Got a whole bunch of cards counted up last night. The new total is at 1,555. I'll say it again...amazing!
I chose not to include one of the cards because it wasn't appropriate . It's the one with the frog on it that says "we may not be tadpoles anymore but at least we haven't croaked!" The card was beautifully done, but I can't imagine one of the soldiers sending it to their family and then tragically die before it reaches the family. Makes sense, right?
You probably know that the Prairies are in the middle of the deep freeze. School buses in our area didn't run today, but I drive my kids to school so they still went (11 kids in my DS's class; 6 in my DD's class). Found out this afternoon that the buses won't run again tomorrow. When we got home tonight I asked the kids if they wanted to go to school or if they wanted to stay home (I still have to go to work so I'm heading out anyway). My DD asked if she would have to do chores if she stayed home. I said no, she'd be doing school work - watch a movie and write a critical review, do a craft, look on the internet for some math sheets, etc. She thought for a second and said "I'll go to school, I'll have to do less work there than if I stayed home."
That is sooooo funny. I'm the same way. Mishayla has to miss school b/c of doctor visits & hospital stays. When she gets back, the teachers never give her any missed work/homework. This year at her team meeting (all her teachers, nuse, counselor, principal) I told them I wanted her to receive ALL her missed worked (even class work) anytime she was out. They seemed amazed.
We have a new card total. Over the past couple days I received packages from canadian_stamper (Barbara), TNewhook (Tammy) and catt871 (Chris) plus an envelope of cards from someone not on SCS.
With all of these, we stand at 1,679!!
Thanks again everyone!! It warms my heart in the midst of this cold snap to receive the happy mail.
There you go, you had your fifteen minute claim to fame. And what a great cause too. This should bring in a lot more cards for you, don't you think?
Was there a picture to go with it. You should try to copy it and post here
for all of us to see. Way the go.
Norma,
I finally got a chance to see if I could post the article here. No such luck - copyright laws prohibit it from being copied or reproduced. I looked on their website to see if I could do a link to the article, but they don't even have an archives. Oh well - just keep imagining that I'm the most beautiful girl you've ever seen and all will be good. BWHHAAHAH ;)
I've been out of the loop for a couple of days with my niece's wedding, which was beautiful by the way!!
I do have a new card count. Got some from a source other than SCS which puts us at 1,911!! I've still got some more to count, so I'll update again when I get a chance.
Two packages arrived today - one from Tammy (TNewhook) and one from Kim (surflola). Great cards, ladies! With their contributions, we are now at 1,973. I never thought we'd get this many cards in such a short amount of time!
Carolyn, I finished a batch of cards for you that will go out on Tuesday. Will you do me a favor and tell me which one you like the best when you get them? I have a little surprise for you for all the hard work you have put into this.
Thanks!
Hi Kim,
I took a poll (my family) - each one of them picked a different card that they liked best. Go figure! My daughter liked the white rose, my son liked the bird, my hubby pointed to about 5 different ones (he was tired and hungry and just wanted to eat and go to bed, so I don't think his vote counts ;) ) My favorite is the pink rose.
Now you have me curious..what are you planning?
Ladies - you should see the photography that Kim does. It's absolutely stunning. She makes her cards with photos of flowers, or a bee on a flower, or a butterfly on a flower, or a close up of a pumpkin, or a bird in a tree, or ... you get the idea. She doesn't need to stamp!! Her art is in her pictures. I hope you enter competitions, Kim.

Hey, Caroline - we don't have to imagine it, you have to be, to take on such
a massive task as you have. Your postie must be going mad with your mail.
You will have to send him/her a valentine with chocolate roses. LOL I can't
believe how well you have done here and what a wonderful thing it is for
the troops away from home. Wow! Impressive.

Actually alot of them have been hand delivered so that helps. Me doing a swap at the same time has created some havoc too, I guess.
I don't know if I want to give my postie anything - I received a package in the mail from a different thing, and the sender and I both think the parcel was tampered with. hmmm. I'm not saying it was my lady, but we are rather suspicious of what happened.
WE DID IT! We made the 2,000 mark! Thanks to cards that arrived from Rachel (OttawaStamper) today we are at 2,023!! We're so close to the 2,500 mark of the number of military that are being deployed. I never thought we'd get this many cards so quickly. Thanks everyone!
Carolyn,
I don't know if you want to include the cards that I will be sending to Afghanistan with one of our troops. He is leaving on Feb 27th out of Shilo, Manitoba and, since I couldn't get a hold of anyone in the family resources centre there I decided I would send the cards with this young gentleman. Thus far I have over 100 cards but I know I will be getting at least another 150 from two friends (if not more). Let me know if you want to include my number of cards in your total since it's all for the same cause.
Have a great day and thanks for doing this.
Connie
PS: Last night I went into Staples Business Depot and they were kind enough to donate a large box of envelopes for the cards. Keep this in mind when you need to go out and buy paper supplies.

