You might want to check viking.com they had a terrific deal on the big set a while ago. Michael's also carries them and you could use a coupon.

I got mine at Viking but got in on that really great deal a year ago or so. Since then I do know of someone who got a good deal on an unopened set on ebay.

Um, no offense intended, but why not buy the SU watercolor crayons instead? Then you have the colors to match the papers. I know the prismacolors were all the rage on this sight earlier last year, but since SU came out with the wc crayons, I think that is a much better choice.

I waited and bought my set at Michael's using a 50% off coupon. Since they don't offer 50% that often you could use the 40% off they have every other week. It also helped me because I had two gift certificates from Mother's Day so I walked out only paying around $2.00. For the poster that asked about the Watercolor Crayons, I don't have them personally but my DD does. The effects are totally different. The WC looks just like watercolor were as the Prismacolor is darker & richer. It all depends on what look you are going for. WC is on my wish list.

The watercolor crayons are definitely fabulous, but they result in MUCH softer, more muted colors than the Prismacolor pencils blended with Gamsol/mineral spirits. It all depends on the overall look you're going for. I know that if you do a search you'll find a list someone posted with corresponding Prismacolor colors to our 48, but I generally don't bother with that.

Hobby Lobby has their internet coupons for 40% off also.

I started off with buying single pencils in only those colors I needed for my card project and added from there. This way, I am not stuck with colors I will never use.

I've had good luck with SU!'s watercolor pencils and blender pens--not exactly the same effect as Prisma + gamsol, but close enough to make me pleased; these pencils had sat unused for going on 2 years now, I think . . .

Definitely check ebay. Someone said they got the set of 120 for $50 on ebay. (Of course you'll pay shipping too.) I think that set at Michael's is about $130. (It's been a while since I checked.) Figure in the tax, and even with the coupon, I think you could do better on ebay.

i suggest picking up a few of your favorite colours from someplace that sells them open stock first to make sure you like the techinque.

I love mine, but don't use them much since I put them up out of kids reach . . . got them at Viking last year for a good price. I like them better than SU's, but I was quite content with my SU pencils before I got Prismas

I actually got mine on Ebay, got a great deal too. You have to look around and see what price others have for it and then go to Ebay and know what your high bid will be. If you are patient chances are you will get a good deal also. People get caught up in the bidding and sometimes pay way too much :???:

As for other places i have found that Dick Blick has very good prices on most items, go to www.dickblick.com and take a peek

Someone mentioned the SU watercolor crayons and they are right about the subtle colors as compared to the prismacolor and gamsol, personally I have the watercolor crayons, prismacolor, pastels & watercolor pencils w/blender pens. Obsesive no ...why do you ask

Wow. That is a once in a lifetime deal!!!

A quick related question: it sounds like everyone uses this gamsol with the prismacolors. Is it possible to just use the pencils, or do you have to get the gamsol?

I think you get a smoother blending using the gamsol.

You can also get a colorless blender pencil to use with them. It will blend the colors together and soften the colors as well. I like to use it. Usually, I watercolor but sometimes, just want something different. (I too am obsessive about coloring materials.) I also read a post once about someone who took a class that used the pencils themselves as blenders. It was on here but I couldn't tell you how to check. I didn't take a class or anything. But, I have tried just laying on heavy, heavy color and blending the coloring into each other. Pretty cool effect. I don't have gamsol. I tried Turpenoid. It just wasn't for me although I do really love the cards I've seen posted. Maybe I'll try again later.

I bought a couple of prismas from the open stock at Jo Ann's and an odorless mineral spirit (Sansodor) with my coupon, just to see if I liked them. I do like the look, very much more intense than other coloring methods. What I like is that I can layer several colors on each other then blend with the mineral spirits and it's really cool. I liked it so much I waited for the 50% from Mikes and got a bigger set. Here's one of my cards:

Take a look at www.aswexpress.com. They're an art warehouse. The prices are the cheapest I've seen anywhere. They also have the Lyra crayons which are exactly like SU (my suspicions are they are made by the same company) for $36.00. You can find the water soluable solid color pencils there as well.

I definitely see what you mean about intense color. They are vibrant! I definitely need to try this.

Also, someone gave us the inkyantics link, which not only has the stuff to buy, but gives a little explanation of how to use it, which I definitely needed. Thank you!

I looked at Blick, Viking, etc... The best place I've found...that beats anyone's "sale" price is Ebay. Picked up a set of 120 in the tin with the two free color sticks for about $50 and that included shipping and no tax.

The gamsol changes the look. Do you *need* it? Absolutely not. They work fine on their own. The key to getting a good result is to blend well, and it to achieve this effect, you use several shades. That is why matching the Prismacolors to SU's colours is pretty much pointless. Prismacolour also makes a blender pencil, which I like. I've also seen artists use the white pencil for blending, and that technique works well too. They're very versatile, and oh, so much fun.
