the only warning is, when sending cards to deployed soldiers- no glitter, because it flakes off and does something whacky with night vision goggles.
if you already glittered up the cards, they can go to wounded soldiers recovering here in the states.
also, i heard deployed soldiers don't need postage stamps... anyone know if thats true?

Just a side note of info....I have been sending cards to a shipper at Operation Write Home for awhile now. Shipping addresses are on their blog. Anyway, if you pick up (they're free) the flat rate mailing boxes at the post office you can stuff them as fill as you like and they do mail for 1 flat fee. I usually fill a medium flat rate box and it always mails for $10.00 plus change. Lots cheaper than mailing a box from home.
Good for you and your friend. I think it's a wonderful way to thank our troops for serving.
God bless you and your family!

wrong. no glitter period.. glitter gets into wounds.
Postage is free for the military. When my son was deployed last year all he did was write free where the stamp would go. I belong to a group call Marine Moms Online. If you go to the site you will find any addresses you will need to send cards. Also if you know anyone who is deployed and send them a care package. I used to send my son stacks of cards for him to share with his buddies. That was a big hit.

I send cards to From Our Hearts because it was founded by the mom of a stamper friend of mine. NO GLITTER (can be seen by night vision goggles if it gets on their uniforms) and NO FEATHERS (some people have allergies). Besides completed cards they accept card fronts, paper, envelopes, pens, embellishments, clear bags/envelopes, rubber stamps, etc., and money to apply toward shipping the cards overseas. I like to send Christmas cards to the troops and have been doing so since 2001. Our local newspaper puts out a call for families in the area to send in current addresses of their loved ones. When this is printed, I copy all of the addresses into my computer, as some of them are very detailed. Then I print them on to labels and adhere to envelopes. Remember, many of these addresses change as the troops move around so I never use last year's addresses. They might not be good and the card is wasted. I enclose a small "BIBLE" if verses and have had many positive responses to them.
I, too, send cards to Operation Write Home. Great organization and they give lots of tips on their site as to what cards are acceptable and which ones are not. You can send Any Hero cards where you have written a message to a soldier. You can download a packing slip to put in with the box of cards you are sending. They even have a video showing how to get the cards ready to send to OWH. You can send donations for help with the shipping. If I have any open spaces when packing the box of cards to send to OWH, I fill it with granola bars or marshmallow treats that are individually wrapped. Sandy sends them on to the troops with her boxes. I have not had any luck with sending cards to recovering vets here in the states. They get sent back to me with "return to sender" stamped on them.
I send boxes of 250-300 cards per box to many different people to share with their units. I always have the holiday cards but am sure to include a variety of other cards too.
blessings.
Operation Write Home ROCKS! They are really great to work with. You should really go to their web site and check them out. They also have a site where the troops and their families can post notes about the boxes of cards they're received (over 500,000 of them!!). BEWARE, you'll need a box of tissues close at hand for some of these letters. And YES troops overseas mail for free they do NOT need postage. Go check out Operation Write Home!

I was just making some Christmas cards for Operation Write Home today! They are a great organization to work with. I've set a personal goal for myself to send them a package every month. It kind of helps out with a couple of other threads I was just reading today..the one where the person is hoarding paper...this has helped cut down on some of my stash (some...I still have a lot) and the other thread about being a slow poke..that is certainly me..but if I stick with some easy to duplicate card layouts and don't try to go nuts with coloring I've gotten much faster at least with these cards. I also have taken stamped images with me to color at the lake or I do them while watching tv. And it's not only the troops who will get something out of your cards....from experience I know how great it makes me feel knowing that I've touched a service person far from home and their family member as well. Do it!
I just sent off my very first package of 14 cards to Operation Write Home. I'm so excited. I packed up some of the cards I have made in the recent past that I didn't give away or mail away. I'm thinking I can use some of those One Sheet Wonders ideas to make a bunch of related cards and bundle them together. Great way to use my stuff (then buy more later!) and for a great cause. I just hope my cards' quality is okay.
ETA: I find it amazing that some of you can send hundreds of cards at a time!
Just amazing!
My husband just returned from a deployment to Iraq in May.. a sister battalion is currently in Afghanistan. If you would like an address of a 1SG of a unit, I would be happy to share that with you, they greatly appreciate cards.
thank you for supporting the troops!
blessings ~ Pam

Adopt-a-Platoon is also another way to get cards to soldiers. I have been doing it for over 5 years. You can adopt a soldier or a platoon as a pen pal or "package pal" (not sure the wording on the package pal). I try to send a card once a week to my soldier. I have had many soldiers that I have written to in the past. Very rewarding. They have a website adoptaplatoon.org. Good luck

Our cards are in great demand because of the quality that we send over - and thanks to your for your contribution and to the hundreds of others who send us thousands every month! We also turn card fronts into cards - a great way to recycle/reuse those swaps that collect in drawers. From Our Hearts