I think to keep things straight in my own head, I'll just count the ones that come through my grimy little mitts. I'm not surprised you couldn't get a hold of anyone at the MFRC - I've tried through the Garrison here and they are hopping busy trying to get ready for the deployment. YEAH for you collecting the cards too! Isn't it a great feeling to be able to do something tangible for our military? Start keeping your own tally and see how your number grows. I have a Staples right in Spruce Grove so I will give that a try. I should probably talk to a manager since they are the ones that make the decisions. It's nice getting the free ones from Hallmark and Carlton too since they would just chuck them.
Carolyn,
Thank you so much for the lovely compliments about the photo cards! You made my day.
I'm sending you a little something
Hope you like it.
Kim
Oh and congrats on your total!
Keep up the good work girls.......
Kim - thank you in advance. The anticipation is going to drive me nuts, though!
And now, a NEW total! Thanks to cards from Isaiah40:31 and Mrs. B our total now sits at 2,055! I'll be taking this batch in tomorrow with the hopes that someone is there to accept them on our behalf.
I took the cards into the Edmonton Garrison yesterday. They were thrilled to have them. The deployment coordinator told me that she would send a portion of them over to the Padre for him to take care of and distribute. She told me we could "slow down" on the number of cards. Isn't that a hoot!?!
No, I think she was serious. I asked her what the absolute deadline was for cards - she said that when one group comes home another group goes, so it never ends. We could keep on collecting forever! I'll see how long I keep going. So far, it's not a burden or a chore, in fact, it's an honor to do this for all of you to support our military.
That's weird. I still don't understand, if the troops are coming and going so much, why would she want you to 'slow down'? I bet the soldiers getting the cards don't want us to.
I'm interested in making cards for the soldiers. My son has come back from Afghanistan, and his wife is due to leave in 2 weeks. Please forward your address so I can start sending you my cards.. Thanks for caring about our Soldiers.

Maybe it's to "pace ourselves" instead of getting a whole bunch all at once, then nothing for months. Just a steady flow would be better, if that makes sense.

Hi, me again...I'm anticipating not being on here much in the next few days. My daughter is in a dessert theatre on the 14th and 15th with a matinee on the 17th. There are dress rehearsals this week too. So, with the running around, and extra jobs I volunteered for to help them out, I won't have much extra time to play on SCS. :(
But, Judy (canstamper) your package arrived on Friday. I haven't even opened it yet with all the craziness! I will update the card total when I get a chance to sort through them. I just wanted to let you know that your parcel arrived - Thank You!
Nervous energy today!! My daughter is in her "zone" for the dessert theatre tonight. She didn't talk much this morning, and I didn't push it. I think we're both feeling a little nervous.
TNewhook's cards arrived yesterday, so now I have two packages to update the card total with. I'm hoping I'll have some time tomorrow to do that.
No pictures. The director arranged for someone to do some photos for Sunday afternoon's performance, so I've asked for a copy of the pics. I'll see if I can post one at that point.

I know, Carolyn, you would rather only include the cards you get sent to you...and that's great! Just wanted to let you know that I will be sending 295 cards with this soldier I spoke of earlier. This works out to 9 cards for each member of his troop and a few extra for him. I'm so excited about getting these cards to him. It's great to see all these wonderful people pulling together for our troops. God bless you all!

Connie - GREAT JOB! And you're right - we're all pulling together to support our troops. It'd be neat if each base in Canada was to receive a box of cards through their Military Family Resource Center. They each have members that serve overseas that need to be remembered. Thanks for jumping on the bandwagon with the cards!
Since I'm here...I have a new card total, thanks to packages that arrived today from cookiehead, lily_louise and 1lizette1 (thanks for the envelopes, too). Thanks to all three of you, the number now sits at 2,423!
I'm going to a scrapbooking weekend (and card making too, actually you can read all weekend if you choose ! LOL) anyway, should I make more cards or do they already have enough?

I'm definitely still collecting! I talked to the deployment coordinator and she said that we can keep them coming - she'll just send a box at a time to the Padre and he'll be responsible for distributing them. Thanks so much - your last batch of cards were awesome. I finally got caught up which felt really good.
Have fun at your weekend. I've never done that and it sounds like fun. I'm hoping to go for about 3 hours tonight but I'll have to see if my hubby makes it home in time to be with my DS - for some reason he doesn't want to come scrapping. Go figure!
Going away for a weekend is awesome ! The place I go to is a cildren's summer/winter camp (obviously no kids there when we go). The director's wife is a scrapper and she was thinking one day that there's 2 weeks in the spring and 2 in the fall when the camp is empty why not host some scrapbooking weekends? I arrive after supper on the Friday and stay til about 2 pm Sunday, they provide all the meals (home cooked in their big camp kitchen), beds to sleep in (ok they're bunk beds but if you get there early you can snag the bottom bunk) and best of all you don't have to get dressed the entire weekend if you don't want to. I often stay in my pj's the whole time. The cost, you're gonna flip, $140 for the whole weekend !
So your ds doesn't want to go scrapping with you? AAAWWW, too bad LOL! I'm happy mine won't come, I wouldn't get anything done (they're 11 and 4).
Back to the weekend .... I just went to google and typed in ... Ontario scrapbooking weekend and went from there.
If you can, try and get away, it's worth it ! Even if it's just an all-day one. We need these things once in a while.
Thank you for collecting cards. They'll be so grateful !
My church is having a "weekend" getaway (Friday evening then come back all day Saturday - no sleeping arrangements) in April. I'm really hoping to go to that one. I might even be doing a card demo there. The lady organizing it is planning on having my friend demo digi-scrapbooking and she's getting a whole bunch of giveaways, etc. We meet once a month for an evening which has been fun too - just even connecting and seeing what everybody's style is (I'm classic - no two ways about it!).
Let me know how much you got done after you get back.
