I look at so many cards that many people post to the Gallery. Many of them are so pretty. I just don't understand why most don't have any sentiment on the front? I can't imagine sending out a card without a purpose. I think it would make the person receiving it wonder why?
Why don't the Gallery posters have a sentiment on the front of their cards?
A lot of times, I'll make a card and leave off the sentiment on the outside. Then when I'm ready to send it, I can put a sentiment that is appropriate (Thank you, Happy Birthday, etc)
I think that many times the cardmaker leaves the front without sentiment so that you can stamp whatever sentiment you need right before you send the card. Makes the card more versatile.

When I do my cards I usaully leave off my sentiments on the front until I'm ready to send them, or sometimes I use the stamp that says --Thinking of you, that fits most situations. Have been enjoying all the cards Iv'e been looking at "southpaw" :-D
I think everyone is right so far in that most people leave off the sentiment until right before it gets sent, especially if they are pre-made cards. I know I have left sentiments off the front sometimes because it doesn't go with the flow with the front of the card.
When I don't put a sentiment on the outside of a card, I'm not being mysterious - the sentiment is on the inside. :-) One of the fun things about making cards is that you can go where your art takes you. Even commercial greeting cards don't always have a sentiment on the outside. It's just a personal preference thing.
I sell a lot of my cards and people are always asking me "do you have any cards that can be used for any occasion". So I tend to keep a lot of cards on hand that don't have any sentiments that people can write their own sentiment inside.

I rarely use any sentiments on the outside of my card. I prefer to save the outside for the stamping/embellishments/ribbons, etc. If I'd put sentiments on the outside, I wouldn't have as much room to stamp. My sentiments are always on the inside - not always stamped, but most often hand written or typed. Just the way I do things!
I use some of my cards as notecards...to send a note to someone for no reason. Stationery stores sell boxes of them with a beautiful photo or famous painting on the front...but no sentiment. They can be used for anything, just like a hand-made card with no sentiment.
If someone sends me a beautiful, hand made card, I don't waste time wondering why they sent it. I open it, read, it, love it, appreciate the thought and the time that went into it. I think that many times, a card with no purpose but to look pretty and make someone happy is every bit as loved as a card that has a specific senitment printed on it. I love them all!!
Many of my cards have no sentiment on the front, and I never stamp on the inside. I write a personal note along with my signature inside the card, so I don't feel the need to have it expressed on the front.
I do have friends though, that think that it's not a birthday card unless it says "Happy Birthday" on the front. To each their own!
I used to always have a sentiment on the outside of the card, so that the card would have a "purpose". But now, I'm finding that I leave the sentiment off. I like to stamp or write something on the inside. It seems that lately I've been sending little notes to people to express support, or exchanging cards with my penpals, so I leave the sentiment off. Funny how you get into a habit without realizing it.
I too send more notes than cards, so I keep mine without sentiment pretty often and I always leave the inside blank. I sell alot of cards as well and prefer to let the buyer handwrite the purpose of the card themselves. And another point, I often do really well getting the card together and if I put on a sentiment, I usually do it last. And many times that is where I make my messes because I don't get out my stampamajig that often and I don't get it straight or something. So, I am minamizing my frustration level!!LOL

most, if not all, of my cards have the sentiments on the front! I like being able to go through my stash for a specific card, rather than having to add something later. Also, I find that if the card has a purpose, it's easier for me to design. Just my way of doing things!

I use many of my cards as notecards. A few of them have been framed and displayed as artwork by the recipients so I'm guessing that they preferred them without a sentiment on the front.
I go both ways....boy I bet that woke everyone up!
If I am specifically making birthday cards (usually for the Church to send out), Happy birthday is stamped on the front, same w/sympathy cards. Thank you cards go both ways sometimes on the front sometimes not.
I make a lot of cards w/o any sentiment on the front, for various reasons:
A. I don't want to junk up the front of the card
B. It wasn't made for a specific purpose
C. It could suit a variety of purposes
D. I adhered the liner paper inside before I stamped or printed a birthday greeting and I don't want to mess up the inside and therefore ruin a perfectly stupendous looking card
E. Your own reason goes here!
The great thing about being creative is that there is no right or wrong way to do things. It's your creativity, your preference and when you really think about that, it's pretty darn wonderful!

This is kind of funny. My friend and I usually stamp sentiments (although most of them are generic and can be for many reasons) on the front. Her DH will always pick up the card and open it up and ask why there isn't something on the INSIDE of the card!!! LOL! Guess it all depends on how you look at it- literally!
When I am making cards for my own personal supply, I don't often have a sentiment on the outside. Partly personality and partly what works with my style - but I would always have something on the inside.
But when my sis used to sell my cards, she said ones with greetings on the outside sold much better, and it was so hard for me to do at first.
But it's funny, when I used to do a lot of computer-generated cards way back when, before I conquered stamping, I almost always had some form of sentiment / wording on the front.
I sell most of my cards and people like sentiments on the front! When I get orders (right now I have an order for 15 get well and 15 thinkin of you) the person always specifies which sentiment they want on the front. I go both ways though but the sentiments on the front always sell first! When I send personal cards they usually have no sentiment - I just write my message on the inside.
