Yes. I've used this method with new SU! stamps for 2 years now. I also used it on some older SU! stamps that were still very sticky after removing them from the wood mounts.
The results are not perfect, but it's such a cheap alternative that I've found it worthwhile.
Here is my experience:
Cling vinyl is very sensitive to changes in temperature. It stiffens and contracts when cold. To mitigate that problem, I trim the stamp first, apply it to the vinyl, then trim the vinyl leaving a small margin (about 1/16") around the edges. I warm the stamp in my hands before I attach it to the acrylic block. If it doesn't want to cling, I "huff" the stamp and the block. That little bit of warm moist air has solved the problem every time.
I did have the vinyl leave the stamp and stay on the block one time - but the stamp had been on the block for 2 weeks while I did a very large project, using that stamp repeatedly for several hundred uses. It was also a stamp that had previously been mounted on a wood block. When I pulled the stamp off the block to put it away, the vinyl stayed behind. I just remounted it on a scrap of cling-foam that I had on hand.
Having this low-cost, simple means of converting my SU! stamps has kept me an SU! customer. I wouldn't purchase them at all if I had to absorb the additional expense of changing out the foam to use them with acrylic blocks.
