I made the box with nice weight plain white cardstock. Then I made a belly band from pattern paper that matched the paper on the notecards. You could stamp a matching image from your cards, mat it with a nesty shape, like a scallop circle or oval, and attach it to the belly band on the outside.
On some I made, I used the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die to make a flower from matching pattern paper and attached it to the belly band.
They turned out really cute.

Maybe you could create a "mailbox" out of cardstock? Create a rectangular base with little sides and an upside-down U shape to fit around it and stand the cards up vertically. The ends would be more difficult, but not too bad. Then you could make a little mailbox "flag", attach it with a brad and maybe put a sentiment on the flag.
I love the A2 boxes as well. Since they are moving, you could make it look like a suitcase.
What a cute idea! I was thinking it could be cute to make it look like a For Sale/Sold sign if they had purchased a new house, but a suitcase might be even better.
I just gave a set of cards to someone: Tied the stack of cards and envelopes with pretty ribbon and put that into a pastel colored little shopping-type gift bag with matching ribbon on the handle and added a sheet of matching tissue paper.
Very cool idea! I tried to post a comment on your blog, but blogger wouldn't let me. The cards you made for the inside of the bage very cool too. Love the fun design and bright colors.
I always keep a supply of clear children's party "treat bags" on hand. I tie with a coordinating ribbon and sometimes add a matching gift tag. Quick, easy & cute!
I often make a card holder as a gift with homemade cards inside. I use a place mat, folded up on the bottom to about the half-way mark, sewn from that edge to the new bottom in 3 sections large enough for cards or address book, stamps and a pen, It is then folded over in thirds and secured with a cord, snap, button/buttonhole, velcro etc. Once the cards are gone, it can be refilled and used when traveling to keep up with correspondence. I love the one made for me and have gotten raves from those I've given them to. They will hold about 20 cards, so if you are making more than that for the gift, the bag, box or simple ribbon, may be best.

What a darling idea! I must do this. Thanks for sharing it. There are such great ideas on this thread.

I can take a picture of mine (don't have any "on hand gifts" right now), but then I have no clue as to how to download it to this site. I am very computer illiterate, so anyone attempting to instruct me must be patient and go baby step by baby step.

Since there have been a couple requests for pictures of this, I took some and downloaded them to my computer. I found the "attachment" icon at the top here, so I'm going to give it a try. One is with the holder closed--this one simply uses a cord tied around. Others I have done had different closures. The second one shows it open with the pockets. Wish me luck!

What a beautiful finished gift that makes! Thanks for the pictures. I will be looking at placemats in the stores in a whole new way!
I've also found that the drawstring organza pouches you can find in the craft stores are great for packaging sets of small 3x3 cards. Make a matching tag for the outside, and you're done! I don't know if they make any large enough to fit A2 cards, I will look!

Yea! You did it! Pictures are great.
That is just so clever, cute and useful! I'm a bargain hunter, and I'm always seeing placemats on sale, usually just a couple, not a complete set. What a great thing to do with them.

Thanks so much for posting the photos. What a brilliant idea! I always make my mother a package of Christmas cards so I'm now thinking I can find some Christmas placemats and make a holder just like this for them.

I'm sure you could find some great Christmas ones. The pictures I posted used a rather neutral colored place mat (I love it), but I have made them in Red/White plaid, beautiful Blues and one that was Purple striped. I try to match them to he person who will get them. One that had all Southwestern-themed cards had Orange/Yellow/Rust zig-zags all over it. It is amazing how they turn out. One word of caution: since the bottom is turned up, it is upside down on the inside where you make the pockets, so be aware as you look at patterns that need to be one direction (i.e. carolers standing in a row--most likely their feet would be on the inside and pointing up! KWIM?). Have fun!

This is a great idea with the placemat. You can always find one or two odd ones in the clearance at Target at the end of a seasonal period. Plus I see them at TJMaxx and Ross, too. I also wondered what one would do with 2 placemats?

Thanks for the warning about the Christmas designs - I might not have thought of that until I started making it!

Maybe you could take the A2 box and make it look like a packing box. Use kraft paper and then put Fragile (this side up, ect) or write the place it should go: Office.
Love the idea about suitcase too!
I often use one of the smaller "book boxes" from Michael's for a gift box for cards to give away (if you have a Michael's near you). They look like beautifully decorated books, but are empty boxes once you open the cover. They are very reasonable with a 40% or 50% off coupon (or stock up when they go on sale), they are ready-made, sturdy, and then fun to use for whatever else as a little stash box after the cards are used up. Recipients have been delighted with the box (as well as the cards!)

I am one of the lucky ones to have received Jeanne's placemat card holder and it is truly very special and beautifully made!! It was a birthday gift to me and I treasure it.....as I treasure Jeanne as a friend and fellow stamper!
(BTW -this is my first post on a thread. I'm computer challenged as well but this was easy!)

Is that you, Chris? Thanks so much for your kind words. I'm the fortunate one to have a friend such as you! You should post some of your fantastic cards on SCS. Everyone would be wowed!!!
How about making or finding a "moving box". You could use kraft card stock to make the box. Close it with "packing tape" and write on it with a black marker.

Take a small brown paper bag and stamp something nice on the outside. Fill with gift cards, fold over the top of the bag and punch 2 holes side by side. Thread piece of ribbon through the holes and tie a bow. Makes a nice gift for male or females.
