on the scrapbook layouts of that week we were all together.
Discreetly picking out of the wrapping paper trash makes me think of the time I had to crawl into the paper recycling bin in town because my Mom accidentally threw her camera in there...which wouldn't have been a huge deal except the card was still in it with almost 300 pictures! Ugh!
I think when the tags are that pretty and coordinated, I'd consider them part holiday decoration, as well. You can bet that any presents wrapped using those tags (and more than likely the wrapping paper would be equally gorgeous!) would be front and center under my tree, where they'd be most noticeable. Sort of like how I tend to put my extra special tree ornaments where I'll have the best view of them, kwim?
Also, I think a lot of us have "A" lists and "B" lists when it comes to deciding who gets handmade pieces of art and who gets quickly made or even store-bought cards and such. I mean, I know my sister would save a tag like that and use it as a decoration next year, where my brother would likely just toss it along with the wrapping. I don't bother with extra fancy trimmings for him, lol!

Oh my goodness!! That is such a great idea!

That is cool! I can see it now, a tree decorated entirely of tags made by Dawn McVey!!

This made me laugh! When I'm wrapping gifts, I ask myself "Is this person "tag-worthy"?" If I think they'll just throw it away without even notice it, they get a very basic one :o) If I know they'll enjoy it and treasure it forever (my mom), they get a nice tag!

LOL...sort of like Seinfeld's Elaine..."is this person sponge-worthy??"
I'm getting a Silhouette SD! I'd love to see your tags! Did you happen to post 'em on your blog? If so, could you send me the link?
I saw you were getting a Silhouette on your blog! That's so cool!
Here's a link to my blog from last year where I made a bunch of Silhouette projects... Tobi's Place: Gifts, gifts, and more gifts....
Here's a picture of one of the gifts I made. The little tag hanging off the side of the pocket is the thing I "designed." It's a rounded rectangle with a circle for the hole, and a tree shape in the centre. I put some patterned paper on the backside of the tag, but I also left some of them "open." It's really easy to design stuff like this with the silhouette software...
Hope that helps!!
ps... I just looked on my computer and I was smart and saved the file I created! There's 6 tags on a sheet of 8.5/11... if you want it email me!

O.K. I've been inspired. Now I'll feel just plain tacky if I use a store bought tag or sticker. The tags and silhouette boxes are begging to be made. Thanks for sharing.

Tammy, Dawn used the Limitless Layers Dies just released by PTI for the medallions. And she gives a link to Nichole's blog for instructions. They look really easy, esp if you have a score board.
