I'm new to prismacolor pencils (got a small box of them) and I bought couple more today in Michaels (2 for $3), but I couldn't find OMS or Gamsol... either I'm blind or they have it under some other name :( So I just picked up a Colored Pencil Blender and trying to play with that.. I think I'll try the Baby oil or goo gone (as somebody suggested)
Hi there-- try the baby oil...I used it this weekend with some other artists pencils and it works great! I need to upgrade my coloring materials...but havent yet decided which way to go- prsimacolor pencils...markers...or copics......too many choices out there! Anyone have a clue where to start?

LOL - I was stumped too! Just down the road from you in Hamilton and was in Michael's and looking for Gamsol - think it's a brand name. No luck - but did find Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner. Read the ingredients on the back - 100% odorless mineral spirits. Voila! It was in the aisle with paints, thinners etc at Mike's.
I've been practicing with Koh-i-noor pencils that I also purchased at Mike's - and used a 40% coupon, so a pack of 24 cost about $12. Liking the results so far.

Yes, Gamsol is a brand name and Mona Lisa is exactly the same stuff, just a different brand. For any Brits looking at this, the most common brand name here is Sansodor. They're all generally with artist supplies rather than craft supplies, IYSWIM.
I hope this is staying on topic, but I have a couple of questions about OMS. I have been using Gamsol, and I love it! There is nothing about it that I don't like, except the price is quite a bit higher than others. Are the Mona Lisa brand and others exactly the same thing as Gamsol? Will I notice a difference if I buy a cheaper brand of OMS? Also, is the large tin can that you find in Home Depot type stores the same thing, or is there artist quality. I don't want to mess with a good thing, but the price difference is making me wonder if I am paying more for the same product. I look forward to your insight. Thanks in advance!

The other brands work just as well. I've used OMS from Home Depot and it work the same but you must be aware that that it is not as healthy for you to use it. Artist quality OMS (turpenoind, mona lisa, etc) is artist quality, more refined/pure and less fumes. I always thought that Gamsol was just repackaged OMS. I buy the big tins at Michael's with a coupon so I get even more savings.
If using Gamsol or Baby Oil with pencils, can you use it for scrapbooking. How if any will it affect pictures? Also if I use baby oil do you use it exactly the same as Gamsol and is the paper oily once you are done?
