Default Copic vs. Spectrum Noir

Has anyone used both and can give an opinion on how they compare?

I have both Copic and Spectrum Noir long with ProMarkers...They are all pretty much the same, different tips on some brands...I use them together with no problem...

I went with the full lot of Spectrum Noir because they are far more affordable than Copic, but I do buy Copic to fill in any colors I my need or want...ProMarkers are the same, I buy the colors I want...

I just got my first order of Dick Blick alcohol markers and for the price, they are just a good as the rest, just not as many colors...Great price to start you collection with and then fill in with the more expensive Copics for the colors you can not get in the others...

Just my 2 cents worth!

I am a copic fan. I love the way they blend and I like being able to find them easily.

I bought a set of six Spectrum Noir when they first came out. I sold them about a week later. For me, the blending was nowhere close to Copic, the colour sets seem too far spaced to be genuine blending groups and I'm a fan of the slimmer Ciao barrel (or Sketch at a pinch) so I didn't like the feel of the chunkier square barrel in my hand. I also like the very flexible brush nib on the Copic Ciao/Sketch so I didn't get on as well with the chisel and firm bullet tips on the Spectrum Noir.

A lot comes down to personal preference though so if you can get to try out each type you might find you like the things I don't care for!

I am totally not a fan of the Spectrum Noir markers, not only are they cheap (in price), but they are "cheap" in quality too (when taking off some of the caps sometimes, the whole marker came apart!). I had the full original set (like 160 or something), but I ended up sending them back. They didn't blend anywhere close to as good as my Copics and the tips were kind of lame (they come with a bullet and a broad tip, no brush). They really wick out so as soon as I would touch them to paper, they spread and bled everywhere and I could never get them to really "behave". I even tried their recommended paper and I never had any luck with them. I am a heavy handed colorer and they are just not for me. I think maybe if you had a really really light touch you could get them to work better for you, but only to a point. The colors just end up looking blotchy and not well blended even on the best samples I have seen with the markers.

Even with the best samples, the Spectrum Noir colored images don't look ANYTHING like some of the Copic coloring out there (not even the BEST Copic colored images, even the mediocre Copic colored images are better!). I think ANYONE can have great luck with the Copics, I just don't see that being the case with the Spectrum Noirs. The Copic colors just appear richer and you just get sooo much better blending with the Copics. Of course, that could be because the Spectrum Noir line doesn't have tons of colors yet, but that's still a big issue if you want to blend, but then again, if you don't want to blend, why even go with alcohol markers? ;)

I feel like Copics are better quality and much much easier to use. You pick them up and with the right paper that you like, you can be blending super quickly. With the others, I think it is a LOT more work to try to get them to do what you want them to do and even then you are left with lack of colors & quality issues.
