Wow! Thank you all so much for this fantastic step-by-step information! Subscribing so I don't miss anything, and then I am off to stamp some "practice" images to carry around with you (thanks for the idea, Cindy!).
you all need to try Koor I Noor Pencils. Not as many colors but it goes on smooth and the colors are more vibrant than prisma.
I agree!
I used my prisma's all the time until I tried the Koh-i-noor pencils. I do not have any trouble blending with the koh-i-noor pencils like I did with some of the prisma colors.
I've been watching this thread and there are some great tips. I notice that we have a mix of mediums/techniques watercoloring, "ink blending", and Gamsol. If you are a newbie to coloring make sure that you are keeping the techniques tips separate.
I have the most wonderfull book by Dave Brethauer "Card Design". He explains everything in easy to understand instructions, it has wonderful samples, and detail explanations for all the cards. It's worth the $22.00
Yeah, when I get around to taking pics. Honestly, I don't see a huge difference at this point between regular watercolor pencils and prismacolor. Sigh.

I couldn't tell much difference either other than watercolor pencils with a blender pen were much easier to do for me... but I figured I must have been doing something wrong... since I wasn't wowed by the prismacolor pencils. Now I tend to use my prismacolor blender pencil for a smooth penciled look when I use them and use watercolor pencils for the watercolor look... but I'm definitely not nearly as talented as the ladies on SCS.
OK, just out of curiosity, how to Copic markers fit in to the scheme of things? Better, worse, worth the money? I know this thread is about watercoloring, but since we've also touched on Prismacolors and Gamsol, I just thought I would ask . . . .there are just too many cool methods of coloring!
Okay, lemme see if I can add some samples as thumbnails. If I'm successful, the one in blue/green/brown is colored with watercolor pencils, the one in blue/red/white is colored with prismacolors. I would love any opinions and/or tips!

Lisa--good job on BOTH. I see what you mean, tho', about not looking like there is much difference. The only suggestion I have is to repeat what I said before--trying coloring harder with the prismacolor pencils, then blending with the Gamsol (or baby oil, or whatever). The colors will be brighter and more vibrant than what I think you can achieve with the watercolor pencils.
Both are great the way they are, though. Adorable cards.

Wow, Lisa, I can't believe these were your 1st attempt! You've done a beautiful job with both mediums! :-D
I haven't dabbled in watercolor yet but I have the paper and intend to after New Years. I absolutely LOVE using Prismacolor colored pencils and OMS. After seeing GinaK's tut using Koh-i-noor pencils, I bought a set of 24 for $15.95 at Mike's and w/ 40% coupon, they were around $9. I use these to compliment my Prismacolors. They are a much richer, vivid color which gives me a greater, deeper, accessable range of color for my images.
Here is Gina's video on Colored Pencil Magic. She lays all her colors on to begin with. I always start with the lightest color, use my stump, then layer to darkest using OMS after each layer. Watch how frequently she goes back and touches her stump to the OMS.
Thanks for posting your cards. *Keep on Keepin' On* ;) and show us more!
May God bless, Sandi

Yay, thanks for sharing! They both look great but I have to say I do think the Prismacolor one has more depth to it. The shading is better defined (look at Riley's nose - you have the appearance of a shadow under the horizontal crease and his jaw shades off more deeply so it looks more rounded) and I think the 'halo' of blue around the image really makes it pop. I like the shading on the snowman too - the way he's shadowed down the side where Riley is standing. The only thing you might want to think about is the direction of the light source when you're colouring. Here, for example, Riley might be a little too deeply shaded on the left - if he's throwing a shadow onto the snowman then the light source must be coming from left or left-front so he'd more naturally be a little lighter on that side, make sense? I don't always remember to plan for this!
Thanks, everyone for your comments. My New Year's Resolution will be to master the light source issue, lol!
Stormy, thanks for the links. I'll check them out soon.
I went to both Mike's & ACMoore on Saturday and neither of them had koh-i-noor pencils. I looked in the drawing/painting areas as well as the stamping section. Poopie.

If you have a Hobby Lobby in your area, they sell them in the art section where the prisma pencils are.
Hobby Lobby also has 40% off coupons just about every week. The coupons can be printed from their website here.

I originally thought they were to expensive and was not even interested until I took a class where we used the copics. I would recommend you try them before you purchase any since they are more expensive.
There are several on-line stores that have regular sales on them - Carp Diem Dickblick Merriartist TheArtStore
There are several blogs that have copic tutorials. The I like Marker's blogposts are only about copics and are really mini tutorials.
Lisa, I found the Koh-i-noor pencils in the artist section with the Prismacolor pencils at Mike's. Mike's has added a lot to that aisle in the last couple of years. They had 2 diff. packs, mine and another pack that had maybe 10 or 12 in it. I really don't remember cause I saw the 24 pack, grabbed them and continued on with my shoppin'. I got them this spring and Mike's didn't have them before then. They were still there a few weeks ago. I would be happy to get them for you if you can't find them, just PM me. Heres a Mike's printable 50% off coupon for this week too! May God bless, Sandi

Thanks, Stormy. I looked and looked and our store didn't have them. I'm heading to a different area next week, and their Mike's is a bit better than ours. I'll check that out. Thanks for the coupon link!!

Practice, Practice, Practice. Seriously it truly is a work of art. The type of paper you use can make a huge difference. And most of all you have to what suits you best. I started out with blender pen, still like it for the most part, but the aqua painter definitely has it's place. I wish I was "lighter" with my touch. Post some pictures so we can see your progress.
I just found this thread also. Thanks everyone for all the input. What a great site this is. Everyone is so generous with sharing what they've learned. I find that refreshing-and helpful.
I've been following this thread and want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone for all their fabulous advice.
I finally took the plunge today and bought a set of the Koh-i-noor pencils from Michaels and some Odorless Mineral Spirits and
a couple of blender stumps. Watched the video that Stormy referenced (thanks!) and gave it a try.
Here's my first attempt- what do you think? I started with flowers as I think they may be easier than a whole scene LOL.
I'm far from the likes of many of you, but as a couple of you have said - practice, practice, practice! I will do so!
Thanks again for your help It is much appreciated!
And LISA - I love both of your samples, especially the way you highlighted with the blue!
Your colors are so vibrant! I don't normally reach for orange but you've made me want to try. Thanks for linking your card! I love my koh-i-noors. I especially love that I can blend them with baby oil > cheap and no smell!
