Default Copic on Fabrics

I have been searching and posted on the copic thread but no answer there.

Does anyone know how to use copics on T-shirts or onesies so that they don't run or bleed or wash out in the laundry???

any help woulf be appreciated.

TIA.

Copics are dye-based alcohol inks so they will fade with washings over time. One tip I would offer is to avoid using red if you can....it wants to travel a little in the wash, the other colors I have tested and wash fine. I would stick to onesies that will only be washed a few times before they have grown out of them otherwise if you have fading you might just have to color them again....
I use versacraft ink by Tsukineko for the stamping, this is a good permanent pigment based ink that is good in the wash as long as it has been heat set and doesn't bleed with the copics.

Have fun!

Unlike Sherrie, I've had no success with any level of permanence using Copics on fabric. I did a set of onesies for a friend's baby - all the colour disappeared on first wash. The Versacraft ink works great on the other hand so the onesies still looked cute with an outline design and sentiment!

Yes, just use your iron to heat set the Versacraft on fabric. I usually use a cloth of piece of kitchen towel over the top as I'm a bit on the impatient side and there's always a chance that I haven't let the ink dry fully and I don't want it on my iron!

just curious Joanne, did you prewash the onesie? I always do when I make them to wash out the sizing (?).

Have you looked on Marianne's blog? I think she has a tutorial on using them on fabric, or at least a post about it.

I wonder if you coated it with transfer medium if that would set the ink better. It would leave it kind of stiff, but maybe your image wouldn't fade in the wash - it would feel more like an iron on transfer. I don't have any transfer medium left otherwise I'd test it out (I have a couple load of wash to do today).

Yes - pre-washed and they were nice quality pure cotton. I used a greeny tone and an orangey tone (Putty and Raw Silk - that sounds horrible but they looked cute - you can see them here if you're interested!) and both colors disappeared to being a very faint stain when they first went through the laundry and totally disappeared on a subsequent wash. My friend uses a non-biological, sensitive skin washing liquid (no bleaching agents) so I'm sure it wasn't that.

I may have just been unlucky but I'd encourage anybody to do some tests before spending lots of time and potentially expensive materials on a project!

i MUCH prefer fabrico markers by tsukineko and versacraft ink pads by tsukineko for fabric coloring. i did my initial practice images on some of the baby's burp rags (cloth diapers) that not only go through the wash but with bleach and on the sterile cycle and after ONE YEAR of this they have not faded!!!

they are so cute. What a shame they didn't last :(
I have always used solid stamps and used SU craft ink. I would have thought coloring in an image on the material the marker would bleed, but they certainly look great. Must be a way to make them color fast.

The ink does tend to "travel" a little along the fibres of the fabric but you quickly get a feel for how far to stay inside the stamped line so that it doesn't bleed over. They still looked quite cute with just the line art image and sentiments but not quite as cute as they did coloured!

I've been meaning to try the Fabrico/Versacraft markers but haven't got round to getting any yet. The ink pads certainly perform well as long as you've heat set them. Do you have any pics of projects you can share with us, Cerridwen3301?

Here is a little post with photos and washing that you can see on my blog if you are interested:
http://sherrie-cardcreme.blogspot.co...nd-fabric.html

This is 100% cotton fabric that has been washed and dryed in my machine (with detergent) 7 times.
